Cricket bats are 2 separate pieces, the blade and the handle. They are glued together. The blade itself breaking is an imperfection in the wood. If the flaw is visible, the wood is not uesd.

The handle has a V wedge (not a point) where it is inserted into the blade. Many of the breaks occur at the bottom of the V - where the handle finishes, and the blade has 2 'sides' rather than a full width.

I saw a player now using a bat made out of a single wood block instead of traditional two piece bats, it was in the legends league currently going on in srilanka. I believe it was gray nicolls bat. So yea if it becomes a hit, the future bats might be like this. 👍🏼🤗

@abhijithkg1467 The handle has to have layers of rubber or the shock of hitting the ball will stuff up your hands in no time. Cane is also a fair shock absorber on its own. I'm wondering what sort of wood would be dense enough to hit a leather ball without deforming while providing cushioning against the impact.

@@werriboy55 yea I thought so too, but the commentators said it they're not sure about how the handle is designed in that particular bat. The player was playing his cut shots tho, don't remember which player was that but definitely a foreign player who is retired.

Guys. these bats will not be used long enough for wear & tear to be a thing. The professionals will have new bats nearly every match. A natural break point is the V shape joint between handle & body. These bats are solid & strong.

That's not the case at all. The bats do last a lot longer than a few matches. Just watch videos from the best players in the world talking about their bats. They might have up to a dozen bats they carry in their kit and out of those maybe 3 or 4 actively using and they last for months maybe over a year. Most professional players I believe would have less than 6 bats. When you see the fanatics like Steve Smith, he is quite extreme in the amount of gear he has in his kit so that's usually a good reference point for the upper limit of players in practice.

they DONT have new bats "nearly every match" . They use bats for as long as possible, because once they get used to the weight and feel of a bat, they dont like to change it every match. They can use the same bat for years .

The handle of a bat has a protrusion that goes into a V shaped notch in the blade. These two pieces are then glued together in the notch. So this is usually the weakest link in the bat. That’s why you see most bats breaking near the handle.

bats need to be broken in, if you don't there's high chance it will break in some way, back in old days, they would be soaked in linseed oil before continuously bounced a ball on it, to prepare it, not too sure how it's done these days, as they have different methods now, but when you have a powerhouse swings at a super fast delivery, anything can happen lol

2:05 the first 2 were the blade snapping, due to an unseen imperfections in the wood; the 3rd was the bat parting at the handle join - you’ll notice the piece still in the batsman’s hand has a v-shape, which is where it joins the blade.

Bats are made from two pieces. The blade is made from willow which is a very dense wood. The handle fits into a 'V' notch and glued and wrapped. The bat will break from imperfections in the wood or cracking between the handle and blade.

The blade of the bat is a single piece of wood, but the handle is attached as you suggested - the handle attaches to the bat through a triangular splice coming off the bat, which fits into a similar shape hole in the blade. That should be the weakest area - but I think the modern bats are much more high performance, and obviously seem to break much more often.

So its not a one piece of wood for cricket bat, handle is made separate and bat separate, they joined it together. And in cricket bats there some spots doesn't matter the bat is new or old if the ball will hit in that certain spot at the speed, it can broken off. Like in this video 2-3 bats broken on the handle part but in others bats can be old.

It breaks due to a variety of reasons - The wood has to be "knocked" i.e compressed enough that it is hardened to offer a solid ping but not overdone so it breaks due to overusage or wear and tear earlier then expected. Otherwise if you use a bat that is not knocked against a brand new ball it will break as the wood is not compressed enough in a controller manner. The edges need to be prepped as well otherwise when the new ball hits the edge it will break it. Also the reason 2 peices of wood are used to make bats is because the handle is designed to absorb the impact as much as possible otherwise the shock will travel through your body which is very painful plus for longevity purpose. You guys should read up on the greatest cricketer batsman of all time, Don Bradman. He retired over 50 years ago, and most of his records are not only still valid, but some, like his 100 run Test average...no one has even come close! FYI: a 100 run Test average, if translated to baseball, would give him an unheard of lifetime batting average of .400!

Cricket bats are traditionally "knocked in", the batting surface is hit thousands of times with a wooden mallet. This compresses the structure of the wood. For modern limited overs cricket, particularly T20, the bats aren't "knocked in", this means the bat face is more springy, and the ball flies further, but makes the bat brittler and far more prone to breaking. This fine for the pros who get their kit provided free, so amateurs still knock them in. Bats are not one solid wood. They are made with two parts the handle and the paddle. It's probable to break at the neck. However, the woods' condition could also play a part.
