Wow...this really brought my mood down! 🙃 But it's understandable. This movie is very much rooted in Kerala and has so many cultural nuances. In fact it was a miracle that Korbin & Rick understood & loved it as much as they did.

That is the main problem with small scale movies rooted in culture. They don't translate well cross cultures and their ability to create an impact is limited. Well made action movies with simple plot lines like RRR are the one's that usually cross cultural boundaries easily. Many people don't understand this simple logic and keep recommending these kinds of movies to foreigners who has never seen any Indian movies before and aware of Indian culture.
@kritipathak56812 жыл бұрын
I don't think so... despite the fact that the movie is rooted in culture Kumbalangi nights is a classic and should be and very much is a cinema lover's treat...that translates across languages....and Rick and Korbin are true artists and hence they picked up the pulse... whoever didn't get it its their loss.
@navneethsundar97282 жыл бұрын
@@kritipathak5681 very true
@harishrao20002 жыл бұрын
@@kritipathak5681 Rick and Korbin have been seeing Indian movies for a while. So, they understand Indian culture lot better than an average western viewer. Also, you cannot give examples of cinephiles and expect average public to be like them. "whoever didn't get it its their loss." That is a very bad attitude. You use action movies and spectacles to draw wider audience and then introduce your artsy movies once they are familiar enough with your culture. That is what Hollywood did worldwide and that is why it is the leading film industry in the world. English language is also a major factor for their success obviously. I am pretty sure these people would not have watched this movie if they weren't blown away by RRR. This is a simple fact, if you cannot accept that your film industry will never grow.

KN review is like KN- slow burner and laid back. 😛 On a serious note, most of them haven’t got the movie but they don’t want to openly say it because Korbin will kill them 😅 I agree subtitles at some places are off too. Surprised that Someone actually understood subtitles are not correct without knowing original language 😊👏

Some of the iconic scenes that deserved discussion are saji’s immediate scenes after his friend’s death. Getting slapped in the police station, Hitting his head in the electric post , calling Frankie to say he can’t cry and needs help with a slight smile. And then of course the therapy scene which was discussed here.

This is what my secret wish out of watching you guys were. It also confirmed for me the fact that both of you have the views you have and the attention your reviews have from the populace is because you both pick up cadence very quickly. I dont think its particularly attached to the Indian content but I get why for those who can receive cadence so easily there is an addictive nature to our inherent rhythms. Not trying to exalt it to any degree. I've seen you guys like movies in the south Indian film industry that I dislike but I give you a pass in envy because you fall into the rhythm of it so quickly. Your friends are so kind for having shared their views and I hope they watch more malayalam movies and i guarantee that the rhythm will sooner or later get them. They will, just as I did. After all I was an indian boy who raised himself on American content and found the cadence and then the freedom. The subtitle thing is a very real factor which we are realizing here and its unrealistic to ask people to learn the bloody language. However, this would be a good time for Americans to ask the question "Is our content being translated appropriately to the general audience of the world?". This problem finding a solution means elevating the task of subtitling to an art form level as opposed to a mere utility. It is the eye through which the world sees you. The translator must have as important a role as the DOP. How authentically he converts the script holds the key to the rest of the planet. Much like Shakespeare or Tagore could not be translated by any tom dick or harry. So must our movies invite great writers to translate our films for the world. Encouraging a cornucopia of cultural exchanges thatll do our world great favours in diversity. Anyway if you guys come down to kerala. As emissaries of crossover cultural content you have a serious place in our space.

Pretty interesting perspectives and views All around... Emmett, Cassandre and Douglas were pretty spot on with what they had to say(meaning they knew almost exactly what they were watching, enjoyed the movie for the reasons that they gave... ❤️🙏) The other four were more American in their interpretation of what they did and did not understand... Not so much in a negative way but they are opinions from viewers not used to seeing different kinds of Indian cinema... Had a slight feeling that you were viewing everything a little more closely than you would while watching an American movie especially because at least some of you have seen the osr review of Kumbalangi nights (n yes The shift in tones is mostly a regular feature in Indian movies) Fishing nets in Kerala Are pretty strong and they also have Chinese made nets which are laid out in the sea in the morning (later taken out to see their catch in order to auction and sell off) It is not easy for fish to pass through these nets. Likewise Shammi got caught in a net of his own making ending up in a situation where he could not use his class, money or connections to wiggle through. Was fun seeing this video Korbin athough you probably caught them at a time where they were the hungriest, busiest and so very sleepy 💜😂🙏Missed Stephanie,Zack and definitely Rick here😄😍

Actually I think casting Black American or Black person in a positive note is a bold move and I have only seen it in Malayalam movies. That is because Indian culture is still obsessed with fair skin, they often still cast fair skin ppl especially female lead. . Also almost all music videos in other industries now a days have random white ppl as backup dancers which I don't understand. So yes it is a good move. There's actually plenty of discussion about colorism in the industry online.

This review is absolutely amazing. To answer Soraya's question, I believe that choosing a Black American was a bold move. Because Indians have a strange obsession with fair skin and a crazy obsession with white foreigners. The majority of films only feature white foreigners. Despite their weak acting, they would be held in high regard because of their skin colour.

Unless you are from Kerala , you would not catch all the cultural nuances. Not just knowing the language, but actually staying there in the Keralite society. Like u can't just dump your husband in Indian society even if he is weird and controlling. Or having unrelated and unmarried woman staying in your house is looked down and seen as taboo. Sajis is the elder brother , who as per society should be respected by his brothers. But he doesn't get any.

Good discussion. But having watched this movie many times, I felt the point of the movie was missed by most. Summed up by TJ.My summary of the movie would be a house, devoid of female presence in the beginning, represented subtly throu Franky's dream and the raw fight sounds that makes Bonny don't want to enter the house. This being changed to the "mother", tourist and baby, transforming and balancing the masculinity by feminine presence. On the surface, it looks like the damsel in distress being saved by the brothers. But deeply, it's the brothers being uplifted by the feminine presence in their lives that restores balance in their lives.
@razil62442 жыл бұрын
The translation in Amazon Prime is way way better and poetic than that in KZbin
@deathstarresident9 ай бұрын
So this is kind of a hard read especially for non native speakers - but the subtle implication is that they were not related in any way. All 4 brothers were abandoned and a man and this lady decided to raise them until they can take care of themselves. The man passes away during and woman moves on to her gospel path. This is why she doesn’t go back to stay with them - but she didn’t have the heart to tell them that she was not their mother. But Saji and Boney knew. Thats why they defend the “mother” when Bobby complains about her lack of involvement in their lives. And at that point Bobby also understands that she is probably not his mother (or Frankie’s who is the youngest)

The story arc of Vijay and Saji can be hard to grasp because it relies on comments and dialogues widely spaced in the film to put together. Frankie accuses Saji of sponging off Vijay's earnings from his ironing cart. We can also see Saji making free with Vijay's cash box earlier. What drives Saji to attempt suicide is Vijay telling him that although Vijay would always be grateful to Saji for helping him out when he first came to town, and that's why Vijay was cool with subsidizing Saji's lifestyle, it would finally have to stop, because Vijay was expecting his kid soon. Saji feeling betrayed by this, is what leads to him attempting suicide.
