And about Salvador: he had a heart condition and was waiting for a transplant. This is why he seems so tiny but bulky at the same time, under the jacket he had a machine helping him to functionate. He didn't even do the rehearsals because the doctors were worried about his health (her sister did them, and he also let her sing a bit in the winning performance after he got the trophy). I don't remember, but maybe she also cowrote the song; if that is the case maybe "my heart could love for the both of us" also has another meaning.
@catiaazevedo62053 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is true, but only after the victory in Kiev, Luísa Sobral, in an interview in Lisbon, revealed that it was a heart problem and that Salvador was waiting for a transplant. Until that moment, there was only talk about 2 hernia surgeries (which happened) and the cardiac part was suspected. Amar pelo Dois was composed only by Luísa Sobral, Salvador's sister.

Ana Paulo also refers that Salvador Sobral is "recovering well" from the operation to two HERNIAS, one in the navel and the other inguinal, which he underwent days before the national final of the Festival da Canção. Salvador Sobral, however, did not want to give further details about his clinical situation. “It's okay, I'll handle things. About Italy's song: the insipiration behind the song is actually a work titled "the naked ape" by sociologist, zoologist, ethologist Desmond Morris (see the lyrics "la scimmia nuda balla"). This is kind of a critique song about how human beings live in society nowadays (the naked ape is the human being btw) and about how the lifestyle of westerners is often superficial, mainly based on materialism and appearance. The lyrics refer to the internet as the opiate of the poor (in reference to Marx), 'selfie addiction', internet know-it-alls, and a society based on conformity and uniformity. As a result, our evolution seems to 'stumble' instead of moving forward. Another critique is that westeners often believe they can take elements of the eastern culture and "westernise" them (for example the trend doing yoga and meditation without really knowing their history and cultural significance). The song is also filled with other references to literature ("essere o dover essere" is a reference to Hamlet's "to be or not to be"), philosophy (panta rei) and pop culture in general (singing in the rain). Then, the use of the saxon genitive in the song title highlights the tendency to anglicise everything. It is actualky a deep and brilliant song, but it kind of failed to deliver its message to the greater audience: a lot of people just saw a creepy gorilla dancing wonderinf wtf was going on! 😅😂

I enjoyed 2017 and was surprised by Portugal winning, too. I really like the song and was happy when it was included in Will Ferrell’s Eurovision movie. 2021 I think is the best Eurovision thus far, but at the time 2017 was the second time I was watching the show live so I was as impressed with it just like 2016’s. Bulgaria’s song remains a favorite from 2017. And I agree that the yodeling song was catchy. I listened to it a lot at the time because I liked how it blended yodeling with some modern styles of music. Living in a state where cowboys, yodeling in country music, etc is incredibly popular it was nice to hear something blending styles. Plus the performance was fun. I also enjoyed Belarus’s song. One friend that I’d pick up from work referred to it as the fairy tale song anytime it came on my car stereo via my iPod. Although the boat with fans on the back reminded me of boats used in swamps/bayous in Louisiana and Florida that I’ve seen when visiting family that lives in those states. It never occurred to me that it could be a sky boat and that the fog might represent clouds until you said it. LOL

I'm just going to break from some of the comments here and say that 2017 was a good year overall, and the winner was well-deserved. Belgium was my winner, and one of my favorite Eurovision entries of all time, but 4th was enough for me. As a fan I'm still surprised and annoyed that people didn't think the winner was deserved just because he gave an opinion. There's no need to be butthurt after 5 years, and even after he apologized for it. In fact, I have the unpopular opinion that Salvador Sobral and his song helped in the rise of quality of the contest in the past 5 years that lead to this year's contest being so strong! If fans want the contest to be respectable to non-fans, to go become more acceptable for mainstream viewers, we need more people like him. /rant over Great reaction video as always!

I also don't think 2017 was that bad (though I agree subsequent years are better in general). I think the issue is more that there are 7-8 great songs (although some were let down by the live performances) and then all the rest is just really mediocre or forgettable. In other years, you have those 7-8 great songs, but at least another 10-15 songs are still fairly good-ish.

I mean their names are just Vlad, Tim and Olek (or Alex in westernised version of that name). If I remember it correctly - was it the first and only time we actually had fully male group of presenters? 11:45 It's actually song about animals, even if it does sound mostly like a love song or something. She did uno reverse on that one. Also it's great example of why Poland won't be winning the main ESC any time soon. She was given literally no help or budget from TVP. Her friend made the light show and her mom made dresses she wore. 13:35 "History of my life" is basically the chorus. 26:30 Occidentalis Karma is still my favourite song from that year. It was bet as the winner for a reason. Even if Sobral's performance was much more outstanding and there were probably better written songs lyrics-wise, dude's voice is probably the nicest in this year and song itself is the most fun (fits the competition the most). 28:50 Also he is the biggest a-hole from all the modern winners. Kinda makes me wish that it was one of those years where gimmick won over actually strongest song and performance. 31:00 One of the major reasons why he won was because some people really overdid with the effects in last few years. As Eurovision fandom fluctuates with its tastes - this really fit perfectly into the timeline. Still sucks that he has been rude since the day he got that prize. 39:45 I still don't get how the girl who actually won Spanish preselections didn't got sent. And I think most people did. 45:05 Fun fact - its actually "magic mirror on the wall" not "mirror mirror". 1:01:15 Ahh, France - how bad staging can really destroy all the chances you had. I think I will skip, cause I remember getting actually nauseated thanks to the camera work and visuals on the screen. 1:04:55 Oh you just reminded me how much more disgusted I felt after Jury once again pushed Sweden for no other apparent reason than them being Swedish 1:06:15 Ahh, yes - the good reminder that Jury hates Polish songs, with televotes appreciating those more often. Sad fact - we would never qualify to the finale if only Jury was choosing. Like actually never. 1:09:06 It important to mention that he only got the most points thanks to the new scoring system. Percentage-wise he is way lower on the rankings (either if you consider points a single country can get or give out or just percentage of all points given in that competition).

@@vavah2071 Of my course were my personal taste.. That countries are: Iceland, Albania, Switzerland, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Finland, Serbia. F.Y.R. Macedonia (was my #16) & Czech Republic (my #17).. So, for me, that year was so painful to watch. 😅 (Sorry for my bad english XD)

The Portuguese song is influenced by Brazilian Bossa Nova and it's just beautiful, especially to those of us who understand the genre and the lyrics. This type of music might not be commercial in Europe but it's very popular in both Portugal and Brazil. I loved it because I felt like it was different from everything else and I also loved how intimate the performance was. My second favourite was Italy.

Their reaction about Belgium is shocking. Everytime when I watch a video of Americans reacting to Eurovision it makes me happy USA isn’t participating, they will never understand Eurovision
@AmaanStorm3 жыл бұрын
I remember feeling that the French, Swedish & Belgian songs were so overhyped that year, and my opinion hasn't changed listening back to them now. I feel the studio versions were much better, but I still don't vibe with them. It was such a weak year over all with some really weird voting patterns. My favourite by far, and from the beginning, was Portugal that year so I was so happy that they won. I remember it getting so much hate initially, so I loved how he stormed to victory that year.
@clorox16763 жыл бұрын
I personally really liked France's entry, not saying it should have won or anything, but I really liked it. Sweden was ok, it was fun, well performed yet again, not a winner. Belgium was a cool song that needed more work. Its 3 minutes feel like 6 minutes because of the monotone and repetitiveness, which is not necessarily a bad thing but it doesn't work in this case, the build up comes too late and feels very little.

I really hope they react to the semifinals of 2018 because 2018 had SO much going on in their semis, and they've watched so many shows, I think that they're ready to watch 2 semi finals before watching a grand final. And same with 2019. In other years, the semis were not that strong, but in 2018 and 2019 they really were. Or at least the semi final 1 of 2018 and 2019, and it would be amazing to see which they wanted to qualify and then their reaction to the qualifiers.

The winner not only holds the record with 758 points, but is by far the favorite of musicians, singers, known or not, and orchestras, who release covers almost every week since 2017, in numerous languages (although many dare to sing in Portuguese) and different instruments. Even Korean singer's.
