Today we are trying Sunday roast at Toby Carvery for the first time. We weren't sure what to expect going to Toby Carvery, but overall we thought it was a pretty good meal for the price. For those of you who don't know much about it (like us before we went), Toby Carvery is a British chain of carvery-style restaurants, serving roast meats and traditional Sunday roast dinner accompaniments such as Yorkshire puddings, stuffing, gravy, and vegetables. At Toby Carvery, you can choose from four roasted meats and as many vegetables and accompaniments as you want from the buffet-style counters. Toby Carvery has built its brand around offering a "home of the roast" experience, aiming to serve traditional British roast dinners at affordable prices.
What are your thoughts on Toby Carvery? Worth the price of better to have a traditional Sunday roast somewhere else?

You hit the nail on the head, Toby will never beat a home made roast or even a good pub roast, but when you take into account the price, the amount of food you can get, the fact there's almost every possible side for you to pick and choose and how much easier it is than making one yourself, that's when Toby really shines.

I feel like they could be a little more generous with the meat, and just make the veg not all you can eat (so you can still pile ur plate once, but only once). Would be much better if they did that.

I don't mind the small meat portions I used to go there mostly for the potatoes, gravy, yorkshire pud, carrots, peas and parsnips on a discount day 1 day a week. Id pile it high and fill myself to exploding (I was dirt poor) for what was then £5. Haven't been to one in 15 years though, none local near me now.

Sunday roast every week. Bubble and squeak with a slice of meat on monday. Left overs with mash Tuesday. Meat stewed up with veg Wednesday. Soup Thursday. Fish and chips Friday. Maybe sausage and mash Saturday. Edit. This was the routine in the 1950's, not everyone could afford to waste food. My nan grew her own veg so the food budget was carefully managed. No freezer or refrigerator and tinned goods were a luxury. The Sunday roast was the main meal of the week with a big piece of Yorkshire pudding so that you didn't eat too much meat. We would have the rest of the pudding the next day, cold with marmalade on.

use a glass out the cupboard and fill it once with plain flour, once with eggs, and once with milk. whisk it all into a smooth batter with a pinch of salt. leave it to rest on the side for min.30 minutes, up to 2 hours until it's a bit aerated. preheat your deep muffin tray at 220C with a splash of oil in each well until it's really hot. whisk the batter again just before use and pour it into the hot oil and straight back into the oven, bake it for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. do NOT open the oven until they're ready! this method gets perfect monster yorkshire puddings every time!

American ex-pat here, i have lived in the UK for 8 years now and can help! I worked as a cook in a pub and you can make perfect roast potatoes without goose fat or beef drippings, its just a LOT of oil, and dry, par-cooked potatoes. a hot oven, an occasional toss, and the time to let them really crisp up. The stuffing here is VERY different than the Stove-top stuff, a bit drier, denser and often has sausage meat in it. Its amusing to see and hear Americans react to the food here, now that i have become very accustomed to it. I almost wish you had someone very British with you on these excursions to say the things we are all yelling at the screen that you can't hear!

I'm ~50 now and a Sunday roast was always a weekly thing when I was a child in the north east...my old mother still does them. We were pretty poor, so it wasn't an affluence thing...the left-overs would be used for a few days after (curry, bubble&squeek). The roast looked great for the price - here on the south coast you pay ~£20 for a take-away roast.

Toby is not the high end food some might like, but when you consider some families are on a budget and they can feed their family well for the price then Toby delivers well. If you are somewhere you don't know well and need food, well you know what to expect and that can also be helpful sometimes. Toby carvery is ironically really great for vegetarians. Not only do they have a really good vegetarian menu (they bring you the item and then you help yourself to veg from the carvery) but you can also opt for the meat-free carvery. They give you a square plate and you just have the macaroni cheese, a Yorkshire pudding, and all the vegetables. And as you spotted they have vegetarian gravy. It’s only about £6 so really good. That’s actually why there were two types of roast potatoes. One set were cooked in beef fat (and labelled to say this - those are probably the ones you thought were in a sauce) and the others are cooked in vegetable oil.

8:06 i did have a roast every sunday as a child, my mum would get the meat and potatoes in the oven on a timer and then take us off to church, upon return she would cook the veg and everything would be ready.... Gammon was my fav, the chicken or turkey could sometimes be dry, beef is a bit more chewy, but the Gammon was always a winner.

Sunday roast is a very old traditional dinner, every Sunday it was served with either Beef, chicken, lamb or pork. It has filtered out throughout the years but some families still get together and have this weekly, I did when living back there. As for Toby carvery, I absolutely love it 😍.

Toby Carvery roast dinners are great. Better than a lot of pub lunches I've had. I would recommend them to anyone. Loved the beef, it just melts in your mouth and the portion is very generous. The Yorkshire puddings there are great too. Would definitely like to pay 'Toby' more visits in the future. The staff were very nice. A great British lunch.

Just to add, a carvery is a type of restaurant where they give you the meat (they carve it, hence the name) and you pick out the rest yourself. Toby is one of the largest carvery chains in the uk but it’s not the only one and it’s not the nicest, but it’s cheep and cheerful. It’s called Toby because it’s named after “Toby jugs”, which are a type of decorative jug that are shaped and painted to look like a 17th century guy wearing a tricorn hat. You’ll see this image in the Restaurant logo.

I made the mistake of watching this when peckish! My soul sister best friend can make cauliflower cheese to die for, if I get an invite for a Sunday roast to hers, it's a no brainer! The cauliflower cheese is just off the charts! She takes great pleasure in our thanks when we just empty our plate of food made with love. I try and show gratitude by rolling up my sleeves and doing the washing up - not everyone has a dishwasher, and to me it's an honour to let her take the weight off her feet whilst the kitchen gets cleared. It's such a pleasure!

Sunday Roast is one of those things that the standard is set very high at home. McDonalds is the Toby equivalent of a proper BBQ. "Some" pubs will do a home equivalent, not many. In the UK your mums roast is by definition the best meal you'll ever have. There's a lot going on in a Sunday roast, it combines food with family and friends and makes everything taste delicious.

Toby's is when you're craving a piled plate of roast stuffs but can't be arsed making one yourself. But if you can find a half decent home cook willing to have you over for a roast, it'll be better.
