Reminds of of the sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service. It got broadcast worldwide then deaf people started complaining that they didn’t know what she was saying. This is one of my favorite episodes. As a coder, when you encounter a problem that you cannot debug, understand, or resolve, it nags at you like a sore tooth. You cannot let it go until you figure it out. So the scenes of him slowly losing his mind trying to figure it out (plus the Close Encounters of the Third Kind references) resonate with me. Linda's virtual triathlon was a joke then, but I'm doing exactly that right now. They're called the Conqueror Challenges. They use your fitness tracker to track your progress and google maps / street view to show you where you currently are in your challenge. You get a real, beautiful, metal medal at the end, and whilst it's not for charity, they plant trees and stop bottles from entering the ocean as you hit milestones. It's getting me out and touching grass anyway. I did my 10k steps today. 😅
@AndrewJonesMcGuire8 ай бұрын
But the questions that have to be asked are - why aren't they planting trees anyway? As for the steps, after 6K it's diminishing returns in terms of how it affects your health, and in fact is more likely to cause joint problems later in life.

For whether it would be better to drown or to burn in a fire. Both are basically death by suffocation. With drowning your lungs fill with water and it's impossible to get any air in, with fire there's so much smoke as well as the fire consuming the oxygen in the air so people generally die from lack of oxygen well before they can burn to death. So the question is would you rather suffocate whilst in water or whilst being burnt as well as suffocating? I'm pretty sure put like that most people would rather the water.

He isn't that close to the fire, it is forced perspective. There is space between Roy and the desk. Incredibly common trick, there just is not enough distance for our eyes to pick up that they aren't near each other, the rest is taken care of our brains: people sit near desks, and here we have the fire that is blocking a lot of the view. The fire also is most likely just a line at the edge of the desk.
