Austrian German and German German have plenty of different words (in the respective high language, mind you, without even diving into the multitudes of local dialects) and even a few differences in grammar. While the majority would call it a dialect, there are enough people who consider it a seperate language. So less difference than say Ukranian and Russian, but far more than British and American English for example.

I have to say - not to be demeening, but - the Austrian military spending can NOT be compared to our eastern neighbours. Austrias wages and everything else are just so much higher! Most of our neighbours do not have the euro or at least not as long as we do and ao much more. The behind the scenes is basically (sorry, just as an example):"live in Hungary and work in Austria and you will be VERY well off even after taxes and driving 3 hours!"
