One of our favorite activities while sailing the world is Freediving. When you first start out, it’s pretty intimidating to kick your fins up, point your head down, and to just keep going deeper and deeper, as you feel the water getting colder, the increasing pressure squeezing on your chest, and the light from above slowly fading into a dim twilight.
But once you overcome your fear the reward is the sensation of absolute freedom, of weightless flight through a strange world with zero equipment. We’ve practiced freediving for years and the deepest that we’ve ever gone was 100 feet, so about the height of a ten story building. But a couple hundred years ago some of the best free divers in the world lived on the Greek island of Symi. Those divers could go as deep as 260 feet and could stay down for up to 4 minutes!
But this was a very dangerous activity, and for generations divers from Symi swam to the ocean floor and risked their lives, all in pursuit of a treasure that made their small and arid island one of the wealthiest places in the entire region. Now last week we finally sailed away from Turkey after having spent 6 months exploring that country. And with Symi being the first stop on our journey across the Mediterranean, we wanted to figure out just what treasure attracted generations of divers to risk their lives combing the sea floor. And the answer, I think, will surprise you.

I was going to write this. I am very sorry about Mosley's death. In recent years, I have only been watching his documentaries on BBC. Rest in peace Michael Mosley🙏 You have helped me a lot with my health.
@pinetree4676

I was going to note the same. Heat stroke is a killer. Michael Mosley died June 5. Not sure how many weeks in advance this video was filmed but doubt they were there at the same time as they would have noticed the large search and rescue efforts going on. I've followed Sailing Project Atticus for a number of years and really did a double take when this episode on Symi and hiking popped up. Perhaps it serves a strong, practical reminder that heat stroke can be deadly and can strike even the fit and those with medical training at any time.

There are diving restrictions in many parts of Turkish waters that i think it is same for Greek waters. Simply because there are really tons of historical artifacts still waiting for archaeological work. So you might get fined if you freely dive around and wouldn't advise taking them if you find anything. It might be considered as archaeological looting..

As a person that lives in Greece the house that had no door or windows and had the small stones on the ground as decoration, is an ancient house that may actually date thousands of years B.C. So it might of not have been renovated only because it might be a piece of history over there.
