Maggie Thatcher is a divisive character in British society. Her political policies changed Britain during the 80's. Her policies had a detrimental effect on many working class people and caused a lot of civil unrest at the time, riots etc. She also took a hard line against football hooligans during that period, which was way out of control during that period. The 80's / early 90s was a tough time for Britain and the British people.

Maggie Thatcher is hated in the north, especially in Liverpool, a city she wanted to put in a "managed decline" instead of helping economically while she was Prime Minister. Her policies killed large portions of labor heavy industries (like mining), which then fucked over loads of people's income in the north. She also 100% stood by a police force that negligently let 97 Liverpool FC supporters die in a stadium crush and afterwards faked reports and witness testimonies to save their own asses and put the blame on the supporters. The week Maggie Thatcher died the 1939 song "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" went straight to #2 on the UK singles chart.

The idea behind Margaret Thatcher is that she came to power during a very hard time for many people. with the work Unions holding strikes across the nation, every time one happened it affected the nations economy, to put a stop to this she brought down the hammer real hard in an attempt to break the Unions. Under her leadership many people from the worker class suffered and many adults today saw their parents suffer due to her, hatred was common for her as was admiration for what she accomplished. When the recessions hit in 2007-2009 it was found that it hit the UK hard due to Margaret Thatcher actions that moved the UK from a Manufacturing based economy to a Service based one, this led to even more hatred for her as this also highlighted the problem with recent political parties in the UK for the last 40 year. They only care about what they can do in their time in control and not what they can set in motion for others to complete and finish to better the nation

Margaret Thatcher was one of the most loathed Prime Ministers we've ever had (though several of the recent ones are coming close). She wiped out entire industries and the Nortth of England - where Liverpool is located - came under particularly heavy fire from her policies, leading to a generational hatred for her. In addition, as many people have said already, she was involved in blaming the Hillsborough Disaster on hooliganism rather than the poor crowd management from police. There's a reason that the first statue of her that was ever raised was vandalised within an hour or two of being put in place.
