There's a (joke) saying in the UK, that the only people who know how to run the country are either driving taxis, cutting hair or pulling pints - as they tend to tell you what's wrong with everything regardless of if you want to hear their opinion! - The Pub Landlord character perfectly taps into this stereotype . One of Al's big skills is interacting with the audience & improvising jokes as he does this

The English and the French have been bitter rivals for hundreds of years. That is why he calls them neighbours from hell. He missed a lot including all of Africa and Lebanon. You won't be familiar with Paddington Bear who came from Peru and arrived in Paddington station in London. You will be totally unfamiliar with that bear whereas British kids will all recognize him. I imagine you may have missed half the jokes but it makes little difference. He is such a good comedian even half his material is often enough. I love watching your reactions. You both give off good vibes. By the way, the subtitles are a distraction. They get most of his words completely wrong. More Al please.

It's what might be described as ironic, that the hatred, power rivalry between the two countries or, let's say the immature, playground mentality that has persisted for years of trying out do one another, instead of make the most together in this world we share, had much to do with the problems of today in the Middle East.

A documentary called 7 sisters explains how the straight lines in the middle East were formed , when oil was discovered in 1914 , the British and french colonial powers along with local tribal leaders . The 7 ' sisters ' were newly formed oil companies who influenced the above mentioned and created the new borders knowing that it would cause problems for generations to come . Santa Clause came from a part of Asia Minor which is now modern day Turkey in the 4th century. He was a Saint called Nickolas who used to deliver gifts to the poor and children, this is how the legend started. Although he could have been referring to the turkey which is traditionally eaten at Christmas in the UK. I am in the UK and am 80 yrs. I remember going on holiday with my parents when it was a tolerant country. The people were friendly and there were beautiful mountains an beaches but very hot. I pray that one day Lebanon can become beautiful again. God Bless.

He's being self-deprecating . . on a national level . . about the country he lives in and loves . . he's recognising and acknowledging the horrible errors of empire . . he's making Britain laugh at itself, and accept the horrors our ancestors are guilty of. We're sorry, we really are all sorry . . we weren't even alive then, but we're sorry. And we wish you well. But do prey he never chooses to closely examine and make comedy of your own heritage.

You seemed to get upset at the middle east jokes(which is valid), his joke was aimed at the british not the people of the middle east, he is being sarcastic when he said we stepped in to help and made an effort. Us brits are fully aware that the british empire messed up big portions of the world, when ever a topic like this comes up people like to remind us what an empire we had no control over, did. Well done for enjoying the Middle East section too. It's naturally difficult to place pride and concern to the side to enjoy a joke about yourself. This is very important to British people - you must laugh at yourself (also true of Ireland, Australia and other similar countries). That's why we enjoyed the joke about Devon and Plymouth having very slow evolution and being primitive, Scotland being 'famous' for losing battle and sport, Wales' accent sounding like anger, Ireland being only basic workers for the British. Truth is important but so is humility and confidence in your identity that nobody can make you upset. You can't morally laugh at others if you can't laugh at yourself too, that's not 'fair' and that's key to British 'pride'.

At 23:32, Al is referring to Paddington Bear:- Paddington Bear is a fictional character in children's literature. He first appeared on 13 October 1958 in the children's book A Bear Called Paddington and has been featured in more than twenty books written by British author Michael Bond, and illustrated by Peggy Fortnum, David McKee, and other artists. The friendly spectacled bear from "darkest Peru" - with his old hat, battered suitcase, duffel coat and love of marmalade sandwiches - has become a classic character in children's literature. An anthropomorphised bear, Paddington is always polite - addressing people as "Mr", "Mrs" and "Miss" but rarely by first names - and kindhearted, though he inflicts hard stares on those who incur his disapproval. He has an endless capacity for innocently getting into trouble, but he is known to "try so hard to get things right". He was discovered in London Paddington station by the (human) Brown family who adopted him and named him "Paddington Brown," as his original name in bear language was too hard for them to pronounce. Paddington has become one of the most beloved British fictional characters-a Paddington Bear stuffed toy was chosen by British tunnellers as the first item to pass through to their French counterparts when the two sides of the Channel Tunnel were linked in 1994. Paddington books have been translated into 30 languages across 70 titles and have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. As of June 2016, the Paddington Bear franchise was owned by Vivendi's StudioCanal. Bond, however, continued to own the publishing rights to his series, which was licensed to HarperCollins in April 2017. 🇬🇧🐻👍🏼

You're right about the borders, but it centred around oil. They did the same with India & Pakistan ending up with 2 separate pieces of land for Pakistan hundreds of miles apart, one of which became Bangladesh. All very odd & still causing trouble today.

It's called Scottish. And that's exactly how they talk. He's also a very educated man who studied history and plays a character who's pro-English. Doesn't make him racist. Also Paddington Bear is from Peru. It's just jokes!

Yeah, I can understand you pausing to talk about Israel. People in the UK have mixed feelings about it. We needed to put the Jews somewhere at the end of the war, and the only option we seemed to have was to put them where they think they are at home. At the time Palestine was controlled by the UK, and it seemed like a good idea... maybe it wasnt. It has caused problems that will go on and on. And as generations go on, we dont feel great about it, but people there should try to get along somehow.

Regarding the Middle East plenty of Brits know it’s history and how the borders were drawn up by Sykes and Picot in WW1 cutting across ethnic and religious lines

Actually the area was given to France and British with a mandate to set up governments by the League of Nations an early attempt at a UN. As the Ottoman Empire was defeated during WW1. The Arab peoples were disparate and intermingled bewildering the French and British, who decided to draw straight lines which was just impossible, leaving what we have today!

Yes the British & French essentially created Iraq, and moved out of Palestine when the Jews started creating a lot of trouble and enabled Israel to be created. Similarly in Africa Britain, France, Belgium & Germany drew borders and created many countries and thereby split tribes of peoples between countries in unnatural formulations. When you look around the world similar things have happened, which is what us humans do for personal advantage. Human traits. 😁
