It has been said that cruising is the art of doing boat work in exotic locals and honestly that’s not far from the truth. Atticus 2 is in super good shape, but all boats are in constant need of routine maintenance. Salt water, fresh water, and UV rays are constantly doing everything they can to destroy seagoing boats and extreme motion means that any week link can and will be exposed at the worst possible moment. So now is the time to for us to get on top of our preventative maintenance and there are still a handful of improvements that we’re hoping to make as well.
We decided to spend the winter at D-marin, Turgutreis in Turkey for several reasons. The winters here is mild, Turkey is renown for having skilled labor at reasonable prices, its outside of the Schengen region so we can recharge our Schengen Visas, but more than anything we’ve been told by several other sailors that Turkey is their favorite country in the Med. It’s such a unique place considered a transcontinental country, not quite a part of Europe, and not quite a part of Asia. And that’s exactly how the culture feels, it’s a blend of two extremely different places. Turkey is one of the most secular muslim majority countries in the world. It’s now home to two of the seven wonders of the ancient world. And for centuries, the Ottoman Empire was the preeminent power in the Mediterranean.
So this week we’re going to get to know this fascinating place before we hunker down to start doing boat projects

Yes , I noticed that too.. e.g. no one says that when they go from Italy to Muslim Albania.. it's just one country to another. The biggest difference between Greece and Turkey might be the alphabets.. as an American tourist it should be easier to read the Turkish alphabet.

​ @stouellette The alphabet that you think is the Latin alphabet is actually the alphabet that the Etruscans, who are genetically proven to be of 97% Turk origin, took with them when they left Asia and developed it during the so-called early Roman period. Etruscans were a state that was destroyed by Latins of Persian origin in the 600s BC. The Greeks are actually a community of Turk origin that has assimilated as a result. The Greeks took and developed their alphabet from the Phoenician alphabet, which was also proto-Turkish. Russians also took their alphabet from them. The name of the Cyrillic alphabet comes from the Roman saint Cyril. The Muslim country discourse is nothing but the result of people of Middle Eastern origin living in Turkiye exaggerating the situation. Religions exist to enforce their requirements, not to talk about them. What these communities think is required by their religion and the commands in their books are completely opposite. If we had allowed it, they would have corrupted this too, just as they had corrupted the previous divine religions.

Etruscans destroyed by Persian origin? Greeks are a community of Turkish origin? I think you are learning history from very wrong sources, it is a well established fact that Ancient Greeks and Italians are culturally and genetically descendants of Late Bronze Age Levantine and Egyptian people.

As a result of the research, 97% is Turk. The result of thermoluminescence-based age calculations on the bones twice, in 1960 and 1972, is 15 thousand years old. The person who conducted the research is Danish physicist Vagn Mejdahi. The problem is already here. How do you write these without having any knowledge or on what - on what scientific research are you trying to reject them?

I'm a Canadian and I've lived and sailed for the past 35 yrs next to 300 million muslims (Malaysia to the north, Indonesia to the south - the largest population of muslims on the planet) and I have nothing but great experiences with both countries. Apart from the very rare incidences of violence in other high-risk areas (southern Thailand and southeastern Philippines) I have never felt threatened or at risk in any way - far from it! In fact, everywhere I've been in both Malaysia and Indonesia has been a true pleasure - warm, gentle people with open arms and generosity beyond most my experiences in western countries. I've sailed all over SE Asia and the muslims are the nicest people evrytime.

Same here, over the past 25 years I've spent untold amounts of time in Turkey. Never really had a problem and since I travel with my family, we've always felt safer there than we do here in Philadelphia. Low crime, safe environment and fantastic food. Great place to be IMO. But like all places it has its negatives as well. One it isn't the cleanest place you'll find. People throw garbage around with zero regard. The second issue is simply how corrupt and greedy local Turks are. If they're robbing their own family members, what do you think they'll do to you? lol

Was stationed at a USAF remote site for 2 years in Turkey. I enjoyed every minute of it! Got a Turkish drivers license and drove to many areas not visited by tourists. Visited several original churches of Christ (I believe there are 7). Spent a lot of time on the Aegean coast (every weekend during spring and summer/early Fall). Couldn’t beat the price(1991-93) $20 U.S. a day for room and 3 meals right on the beach! Hoping to make it back there someday….Cheers

They can't understand even a very simple thing. I speak 3 languages; Turkish and Greek as my native languages, and English as my first foreign language. I say "Turkey" when speaking English, "Τουρκία" when speaking Greek, and "Türkiye" when speaking Turkish. Likewise, I say "Ελλάδα" when speaking Greek, "Greece" when speaking English, and "Yunanistan" when speaking Turkish - which I say knowing that the names given by other nations are often inaccurate, like Yunanistan; which basically means the land of the Ionians. We're not all Ionians. Plus, almost all of them call Xanthi İskeçe, Komotini Gümülcine, Alexandroupoli Dedeağaç, Thessaloniki Selanik etc. How can you act so sensitive while being so insensitive, right? @@vasileiosbitas1794

That was a great video, so informative. Many years ago we also travelled Turkey in winter with a child under 1 in a backpack so this video briuggt back good memories. I remember huge amounts of tea being consumed and the kindness of the elderly Turkish with our baby. Love the carpet u bought. Best wishes with your job list- it was good to hear it was primarily boat jobs for your benefit and not the boats benefit.

We've documented a 10 degree Celcius drop in temperature inside our boat cabin just by hanging deck awnings. The awnings are big so we spent some time figuring out how to design a quick tie and release system which we recommend doing. As far as we're concerned they are a must in hot climates. Sun awnings are a really good idea. When we sailed in Turkey the awnings really made our boat a lot more comfortable. We had two, one aft of the mast and the other ahead of it. Those awnings, combined with a wind scoop on the fore hatch and several electric fans greatly improved our lives.

I'm an Irish (lapsed) Catholic. I spent three months cycling across Turkey on my way to India back in 2008. I loved the Call To Prayer, the food, the people and the scenery. I was invited into so many peoples homes and given free bed and board. The next country I cycled through was Iran, which was even more amazing. I was treated like a rock and roll star in Pakistan.

Be careful when sailing on the southside of Kos, winds can pick up in the afternoon till 48 knots, sail early in the morning, after Knidos, wind is mostly calmed down. Also in the neighborhood of Datca wind can pick up. But you definitely must visit Datca. There are fresh water springs so you can get fresh water there. Market on saterday is also nice. When you visit Bodrum with your boat, you can get a mooring or anker before the castle, don’t need to go to the marina.

Another low energy method of cooling a boat is to use ocean water pumped through a heat exchanger with a fan blowing cabin air through the heat exchanger. A tube lowered overboard to 10-20 feet deep picks up pretty cool water in most locals.

Wen we came back from a visit in Turkey everybody was delighted by my haircut (The Germans often do a terrible job) - I told them it was expensive: 862,50DM (OK, long time ago) - it was 860DM flight to Bodrum and 2,5DM for the haircut in Turgutreis. Love that place. But more the city and its farmers market.

Great experience! Their carpet production is a work of art. The amount of hours to make one is incredible. If you noticed in my master bedroom we have one hanging on the wall.
