Funny thing about vowels in Irish is that we actually have more vowels than English. We both have A E I O and U, but in Irish we also have á é í ó and ú, which gives a very different sound.

Yes, Temple bar is a tourist trap but you have to walk through the district just to get a feel for it. I would recommend you go to Gallagher‘s Boxty house. You have to see capital city and then get out and about around the rest of the country which is spectacularly gorgeous. The National Gallery is a great collection of art in general and Irish art The national Museum of Ireland has the archaeology of the country. It’s spectacular. If you can try and take a show in Dublin, incredible theater or GAA hurling or Gaelic football

St Patrick was kidnapped by Irish pirates and brought to Ireland from (some say) Wales. His real name was Maewyn Succat. Patrick comes from the Roman word "Patricius" - which was used for men of a certain standing (authority figures).

Being that I'm a Patrick, I do know that the young saint was born somewhere in the post-empire Christian Roman Britannia province, which was cut adrift from the empire in 410 AD when the legions were withdrawn. He was the son of a respected official, hence the Latin name Patricius, meaning high class and in charge. Patricians were a legally defined old-money social class in Roman society, people who were aristocratic or politically important enough to be allowed to run for election to the Senate of Rome. He was kidnapped by Irish raiders (called _Scotti_ at the time, meaning pirates, who gave Scotland its name) and taken back to Ireland as a slave, where he worked for several years as a herdsman, occupying his mind with prayer while watching his owner's sheep or cattle. Eventually he was given his freedom, and made his way to Gaul (modern France) to study to become a priest. After being ordained, he travelled to Rome to seek authorisation to lead a missionary effort in Ireland, which he had grown to love. The rest is history, except that the historical record is very sparse compared with the legends. People speculate that as the Angles and Saxons were already conquering and settling in the east coast of Britannia province, that Patrick would have come from Wales, or Cornwall, or Cumbria or Cumberland or Strathclyde, the areas on the western side of the island which were still under Romano-British control. Cumbria and Cumberland are based on the same word for Wales in Welsh - Cymru, and originally spoke the same kind of language, as did Cornwall and Brittany in France. Talking about Hurling, I believe there's also a traditional outdoor slapping-a-ball-against-a-wall type game in Ireland, which differs from other slapping-a-ball-against-a-wall games elsewhere in Europe, although I forget how.

If you want to see what Ireland is really like then forget about the Kerry, Dublin and Galway tourist traps. Go to Leitrim, Cavan, Limerick, Offaly, Fermanagh, Laois, Monaghan, Westmeath. Ireland is not much wetter than London, where I lived for 35 years. You may read that it rains for half the days of the year, but days when there's a 2 minute shower are also counted as rainy days. And, it often just rains during the night and the next daylight time is sunny, that's counted as a rainy day too.

It's not a touchy subject (St Patrick) in Ireland. We are taught in primary school from age 4 that he was Welsh and brought over by pirates to be a slave in Ireland. We never claimed he was Irish, just that he was the patron saint of Ireland who, after escaping Ireland, was called back there by God to bring Christianity to the people there.

To continue my comment. Too many of their persecutors either made their peace with the Roman Catholic Church, or with the British establishment, so Cromwell was an easy person to take the blame. But I have a lot of sympathy with the Irish in the nineteenth century. An unpleasant and self- righteous British Government let the Irish starve. it was persecution of the poor.

The greenness cannot be exaggerated; those I was with were used to green England, but we agreed that there were more greens in Ireland than we ever new existed. Wrong badger, by the way. You showed the American Badger, not the European Badger. I don't have so much sympathy with the Irish in the sixteenth century. They kept allying with autocratic European rulers like Spain and France; and they are wrong to blame Cromwell for their sufferings. Too many of those
