American vs. Dutch tipping culture could not be more different. When I moved to the Netherlands, I really had to learn that tipping 20% was not the norm, and each time that I tipped less than that, I felt so awkward! That said, I'm still not quite sure what to do in certain places because Dutch people seem to have a range of opinions about when to tip and how much.

It is a courtesy indeed. Servers are paid a decent salary - by law there's an obligatory minimum. Here, Netherlands, prices are all-in and rounding up is a way to express satisfaction with the overall experience. Go to Italy and you may have to pay for the table, the cutlery/service separately. Or there you may have three price levels for a cup of coffee: standing at the bar, sitting at table indoors, sitting at table outdoors.

Lesson on tipping in the US tipping used to be considered offensive in the US just like it is in most of the world, and only became prominent during the great depression when employers actually couldn’t pay their place properly because they weren’t bringing enough money and then after the great depression was over the employers realized that they could pay their employees less by having them take tips not just that but I’ve talk to tons and tons of line, cooks, and people that make food and restaurants that ended up quitting making food because they realize the servers were making more than them even though the people making the food, working way harder than the people giving the food out but the end of the day as long as people keep tipping, employers will continue to pay their employees next to nothing even though the servers make a lot of money and yet still complain and for the food delivery people they’re literally doing a job that literally takes no skill to do and it’s one of the most easiest jobs on the planet yet farmers in the US take him on average around $23,000 a year, and they work way harder than a good majority of the people in this country

So, $15.22 / $2.13 ≈ 7.1 times more pay in the Netherlands.

The wages are better than they are in the US, considering the costs you also have to cover over there. We have a far better healthcare (coverage) for starters, and hardly have the (amount of) expenses you have monthly in the US. We can live comfortably at a €1.800 month's salary.
