From a swedish guy (me) loving surströmming: - That can is way pass its ”best before date”. You can tell from the swelling of the can and from the fillets that has stopped beeing fillets a while ago (they have turned into something else). - It is supposed to be opened outdoors (yes, the first ”poof” of smell is not that good) - You eat it with thin swedish traditional bread, and red onion, chives, potatoes, dill and sour cream. Jesus.

And one of the two smelled so awful, servicing him would have been a degrading experience, so I opted out. Men in general don't clean well (for a number of social reasons), so having that extra skin there isn't a friend to someone whose not willing to stay fresh.

Samira Well many things can be disgusting if you eat it without anything else, take a spoon full of mustard in your mouth and it's not so good, but on a burger or whatever it's nice. Same thing here, you're not supposed to eat it just like that, you have to do it "right" with tons of red onion, potatoes, cream fraische, and swedish hard bread. If you do it that way it's actually quite good =)

Xlcola Yeah that makes sense I have read that the people in Sweden usually wash the fish, peel it and only use a tiny bit of it. But for example, rsacode and I think that mayonnaise is disgusting but I can still eat it on its own without having the feeling to throw up haha

i think anything creamy has to be added to something else - so adding spices and stuff to mayo to make a dipping sauce for salad - totally normal. Putting creamy frosting (has to have lemon or orange tangy-ness) on cake or a cinnamon roll is ok. But eating these things by themselves makes me feel queasy.

They don't actually smell it. It's fermented in the can which means the workers are working with perfectly edible fish. Airlines have actually banned it on flights because the pressurized can has been deemed an explosion hazard if the pressure drops too low. It also contributes to the tins being banned in schools since the pressurized air in the tin allows the smell to spread faster through the air, making them extremely effective stink bombs.

As he snapped back into reality he still had the fish in his mouth, the smell oozing from the can. he spit it out , rubbed his tears from his eyes ,he looked up with the taste still in his mouth. what he had just seen...was not a dream.....it was all his bad decisions. He looked down on the open can exposing the fish he had just tasted, he told himself "it is all in the past,its time to make myself a better man and change myself" he put his hands on the lid "lets close this chapter...together" and he closed the can....the smell stopped...he smiled. im weird.....

I grew up in the states but my mom was Norwegian/Swedish (mix of both). Visited family there every so often. One of the best foods I’ve ever had was Surströmming stew. They only put a little bit in but it was so flavourful I loved it. They have to open the tin outside though otherwise it smells for weeks.

Yes, THAT surströmming looks horrible because it is past it's expiration date or the can wasn't kept cool so the fish actually started decomposing... You can tell it's bad because the can is swelling too much and it's supposed to look like fish, not grey mush

In Sweden, most people eat it after the fermentation process os done (seasons surströmming, some months) and then it's more solid flesh and less "soup". But the connoisseurs save the tin for next year and then you get the results in the video. The smell is the same in both cases though.
