Surprise? More like shock. It really is shocking. Quite horrific. No wonder America has the highest obesity rate. As Brit chic, I recommend to get the true authentic chip butty experience, cut up some fresh potatoes, cook them in a saucepan in oil til they get that golden crisp on the outside, sprinkle some salt on them, place on fresh thick cut bread and squeeze a lil ketchup! Game changer! Everyone’s taste is different but fried fresh thick cut chips and fresh bread are the best and what truly makes it a Brit fav! We grew up on this as kids when money was tight. We didn’t eat it all the time though, health first peeps 🩷

Squeezable butter has to be the most Alien thing I've ever seen, that's terrifying lol. A proper Chip butty is supposed to be deep fried potatoes that are still a touch greasy with a LOT of salt and vinegar slapped between two thick pieces of white bread, buttered with an optional red sauce (ketchup), chip shop curry sauce for dipping is even better. I've made a few chip buttys the way you did when i'm feeling super lazy and I would explain it as kinda like cardboard but I ain't gonna starve.

Brown Sauce is a spiced condiment commonly served with food here in the UK and is dark brown in colour. The taste is either tart or sweet with a spicy, peppery taste similar to that of Worcestershire sauce. Brown sauce is typically eaten with meals such as full breakfasts, bacon sandwiches and chips. The main UK brands are HP Sauce and Daddies Sauce.

Traditional British chips are homemade from peeled and cut potatoes,(Maris Piper potatoes). They are then deep fried in beef dripping, some people use the three fried method. The butter should be genuine salted butter, squeezable cannot be butter. When nicely brown the chips should be placed on the butty, lightly sprinkled with malt vinegar, (not none brewed condiment). Then a good sprinkle of salt, tomato sauce can be added lawfully, not barbecue, ranch, chilli, or the many other sauces you Americans seem to like. To do this would make it an American chip butty. Having said that my daughter suggested a blob of egg mayo, and I reluctantly had to admit loving it.

You can make your own chips for a chip butty too. Just get some nice potatoes, peel them, cut them into chunky chips, and pop them in some deep oil to fry them till golden. Sometimes if you pop the chips in water and pop them in the microwave for about 3? minutes before you fry them to blanche them, they come out nice and fluffy inside but crunchy outside. A little sprinkle of salt and vinegar is so good, but you can have without too. I usually like to have mine in a bap (bread roll) or a cheesy bap (bread roll with cheese baked into it) If you give it a moment for the butter to melt onto the chips it's so good. Also, "brown sauce" is a savoury sauce over here. One of the big brand names is HP sauce (I prefer the "Daddy's" brand myself) It's made with puréed fruit (apples, dates, etc) molasses, tomatoes, vinegar, tamarind, spices. It's sweet but tart with a peppery kick. A bit like Worcester sauce but a bit sweeter

If you're doing a chip butty, you need proper thick chips deep fried, not frozen seasoned ones. Proper butter, not squeeze crap and either salt and malt vinegar or tomato sauce and it must be white bread. Try it like that, it's amazing. Also in the uk fish & chip shops tend to use cod or haddock, but you can use pollock, or any meaty white fish.

Being an Englishman who lived in MS for over 2 years to get a more authentic chip butty you need to use sourdough bread, block butter, malt vinegar and table salt with tomato ketchup to taste. Thick cut potatoes to homefry size and deep fry until golden brown. You will tast the difference. The sprinkle of malt vinegar and salt on the chips are an important part of the taste ❤️👍😁

Here in Northern Ireland, we use a 'floury bap' (soft burger bap without seeds etc) & thick chunky chips... Theres no real way to describe 'brown sauce' - its sort of a spiced/seasoned weird bbq sauce ketchup mix thing... Even that doesn't really describe it & thetes nothing else u can use to substitute it either! 'Brown' gravy is a thing here but not alot of "chippys" in England sell it ... BUT i must say there's nowt like a 'gravy chip butty'! Thick chips (fluffy inside, crispy outside), with a fresh soft floury bap, well buttered & a load of brown gravy... (Set up being buttered bap base-hot chips-brown gravy-buttered bap top)... The melted butter & gravy mixes together lovely....but u gotta eat fast... its messy but absolutely yummy Mmmmm!! Also as for fish, it tends to be white seafish used for 'fish & chips' so likes of Cod, Whiting, Haddock, Pollock etc. In England, the descaled skin is left on the fillet, then its battered & deep fried... Here in N.I. the skin is removed... We wouldn't really batter & deep fry freshwater fish... Im not sure of what species u are able to get but u are looking for a flaky fish that 'holds together' well, so maybe some sort of Catfish... Internet says Catfish makes for a tasy Cod substitute...

You should also try a fish finger sandwich with mayonaise. Sooo good. Ooh & fried eggs in a sandwich too, nom nom nom... and crisps in a sandwich - butter the bread, tip on a packet of crisps & spread them evenly, put the top slice of bread on & then press down to crush all the crisps, and then try to eat it without all the crisps falling out, lol.

Something else we will order from the fish and chip shop, is cheese and chips, so a plate full of chips covered in grated cheddar cheese (not that American processed cheese) and what we call cheddar is yellow not orange as I have seen in many American videos, orange cheese is what we refer to as Red Leicester which has a slightly different texture and milder flavour. Another thing is chips and gravy (often served with sausage) but an interesting twist is chips covered in cheese covered in gravy. Many turn their nose up to that, as I did at first but it is great. One of the keys with cheese and chips is how it is served, in a container which fills with steam causing the cheese to melt by the time it is opened to eat.

I think a lot of us started eating chip butties/sandwiches because they were cheap and filling. As others have pointed out, our bread isn't as nearly as sweet as yours, so maybe that's why we'd have hot savoury stuff in it. It doesn't taste as "weird" to us. When I was growing up, in the 70s/80s, Saturdays was shopping day, the cupboards were practically empty, but we'd have potatoes, eggs and bread, so dinner in many houses was fried eggs and chips. It was quick and easy to cook before either draging your kids up to the supermarket, or leaving them with an older sibling. We'd often have slices of buttered bread on the table, to eat withnour dinner. So it was a natural thing for us kids to grab a slice of bread, and make a half sandwich stuffed with chips. I still eat them like that now, only for me, it's usually Heinz Mayo, rather than ketchup!

That has to be the most American version of a chip butty I've ever seen🤣 - squirty butter, frozen seasoned chips (and air fried ... just no, they don't taste like chips at all and they're too dry and crispy), honey mustard/chilli garlic dressing. At least you had (the American equivalent of) white bread. Get some potatoes (ideally Maris Piper), peel them and chip them up (nice big, fat chips). Don't season them first, just deep fry them in vegetable oil (or lard if you're going really olde traditional).

Use solid butter as cold as you can without the bread tearing - the combination of hot chips and cold butter melting on them is amazing. If you want to add cheese, chuck a handful of grated cheddar on the fries whilst still in the air fryer so it starts to melt, then build your chip butty with the cheesey chips. This is a british chip shop staple (though it is usually served on a soft white bread roll rather than white sliced, if you get it from the chip shop). Brown sauce... is NOT GRAVY... brown sauce is a vinegary, kinda sweet, fruity version of ketchup. (But its not BBQ).

Like, peel and slice up potatoes both ways and then deep fry them? Our fish is normally cod (in England) or Haddock (in Scotland), but as they're both salt-water species I guess you could make do with another form of white fish. You could probably make some batter to dip them in before deep-frying them too; I'm not sure of the proportions, but it'll just be a thick but runny mixture of flour, water and an egg, I should imagine...

(there's a 24 hour mariation process with banana blossom, sea salt, seaweed snacks, squeeze of lemon juice and a load of cold water) but they key is in the dredging in flour before battering and frying.
