Yep, there's also something called a "Johann" (just google "Mein Johann"), it is a metal plate that is shaped like a 1-euro-coin on one end, and you can stick that into the cart to get the chain off and can then immediately just pull it back out, most go on a key chain so it's really handy because a lot of people forget to take their coins back out

celina de What it has to do with your comment, Celina, is that it shows that your money is funny money, Monopoly money. During the financial crisis ten years ago, German banks were begging the US Federal Reserve for dollars, so that they wouldn't collapse. And not just German banks. You can read about it. That's what it has to do with your comment about real money.

You were prolly looking for eggs in the fridge but that’s not where they’re at. Look around, you’ll find them. All grocery stores have eggs but they’re not cooled cause we don’t clean them and therefore they keep their protective natural layer. So, no need to waste energy for washing + cooling. More efficient! 🇩🇪

Same here in New Zealand and Australia and most of the Brit Commonwealth countries. I think it is only USA that requires all their commercially sold eggs be "cleansed" which, as Timo Ernst says, then means US must refridgerate their eggs cause they lose their natural protection and will go bad quickly.

It's not true that Aldi does not have eggs. You were probably just looking in the wrong spot. In the US it's mandatory to wash eggs before selling them. Washing them not only get's rid of dirt, but also of the outer layer on the shell that protects it from bacteria. Thus, US eggs have to be stored refridgerated. In Germany it's forbidden to wash eggs before selling them. Here they are being sold the way them come from the hens. That's why there's sometimes dirt on or feathers sticking to them. AND: they are not stored in fridges, but on shelves. Only when people come home they sometimes chose to put them in the fridge to make them last longer. But they don't have to like in the US... Also, I don't understand what the big deal with the sausages is. I don't think they're much worse that beef jerky or sth. After all, you should eat them in moderation :D However, it's cool to see what's new and special to you. I was totally overwhelmed at Walmart and Target when I visited the US, e.g. I had never seen popcorn seasoning before. And there was a lot of different flavors..

What do you even mean by healthy? Do they keep you going by providing calories and protein? Yes, definitly. Does eating a lot of red meat increase your cancer risk? Probably, according to current science. Will you get overweight from eating them? Only if you eat too much. Will there be marco/micro nutrients missing in them? For sure, but that's why you do not eat them exlusively. Healthy is such a vague term. Answer as such is: No, they do not kill you. Yes, they can harm you like any other food.

Checkouts at ALDI are the fastest in Germany. It's like a law: The cheaper the store => the faster the checkout. 😅 "Fun fact": At EDEKA people quickly complain when they have to wait a bit longer (like 5min) in the checkout line (I used to work as a cashier there). But this almost never happens at ALDI. It's like people also expect less service when they pay less. 💁🏼‍♀️

I'm an American who's been living in Germany for the past 13 years and for me, the biggest differences between US and German supermarkets is the selection (MUCH less selection here in Germany), the layout at the discount markets (everything just stacked up, very little visual merchandising going on) and, like you guys mentioned, the stress of checking out. The people at the tills go at lightning speed and you definitely have to have a strategy with the way you place your items on the conveyor belt. Also, they don't tend to chat with you the way they do in the US. There are exceptions, of course, but the general rule is that they say hello and goodbye and that is absolutely IT. One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention, especially when you were looking at all the processed meats, is that SO many things are available in non-refrigerated form here that we're not used to in the States -- not only a greater variety of meat products, but also cheeses, milk and eggs (by the way, Aldi definitely has eggs. You just won't find them in the refrigerated section). That really perplexed me when I first got here; I was like, "is this safe??!" I'm also surprised that you guys were so taken with the bread slicer when American supermarkets often have NUT BUTTER machines! I understand that fresh bread is a thing of wonder, but for me -- nothing tops freshly churned, warm almond butter straight from the machine ;-) Finally, I think a lot of the supermarkets here (discount markets AND the regular ones) are turning into one-stop shops, especially with their weekly non-food specials. This week at Penny you can buy vacuum cleaners, and Aldi is full of Christmas decorations, clothes, shoes, relatively high-end electronics etc.

Thats just sausage, neither especially healthy nor unhealthy. Edit: What the other commenters said. 3. Yes, Aldi should have eggs. 4. If the cashier is to fast for you, just ask them to slow down a bit. And good thinking about the order of items on the conveyor belt. ;)
@notroll1279

You should have pointed out that Aldi is Germany's leading discount food supermarket chain - Trader Joe's is their American subsidiary. They have fewer articles than a full supermarket - and though they do sell processed foods such as the breakfast stuff and sweets you showed, you can buy lots of fruit and vegetables (partly organic) of a fairly high quality. On average, they turn over their whole inventory once a day - so things aren't there long enough to grow stale. So if you are used to make your food choices with health in mind, you won't leave Germany fat - even if you limit yourself to buying at Aldi, Lidl, Penny or other discount markets. Many Germans split their business between Aldi and other discount stores for basic staples and other supermarkets when they need more choice.

You not recycling an alluminum can or Someone using a plastic bag means NOTHING ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING The leftists have brainwashed people into thinking they are polluting the "environment" by not recycling,using plastic bags and not paying "carbon taxes" etc etc etc ITS A HUGE SCAM !!!!!! They'll more or less fast get into the water, woods etc where they harm nature. So if everyone actually disposed of their rubbish correctly, we wouldn't have such a problem with plastic waste. But as you mentioned above, many countries don't have these disposal systems etc and even in high developed western countries there are always people throwing their waste on the ground. It's so sweet seeing you so happy about things we don't even consider special. But that's just normal, i probably would react the same to things in different countries... So as for a system for putting back your groceries fast enough, there are some differences in the stores. Some stores (even the same line of store differs in these kind of things) have an extra smaller conveyor belt like thing after the cashier, so you have more space/time for your things. But some other stores just have about 50cm of space where your groceries land after the cashier has scanned them. So if i only doing a small shopping i can go to those with the little space, but if i know it's gonna be a really big purchase i'd go to those stores that give me more space. I also have a system for putting things onto the conveyor belt. I usually don't take a shopping cart, i almost always just use my reusable cotton bags. So i sort the things on top of the conveyor belt by putting the heavier things first and things like frozen food. After that comes smaller packages that don't care if they're squeezed a bit and then more fragile things. Fruits and vegetables end up on top (and are the last thing lying on the belt). That way things don't get squished or broken and i've gotten really fast in sorting them into my bag. But yeah, i really wish they would just take a bit more time, especially if there isn't a big line...why the haste with this? Guess that's just something of old german mentality... Enjoy your stay here! :)

IN MY EYES, no food is per se unhealthy, but (of course) if you eat too much of it, it will become unhealthy, no doubt about it. If you eat one of those Mini Salami Sticks from time to time, they won't hurt you, but you should not base your entire nutrition on it.

@silas nacita Those sausages are ok to eat, but just that. They are usually high in fat though. If you wanna have these snack sausages and have them taste good, go to Meier III or check teegut, as they sometimes have packaged meats, but from a local butcher, not that processed industrial food/ meat you often find at Aldi. Same goes for the desserts. In my mind, the best deserts come from the bakery on the intersection left of Sparkasse in Marburg. Also, if you guys feel a bit homesick, there is an American 60s style diner in Marburg (at least it was 3 years ago) not far away from the Aldi you shopped at. It is called Chevy‘s. If you and Katlyn want to have nice coffee and cake by the river, try „Roter Stern“ not far away from the African place you once had dinner pool. It is a commune run cafe, has nice cake and coffee and you can sit right by the river.

One thing I would really love to do when I get to Germany is visit the grocery stores. I would have a lot of fun discovering all the goodies there. I live in Virginia and we just got a Lidl store near us. First time I went there I was able to use the bread slicer and it was so cool!

So you gotta define what you mean with healthy, if you question the quality i can tell you they are safe, you will never find a meat in germany that will make you sick, ofc the 2€ chicken at aldi for example from the fridge is not as good as the 8€ bio-meat but if we talk about „safe“ you are good to go, to talk about healthyness is generell well it doenst matter in what its packed, salami (the sausagetype you showed) has besides protein lots of fat and well that can make you fat, obviously you wouldnt count a candy as healthy either.

Maybe another interesting bit of knowledge: in Germany only the cash registers at the really cheap discount grocery stores (Aldi, Lidl, Netto, sometimes Edeka) are that fast and at the end of the register there's almost no room for the stuff they pull over the scanner, in order for customers to really hurry up putting their stuff back in their bags or their cart and walk away. They do this to speed up their process and make more money per register. Other, more upscale stores (Like Rewe, Real or tegut), leave more "shelf"-space behind the scanner so you have more time to pack everything into your bags. But in general you pay a bit extra on everything for that convenience. Crazy, right?!

alexcaschde not the fat is bad but the sugar is. The sugar industry came up with the fat is bad hoax, so people would ignore the fact that actualy sugar is way more unhealthy, which was backed up by studies ;) A traditional Salami would never contain sugar, most likely air dried and comes in "less fat" types as well. Just watch from where you biy and if the ingredients are natural or artificial. some of the snacksausages contain up to 4 diffrent sugars, which are simply named in codes or as chemicals, too fool us ;)

so "Milchreis" is basicly short rice(or special milk rice), milk and sugar boiled together, the recipe is really easy to do yourself, and it tastes better than the canned ones. And I can just tell you to wait for Christmas, because then you get the best German sweets, like Pfeffernüsse (Peppernuts?) and stuff.

Basically, i only go to Aldi to buy very basic stuff, like Toilet paper, and foods we commonly use, potatoes, olives, Peperonis, butter, milk etc.We never but snacks and sweets at Aldi, because they mostly have their own brand that are ripoffs from other, more expensive ones, and they taste bad and are less heathy because of cheaper fats and fatty acids and stuff. I sometimes buy chips/crisps there, but mostly I get Cola or their flagship energy drink (Strong Force), or as I said, very basic things for the household.For more specialized stuff, I go to Edeka, which is the grocery store for more expensive brands. Also, the most meats and sausages at Aldis are NOT healthy at all. But still more healthy than ANY meat in the US LUL

It depends on where are the Shop is located what will happen to the shopping carts. In a few areas in Germany you don´t have to put a coin in it because there is no one who wants to take the cart with him or leave it at the parking lot. In some parts of Dortmund, for example, you have to put a coin in, and as an extra, when you try to leave the shops property a brake on one wheel is activated. Otherwise the people take carts with them and leave them, in better case, at the front of the houses where they living, in the bad case they throw them in the next river or similar. But, this bad it its only in some areas of bigger towns where the most people who don´t do such things not really wants to live.

You are seriously concerned whether the sausages are bad for you, when you think about buying these "chemical" wafers made out of sugar, fat and stuff, whose name primarily consists of numbers??? THAT's comedy! Small tip: Don't buy pre-cut bread. It ttstays fresh for a longer time if you just cut the number of slices you want to eat right at the moment. The crust keeps it fresh.
@andrewozenilek5596
@andrewozenilek5596 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, and another thing aboutbread etc. Don't put baked goods in a plastic bag. If they tough plastic they will almost immediately start to "sweat"meaning the moisture from inside gets sucked out, the crust will get rubbery and there will be actual drops on your bread/rolls. I guess those perforated bags at Aldi work, but better use a paper bag or a cotton bag.

ok you guys are so funny i am from england living in france and working in germany when you go to aldi which we have in all 3 contries i mentioned you are not suposed to bag at the checkout you simply put it back in your trolly then there is a counter behind the checkout where you can take your time bagging or what we do is use our re-uasble bags and pack at the back of the car. also most other supermarkets such as kik, edeka, penny, netto etc all let you bag at the counter at a more resonable pace. i would also like you to know that we dont speak much french or german so communiction with employees can be challenging but most speak english if they want to i hope this helps

Most of what you have noticed is valid for the rest of West and North Europe (except UK and Ireland). The bread cutting machine was actually very big and cumbersome and very very slow. At least compared to the ones we have in Belgium. But is do work a lot in Germany (like one week every month), so i have also been comparing. Enjoy your stay!

Bloß hat Trader Joe's halt einfach eine etwas andere Aufmachung. 😊 Die Produkte sind aber ähnlich. We do have bigger "Supermarkets", too. Look for a REAL, Kaufland, Marktkauf, Edeka Center or REWE Center (the Centers are bigger than the normal Edeka or REWE stores). ALDI, LIDL, Penny, Netto are Discounters with mainly the normal needs for everyday and a small, weekly changing non food assortment. Also they have often like e.g. Asian, American, Mexican, Italian, Spanish weeks with special foods. BTW: The two brothers Karl & Theo Albrecht, who built up ALDI and invented the Discount principle (AL = Albrecht DI = Discount) were one of the richest guys in Germany. They separated ALDI in Nord (North) and Süd (South) with different assortments and also different Logos. They died in 2010 and 2014.
