@@asherandai1000 No, we're just more sensible today. As a child at this time, some of these were genuinely disturbing for me and there's really no surprise why that would be the case. I grew up on cartoons, and here's a cartoon character literally grating themselves away while screaming manically. I'm not trying to morally judge anyone who remembers these ads fondly. I've had a laugh seeing them again myself. But there's good reasons why we don't specifically show this stuff to kids anymore.
@asherandai1000
@asherandai1000 4 ай бұрын
@@benjones3466 if you grew up on cartoons at the same time these ads were on, then the cartoons you grew up on had characters blowing themselves up and leaving behind just their eyeballs, being flattened into pancakes on a regular basis, being sliced into multiple pieces and putting themselves back together, and much much more. And that’s just Tom & Jerry. Didn’t even get into Road Runner, Bugs Bunny, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and so much more. And we still show those cartoons to kids. So no, there isn’t a good reason why we don’t show that stuff to kids anymore, because we never stopped.

In 1986 Adrian Edmondson released a book called “How to be a complete bastard” I made the mistake of reading it on the train to work in the morning. Imagine trying to stop yourself laughing in a packed train of besuited business commuters when the next page was more hilarious than the last. I ended up just laughing uncontrollably with tears rolling down my cheeks for the whole 35 minute journey. Days later I heard others doing the same who told me they just had to read the book because what it did to me! The crazy intense adverts you've seen for various products are mostly from the mid to late 90's which was peak UK television in terms of boundary-pushing. The later the show (or advert or whatever) was aired, the more extreme it could be, with very little boundaries at all for Channel 4. Some truly amazing things were broadcast on the TV in that era. All that being said, you've got to admire whoever came up with the double-meaning catchphrase "it's a bit of an animal". It's good stuff.

I haven't seen some of the more extreme adverts in that series. Adverts would be rated under the same rules as normal TV shows so some may have only been shown after the 'watershed' (9pm) when most kids were in bed. Another possibility is that some were shown on pay channels or online in the days when fewer people had access or access was restricted.

Those two were ultimate geniuses in 'Slapstick' comedy... 👌 😎🇬🇧

If you haven't done so already, you should check out the "Nescafe Gold Blend Couple", a campaign that ran from 1987 to 1993. It starred Anthony Head (Giles from Buffy) and Sharon Maughan (MacGyver, Murder She Wrote) as neighbours who develop a relationship. The cliffhanger style and shortness of each advert - 12 adverts at 45 seconds each - kept millions of Brits waiting for the next instalment, to the point that even BBC News said "the next one will air at 9:15pm tonight on ITV/Channel 4"! Starting in 1990 the adverts were remade for the US using the same actors, where Gold Blend was called Taster's Choice.

@@christiner302 I don't think it worked as well as it did here. The USA are huge coffee drinkers anyway, much more so than us, and in the 90s they already had a huge choice of coffee brands and TV channels. A soap-opera-style series of coffee adverts probably wasn't as interesting to them as it was to us.
