You're damn right I was mad at you! But not as mad as all the SPR fanboys will be haha! Awesome job, mate. However, we could have made this video 2-hours long if we wanted to haha. And yes, the M1's recoil is significant as it is with most rifles of the time; hence why we used live ammo in my WWII film 'Reveille'.

I am serving as a paratrooper and combat medic. It’s not uncommon to have guys screaming when injured. It depends on injury type and the person. Most people won’t even realize they’re shot sometimes due to adrenaline. If a man is screaming we know their airway is patent and they’re conscious so it’s actually a good thing. You are completely right about the medic scene as well. You would not stop under fire to work on a causality. Keep up the assault and take out the threat that’s killing all your guys, otherwise more men are going to die. Wish we could’ve seen soldiers applying self aid in this scene.

If I ever have a problem that I can solve I’d call over the Senior. There’s absolutely no reason why so many medics would be crowded around a casualty. I have owned an M1 for many years & I guarantee you the actual recoil is significantly more noticeable when firing rapidly than is seen in the movie. A big man like Diesel, who is well trained with an M1, can bury most of the recoil, but it would still be more noticeable on screen if it was a live round… or if they cared to accurately represent rapid fire.

After that I think he is going to drag that casualty to a safer place (triage), and that casualty is still in Yellow triage, because he is still concious, he can still scream in pain. In terms of the physical historical accuracy of the beach itself, they did plan to film on Omaha Beach, but the French government wouldn't allow it. While not perfect, the location they did film in was generally speaking, very good. It's definitely not easy to find a location similar to the Omaha Beach and the Vierville draw, especially not as it was in 1944 with all of its bombed out houses and bunkers.

My then 19-yr-old Father landed on Omaha beach on June 6, 1944. He didn't live long enough to be able to see "Saving Private Ryan", but one of the things i specifically remember him saying about the landing was him hearing young soldiers on the beach, often wounded but sometimes just frozen in fear and crying for their "Mamas." It was a real thing.

I had a chance to talk to few Russian WW2 Vets , growing up in Russia in the 80s. We would have Vets come and talk to kids at schools a week before D-day (May 9th), about the war . Many times Vets would have hard time finishing their stories because emotions would take over. Some even would start crying. At the end of the stories, kids were aloud to ask questions. One time we had a woman who was a med during WW2 and she was very emotional when she was telling us stories. At the end, she was asked what was her worst memory , and she replied that she constantly hears word " Mama" in her head, because that is who wounded call for. She said that most of wounded would just call for their Moms over and over. There is no conversations like we see in the movies. Also, Medics were not allowed to retrieve wounded during the battle, but had regular soldiers bring them to trenches if possible. If Med is dead, she could not help anyone and more would die.

I don’t know the history on D-day exactly, but the Medic stuff did and still does happen. As much as it’s emphasized is training, sometimes guys just do what their gut tells them is right. You might have some high speed medic who ignores common sense and training in order to save a guy he knows is gone. Sometimes medics operate on one guy because they get tunnel vision and don’t think about their surroundings. Sometimes they end up with positive results, sometimes negative. It’s a point we always emphasize in training. “Don’t perform aid until the enemy is suppressed”, “don’t operate unless the location is cleared”, “prioritize men you can save”. The reason we hit these topics so much is because guys ignore training and logic in the heat of the moment and simply follow their gut. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

HistoryLegends is my favorite Ukrainian war analyst when things go badly for Ukraine. Things now go pretty well for Ukraine. Supply line between Bakhmut and Lysyschansk secured (which means the Golden Bridge isn't working as planned yet), the fortress of Severodonetsk is holding for now, they stopped the Russians at the Siversky Donets south of Lyman (probably because of the Chalk Mountains) and now the Ukrainians are even starting a counteroffensive north of Kherson. It's a pretty flat terrain with only tree lines and high grass to hide in. So it's the question if Ukraine can hold it. I get the impression the M777 is causing the slow rise in Ukrainian fire power, although the expiration of the first 3 months contracts of Russian soldiers might also help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3WnfqiLaNCjrKs Ukrainians might have one potato per person to eat each day at Severodonetsk, but the Russian problems like mentioned, but also their parasitic allies like DPR, LPR (and Belarus) aren't helping Russia either.

He said I never would have done that. Bad for morale. Frightens the lads if their commander is afraid. But it was explained to him that the audience wouldn't believe it if he strolled across, under fire. @historylegends Just my own thoughts on your comment regarding the Germans staying in their bunker's whilst the Americans flanked them, many of the defending units were Ost battalions commanded by NCO's that would likely shoot them if they retreated without orders. These Ost battalions as you know we're generally lower grade troops only fit for static defence, but of course there were also some good experienced German divisions like the 352nd infantry Division. Also In the thick of the action Comms may not have been easy so some of the strong points may not have known they were being bypassed and surrounded until a few grenades or a flame unit said "hello" from the rear. Great analysis as always, from your English cousin "rosbif" 😁

The M1 Garand is cycling in the movie, so they are either using live ammunition (which they aren't), or they have a semi-obstructed barrel used with blanks, which is what they're using; we know this because of the recoil. Without a bullet, the gas system wouldn't cycle, so they partly obstruct the barrel to trap some of the gas which is forced into the gas operating system; this does add some recoil, but only some. Since only some of the gas is trapped, and the rest is free to leave out the barrel, this means you only feel a fraction of the recoil- probably 60% or less.

I mean the simple fact that you see ACTUAL ARMIES, wth tanks and artillery vs a few dozen guys just screaming and doing stupid things like bunching behind weak cover makes a huge difference.

I think the medic scene could be somewhat believable, though still unlikely. From my understanding according to the Geneva convention it was a war crime to knowingly shoot at medics with clear identifiable insignia and the Germans were actually fairly respectful and generally avoided targeting medics. As for so many medics trying to save one guy, if I remember correctly, they referred to him as the surgeon so he was probably pretty important. Or that's at least how I've always rationalized it. Otherwise, yeah it's a little ridiculous.

The reason for this could be to emphasize how humanitarian the US forces were in contrast to the mere killer machines of the Germans. Crouching under fire, behind as skinny object as hedgehog, is unrealistic like you said. You would like to be as low to the ground aka prone as possible. Also, modern thinking is that as long as there's enemy precense, wounded have to fend for themselves. There's actually a video clip from Iraq where multiple soldiers get wounded and die while trying to save single wounded soldier from the middle of the street. Even leaders. While an act of courage, from tactical leadership perspective, it's stupid. Leader should coordinate troops to give suppressing fire and use other ways like smoke for cover (and primarily to eliminate threat) before trying to evacuate anybody.

I went to Omaha beach and other locations, like point de hoc, carentan, St. Mère d'église, and other german bunker installations and museums. For the beach, we went bathing, it's extremely flat and large. At eb, you can walk for hundreds of meters on wet sand before you eventually hit very shallow water. It's like 400 meters out, and then only like knee deep. Another thing that really impressed me was how ineffective allied bombardment was against the bunkers. Point de hoc looks like the moon, huge craters all over, but only like 1 bunker got hit "a bit." The Germans were able to evacuate all of the guns, and by pure chance, the Americans stumbled upon them.

29:55 to answer your question about the M1 Garand firing- it's not the worst surplus gun to fire, it's weight helps with the recoil. The gun shoots 30-06 168g ball ammo, so to keep all that in mind, it is a rifle of it's time and shoots well in retrospect. In SPR the rifles don't look or sound like they are firing m1 ball ammo, probably shooting blanks or smaller charges for the sake of the movie. The scene of the BAR firing is a better depiction- how challenging shooting such a large caliber out of a 20rd magazine works, it's kinda spraying all over the place. You try shooting accurately with a 18 pound gun with your adrenaline pumping and the enemy killing all your men around you.
