To the people saying, "They just stole the names of English cities!", it's because America was colonized by the British. The *British* named the cities.

I live in MA and I didn't realize these names were ridiculous until watching this. It's funny how we normalize our surroundings when we grow up. And NO we do not all have that accent that everyone loves to do. In fact, people from Mass whose families go way back to the pilgrims and puritans (like my grandma) have a weird sort of British-ey sound to their voices...

They're all English town names, that I'm very familiar with. All except Cochituate, I guess that's Native American? It's interesting to see that modern Massachusetts people (Massachuttians? Massachuttese? The Mass-o-Chusetts???) still pronounce nearly all of them the same way we do. Though Leominster is even more basic in England: "Lem-ster". Anyway, nice to see one corner of the U.S. with sensible names; you can keep your Omahahas and your Albukweekways ;-)

+Brit Boy Gaming that's not true at all ...it depends on what state you live in. In Massachusetts the letter "R" on the end of a word is not pronounced at all........car is cah, brother is brotha etc. Listen to some speeches on youtube of president John F. Kennedy (a hard core upper crust Massachusetts accent). Like everything else in the USA it all depends on what state you live in. "Everything" in the USA depends on what state you live in from gun laws to accents

I am curious as to why there are so many British people commenting that they didn't know about New England. Is your history of colonialism not apart of your studies?
@tomoram1149
@tomoram1149 9 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not but we have more important things to leant about from the past. Like how out country Was made. Not how one of the many many colonies was made and what happened through its very short life up to now.

Well I did learn a bit about it at school, I guess some people do and some people don't. Regardless, it's pretty embarrassing that some of my fellow Brits don't realise we're the reason White America exists.

slideshowgurl The British education system doesn't actually focus a lot on British history. Although we have history lessons they are world history for example the units I did for my a-level history course were on the Cold War, WW1, Russian history and America Boom, Bust and Recovery which was basically an overview of American society before, during and after the Wall Street Crash. I think this is something the government is now changing.

˝Either pronounce them the way they're written,or write them differently.˝ Well said,except English is the best example of doing that wrong.You don't pronounce it the way it's written. Why don't you pronounce the K in knight ? If you were to pronounce the word like it's written you would sound like a German.Let me tell you how you would say knight if you were to pronounce it the way it's written : K as in king,N as is never,I as in interest,G as great,H as in hotel,T as in tea.And you would pronounce each letter,except you don't do that. Hipocrisy much.You're just used to your language,but it's a really messed up language,with so many inconsistencies in pronounciations that you just have to know by heart.Even more so than in other Germanic languages. If you want to learn a language that truly pronounces words the way they're written,learn Croatian.For the most part we have a standard latin alphabet with standard vowels (a,e,i,o,u) except we pronounce them the way you're supposed to in a latin alphabet.If we write a letter,we read it,the way we read it in alphabet,no shenanigans in our pronounciation.So for you English people,you're not the one to talk.

Purple Cow Phillip Once upon a time, English did pronounce the K in knight and in knife and in knowledge and in every other word that starts with a KN. Then someone important with an accent stopped pronouncing it and it caught on. In general, English is inconsistent because it is a blend of Germanic and Romantic languages, which are very different. English was originally spoken by the Germanic poor and when the rich Romantic-speaking people came in to England, the poor Anglos were forced to speak both and it eventually transformed into its own language. Also, English just takes on new words as they are invented in other languages. Some languages, like French, have a committee that invents new French versions of words when new words are invented in other languages. English just uses the new word as is but many times English-speakers cannot pronounce it right. So the English alphabet has cases where it is pronounced like almost every other language. That, in a nutshell, is why English is so inconsistent.

Heidi Ah Sue Yeah i've been actually reading up on that several years ago,when i started learning english i realised some words sound germanic,some a bit french and so on,and i've basically learnt what you've said. But to me it's fascinating that a lot of English speakers don't realise any of this

'dela whatever Well,Spanish being a romance language,more or less they pronounce it the way it's written.Some of their sounds are written differently than in other romance languages,and other languages that use latin alphabet,but in my experience that's how i've seen Spanish to be. To be fair i know next to nothing when it comes to Spanish,only what i've heard in those (TV soap operas ?) ,if that's what they're called.
