Most people get tested for a manual gearbox because it means that you are allowed to drive both a manual and auto, whereas if you get tested in an auto, that’s all you’re legally allowed to drive unless you get re-tested in a manual

Most of the manual cars driven in the UK are for people who have migrated from other European countries. All the Eastern European people I know (mainly Polish) for example drive automatics. That's not a knock at them it's just car companies catering for their needs. Nothing wrong with that. I don't know any British person who has ever even taken a lesson in an automatic car. You have to take your test in a manual car and if you have migrated to the UK you most likely drive an automatic or if for some reason after you have taken your test they then decide to drive an automatic which I've never seen. In Britain we drive manual as God intended

I don't personally know anyone who lacks the skill to operate a manual transmission. The reason automatic transmissions haven't become widely adopted in Europe is because they tend to result in larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles, which is not well-suited for Europe's narrow roads and costly fuel.

Boomer is thinking about an American movie called Beerfest. Where a group of Americans go to Germany to take part in an international beer drinking contest. But the beer drinking contest consists of playing American beer drinking games. Like you can’t take a drink until your opponent throws a ping pong ball into a red plastic cup. Then at the end they have a glass in the shape of a boot. They have to drink beer from, and they call it Das Boot. But yeah that’s a reference to German war film and the same film Peep Show is referencing.

Another great reaction. On the manual/automatic thing; it used to be a real mark of dishonor if you drove an automatic, and I never met anyone who did the test for automatic only. However, in recent years there have been more automatics due to their better re-sale value. Most new cars are now automatic, so things are changing

UK still has 70% of cars on the road being manual. Automatic is getting more popular as the license for it is cheaper however you are then limiting your options as you can only drive automatics on that license where as a manual license lets you drive any car. I feel like automatics are even less common on mainland Europe so people with automatic only licenses may struggle to find a car they can drive if they rent one whilst overseas.

IN UK you don't have to learn with a manual car, but if you learn on an automatic, you are only allowed to drive an automatic. Most cars and vans were manual until quite recently, but auto is taking over fast, with all the upmarket versions and electrics. I prefer manual. More control, fun, faster, better economy on fuel, more reliable. Better for ice and snow. Less likely to fall asleep at wheel.

I’ve never driven an automatic transmission vehicle in 28 years of driving, including a brief stint as a truck driver. Automatics could be rising in popularity, but it doesn’t seem very common to me. I’m from Manchester, UK.
