She agreed, and that's where The Pub Landlord was first seen by the public!

I think British stage comedians have a long history of interaction with the audience - perhaps not as a basis for the whole act though. Dealing with drunken or stupid hecklers is a key skill for standup comedians, especially in rougher venues. A theatre in Glasgow was famous for how badly the acts were treated by the audience (especially acts from England). English comedians coming off the stage to no applause were told that they had actually done quite well: 'if they like you here, they let you live!' They were also paid extra for working there! Another famous incident involved a young singer who was so frightened whilst on stage there that he feigned fainting so as to be dragged off.
@swanvictor88710 ай бұрын
Ahhh the Old Glasgow Empire!! And the singer was Des O'Connor lol. Eric Morecombe once said Des should have rented out his shoes for adverts on the bottom of them, as that was what the audience saw most of the time! lol

Al Murray is brilliant, he plays being drunk, i met him after a show where he was selling his autobiography, he was very friendly, signed the book and had photos taken with us ( no slurred speech ) British comedians do interact with audiences at live shows, so much so some people are scared to sit on the front row

Not judging, but it is interesting you say a lot of British humour can be childish which is exactly what we think of a lot of American humor which must say something about us all. A lot of Y'tubers seem to enjoy British comedy which can be very different and involves far more sofisticated play with the English language a lot of the time. I appreciate that our use of English is far more "colourful" and inventive perhaps in our daily lives which explains some of it. I also think this points to some societal and moral freedoms that we enjoy that our US cousins don't albeit by mutual concensus on your part.

Hello Joel and pal. I will leave Al to other comments, as there will no doubt be many. As commented before, elsewhere, the star of British comedy, is not the hero making fun of the clown, as in much US comedy, but rather the clown. The guy who makes a complete fool of himself, but manages to see the funny side of life as all collapses and yet gets on with it regardless at the end. The ordinary person, who will never be a "success" but never gives in. The Charlie Chaplin or Stan Laurel. It is similar to how taking the Mickey out of those who would wish to stand out is a way of reminding them they are no better than anyone else in a system that has a king and lords and ladies and is done to show you are "one of us" not to exclude and that showing you are "one of us" infers you are just as good as everyone else, whatever anyone says.

“Drunk”??? NO entertainer would risk his career by appearing drunk on stage. IT’S… AN… ACT! You said it yourself at 15:15 “…he plays the pub landlord character well”. A drunk performer risks making mistakes, forgetting the script/dialogue, saying the wrong thing. As I said, and consider this for the future, NO PERFORMER - be it actor, comedian, singer, dancer, anything - would EVER intentionally appear actually drunk on stage. Another example is old-time crooner Dean Martin. He always put on the act of having a glass of hard liquor in his hand while on stage performing and even made out his speech was slurred etc. It was all part of the act. The act wouldn’t survive if he was really drunk!

Al Murray comes from an upper class privileged background,very posh school and university. The working class pub landlord is a brilliant device to lampoon bigotry through the eyes of a so called Everyman. He is also a serious historian with many thoughtful you tube videos, especially about the 2 nd World War. His routines about race and national identity,( trying to explode their myths with irony) are the opposite of his ( I'm guessing) soft left,centre left,real opinions, which I'm sure come from decades of reading history books.
