"That's the Greatest comeback since Lazarus" Waddell was a giant in the darts world, and is sorely missed. His commentaries were always proliferated with amusing or historically referenced statements, that really hit the spot. And his Geordie accent, affable character and absolute enthusiam and excitment for the game were infectious. Sid Waddell definitely played his part in making darts as popular as it is, and was a massive contributor to darts becoming part of mainstream sports. Certainly in Britain.

You guys should react to Sid Waddell's best quotes from his time commentating on darts. It would be interesting to see if Americans understand his references, similes, and get his humour. That guy was such a character.. he was so unique, knowledgeable, and just naturally funny.. a very creative wordsmith. I was so happy when they named the World Championship trophy the "Sid Waddell Trophy" in his honour. He really was the voice of darts and a lovely guy.. there will never be another darts commentator like Sid ❤

Taylor was discovered and sponsored by 5 time world champion Eric "the Crafty Cockney" Bristow. Sadly, Bristow developed dartitis (the yips) in the 1980s and was never quite the same afterwards.. it shortened his playing career by quite a few years. He was one of the fist darting personalities... he was very funny, super confident, a bit arrogant and cocky, but he could really back it all up with his skill on the dart board. He was one of the first players to really think through the maths side of darts and master it. He rarely, if ever, made tactical mistakes or miscounts - he would think about how to be first to a finish from the very start of each leg, and this gave him an advantage over the players at the time, who would often miss opportunities to reach a finish with mathematical errors.. Bristow instilled the same approach when mentoring Phil Taylor. Everyone else eventually realised the importance of mathematical play and started following Eric's tactical approach. Eric did so much behind the scenes to grow darts into the sport it is today. He is an absolute legend and a true darts icon - one of the most influential players to ever throw a dart. He is sorely missed by the fans who grew up watching him. Bless you, Eric ❤ Thanks for the video guys. It's great to see America developing players and building the sport in the US. And it's very cool to see American fans looking back at the darting greats of the past. It really is a sport for everyone to enjoy. I have recently started playing cricket (the US version) - what a fantastic game! I would love to see the PDC organise a cricket tournament in the future.

Eric Bristow, aka 'The Crafty Cockney' mentored Phil Taylor. Taylor spoke of phone conversations they had after Phil's early matches. Taylor said "I rang Eric, quite excited, to tell him I'd finished runner up in the Championship final. Eric said, 'Ring me back when you win' and put the phone down". A hard taskmaster was Bristow, but for good reason. Taylor had all the talent, and Bristow knew it, all he needed was someone to push him to the extreme. And that man was the brashest player on the planet, The Crafty Cockney! However, the apprentice finally defeated the master in the 1990 World Championship final, in a bit of a whitewash. Which was a massive breakthrough moment for him. It motivated Taylor to become mentally sooo strong, and he then went to win 16 world titles, most by one sided margins. The final meeting of significance between Taylor and Bristow was in 1997 in the World semi's, where, despite suffering from 'Dartitis' - a mental condition where the thrower struggles to release the dart from their hand - the ageing and ailing Bristow took Taylor all the way to a last gasp decider. A great last stand from Bristow, 10 years after he'd been World Champ and the dominant force himself. It was a changing of the guard, and time to hand over the reigns to Phil. And boy, did he grab it with both hands. He did lose the odd one though, Dennis Priestley, the slowed paced, dogged and maticulous northerner, nicked a world title win from him. But Taylor overall was a sensation, and more than lasted the course. Still winning mega matches until his retirement aged in his late fifties. He took on the new guard of players, including the Enigma, Michael Van Gerwin in his latter years, and still could still see them off. Van Gerwin is unstoppable at his best, and is 'The Problem'. Well Taylor found the solution ;) Their head to heads are a piece of art, and sporting history. Phil Taylor. The best player to ever pick up a dart. Simple.

I think darts is so popular mostly because anyone can pick up a dart and play. But as you have seen the difference between being good and great is massive. I remember watching the 1990 world championship Phil Taylors first world title against Eric Bristow. I remember going to school the next day and the words Phil Taylor is God graffitied on the outside of the music room wall. And in 1992 when he won the second world title against Mike Gregory he proved it going all the way to a sudden death leg in that final. Phil Taylors 16 world titles is statically the best. But to be honest i still prefer Eric when he was at his best. He was the trailblazer for all of them. And he also spoted Phil Taylor potential, before he did.

And, as you say, it's an every person game. Male or female, old or young, there's even events for people wheelchairs. And, as mentioned in my other comment, you can get a reasonably good dartboard and some darts for less than $50 and play it at home on your own. I got a pretty good dartboard with a surround to protect the wall and some pretty decent tungsten darts and it cost me about £70, which is about $100. But you don't need to buy the ones I bought. I went for a more expensive board and darts because I am a darts player and I new I was going to be getting back into playing so I chose something I wanted to last a me a few years. But if you're starting out then there's nothing wrong with getting the cheaper versions. Then if you're enjoying it you can then upgrade your board. In fact if there is some bars near you that have a dartboard talk to the owner as they've probably got a few old dartboards in the cellar that they will give you. They are quite heave and cumbersome to just put in the trash so you have to take it to the tip or the recycling centre yourself. So they probably buy a new one and just put the old one in the cellar and they'll be perfectly fine for playing on at home. But the pubs might have a darts team that the play other pub teams so the owner of the bar doesn't want the other pub teams playing on a tatty board so they change it every couple of seasons.

I've been getting back into darts. Just in my house. I'll put on some TV shows and I'll spend a few hours throwing darts. I'm no where near as good as those players, obviously. I am better than average and I when I played for the local pub I was one of the best players in the team. But.... I've never ever got a 180. I came really close yesterday. On my first 3 darts of the day I hit two treble twenties and I got really excited and instead of just throwing the 3rd dart right away I kinda took a beat and then threw the last dart and I hit a treble 18. It's still a great score but I really wanted my first 180. In the first clip you see Phil get a 158 finish. That's my highest finish. I urge you to get a dartboard in your house. They are not expensive and you dont even need another person. You can just play it on your own. You'll be surprised at how far you walk just going to and from the board.
