These do a good job at trying not to piss people off.. He was referring to the war of 1812 where the US declared war on the UK and invaded Canada and got repelled and ended up getting sieged with most battles lost, all war objectives lost hence signing a peace treaty. The US did win a battle at the end of the war meaning they did not lose any territory which gave the Yanks a reason to call for some victory even though they were the ones that declared war and got there arses handed to them ..

The US declared war on the British empire, more specifically, to declare war upon the UK would mean they were attempting to invade the British isles

@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 Yes, though they did start making preparations in the 1920s in order to invade the UK, but gave up on the idea in the 1930s. Hitler was going to align himself with us to repel the American forces, in exchange for our aid in his military invasion of Poland and other countries in Europe, but with the sudden decision by the US to give up on its UK invasion, Hitler used the still steady uncertainty to begin his invasion plans without us... though there was no chance of us collaborating with him anyway!

He has a degree in Modern History from Oxford and is a self confessed History fanatic so he genuinely does know his shit. The fact he is then also clever enough to twist anything into a patriotic British win is just genius. What is the best thing about his act is the people that don't get it is an ironic act..they say he is being "racist" when actually he us taking the piss out of people who are actually like that in real life
@mickieg19944 ай бұрын
Some Derek and Clive is perfect for that, they do this caricature of the 70's racist in some of their work, it's hilarious but we're so far removed from it now that the satire is harder to spot and so alot of people nowadays think they were genuine.

Yes, Al's main on-stage character is the Pub Landlord, for which he's won comedy awards in the UK. Well worth checking out. The character is one you don't see so much of in real life anymore, but is a traditional "know it all" bar owner, with ultra patriotic views and an opinion about everything. He does drink a lot of beer during the performance, but it's alcohol-free stage beer. He also interacts fully with the audience, especially the front few rows, asking them questions about their lives, ridiculing their non-traditional jobs, flirting with the women (whose jobs he categorises as "teacher", "secretary", or "nurse" regardless of what they said), and generally tearing the place up. A few clips on YT show him picking on Americans in the crowd, so you might enjoy those.

He does do history documentaries. One to watch is The Road to Berlin; a 10 part series, where he drives an American WW2 jeep and follows the UK/American advance from D Day to the fall of Berlin.

I think you have to remember that his persona on stage is very much a character that Al is playing. He actually has an incredibly privileged background. He went to boarding school from a young age. His father a lieutenant colonel, grandfather a ‘Sir’ from Scottish aristocracy. As others have mentioned studied at Oxford.

Yankees is actually referring to the early Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam... They were often called Jan or Kees...or the combination Jan-Kees... Somehow Yankees is the final version after a few hundred years... (Its the same for Boss (baas) and cookie (koekje)... Dutch leftovers.

Love Al Murray! As I'm a Brit, I've been lucky enough to have seen him live several times. Comedy genius and he has a degree in Modern History from Oxford. But he does have one or two small errors in this skit. UGANDA - Nope. He is doubtless thinking of Tanganyika which was German East Africa. Which we did indeed snaffle and add to the Empire at the end of WW One. Uganda had already been added to the Empire a number of years previously (in the late 1880's ) as the Protectorate of Uganda. WHITE HOUSE - No, that's an urban myth. It was indeed burned after the British victory at Bladensburg, but it was already known as the White House prior to the War of 1812. Its somewhat porous stone construction had been whitewashed to protect against freeze/thaw erosion for nearly 20yrs prior to the burning. BURKINA FASO - Nope. A French colony since the late 1880's. Since Al replied "used to be a German colony" I rather think he is confusing it with Togo which we grabbed after WW One (well technically Togo was split in two, we got half, the French got half).

He was at a comedy festival I think the Edinburgh one and the actual compare who introduces all the acts didn't show so he quickly created this character and stood in, the other acts loved it so much they even chipped in with some suggestions and so the Pub Land Lord was born....the rest is history.

Yanks or Yankey might of came from the Dutch name Jan( John). First heard in the American civil war. Amracans call the English/British, Limey's. Because the British navy give its sailors lime or lemon juice to stop scurvy. But the Amracans didn't know about or believe in its treatment.. Bit of history. Yer. @daweshorizonАй бұрын
FFS, you guys really need to brush up on your history. And learn to understand the concept of irony. I feel the need to explain further, but I can't be arsed. OK, I will try. Al Murray is very brainy graduate in History from Oxford University. That's why he knows his stuff. Al, (actually using his real name) plays the character of a stereotypical landlord of a British Public House, opinionated yet helpful. He may have old-fashioned, but nevertheless 'traditional' values and beliefs. And he sells you beer. Possibly crisps as well; or 'potato chips', if you must. The Public House, or simply 'Pub', is a cultural facet of life in the UK and Ireland. People go to the pub for a beer after a day at work, or maybe to meet friends later in the evening. The nearest pub you can walk to, may be referred to as the 'local', where you will meet many familiar faces, pass the time of day and talk bollocks about football, horse-racing and the weather. The British Pub is iconic. Friendships and relationships are formed. Both good and (less frequently) bad. So basically, Al Murray is mainly poking fun at British arrogance and weird ideas of National pride. Any offence taken by Americans, French or Germans is just collateral damage. It's comedy! In Britain it's called 'taking the piss'. I hope this makes things clearer for what Al Murray would call you, 'dozy yanks'. Love and peace.

Al's knowledge is great (he has a History degree but was never a History teacher), the delivery is very impressive but not all of the information he gives is factually correct (i.e. there was no Pope Julius XII, only three Popes were named Julius and the dates of the treaty that partitioned New World discoveries between Spain and Portugal were incorrect). I am not being overly critical but one can't fully compliment someone for something they do that is not totally correct (I think I am qualified to comment, as I was a secondary school History teacher for 33 years, covering in my studies and teaching , Ancient History, Medieval History, Modern European History, Australian History, Pacific History and American History).
