Welsh cakes are just a flat scone cooked on a griddle, homemade and still warm they literally melt in the mouth, but we do always eat them with butter, lots of butter! When I was a kid my Mum would make they alongside 'Drop Scones' (which are nothing like Scones!) which is what we call Scotch Pancakes which are very similar to your American breakfast pancakes, but Drop Scones are small like Welsh Cakes and again eaten with butter, we basically eat everything with butter in Wales, you should try and get hold of some Bara Brith too which is a fruit cake/bread which again we eat spread with butter, if you liked shop bought Welsh cakes you'll absolutely LOVE homemade ones, and they're super quick and easy to make.

The Welsh Cakes are rather like The Chorley Cakes, (which are only made in Chorley, Lancashire), and the Eccles Cakes, (which are only made in Eccles, which was formerly part of Lancashire, but is now a suburb of Greater Manchester), Welsh Cakes:- Welsh cakes are made from flour, butter or lard, currants, eggs, milk, and spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. They are roughly circular, a few inches (7-8 cm) in diameter and about half an inch (1-1.5 cm) thick. Chorley Cakes:- A Chorley cake is made using currants, sandwiched between two layers of unsweetened shortcrust pastry. The Chorley cake is significantly less sweet than Eccles cake, and is commonly eaten with a light spread of butter on top, and sometimes a slice of Lancashire cheese on the side. Eccles Cakes:- If you've never heard of them, Eccles Cakes are small, round cakes made from flaky pastry that is filled with dried currants, candied lemon, orange zest, sugar and spices that commonly include cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves. If you want to go a level up for an Eccles cake, you would be eating a Mince Pie 🇬🇧😎👍🏼

I love hearing people use the Welsh language! The easiest thing to do would be to learn our alphabet (because yes, although the letters look the same as English, our alphabet is different). Welsh is all pronounced phonetically, so if you learn the way the letters sound, it will be easier to form the words. You should look up the history of the Welsh language and why it's not so widely spoken anymore. In particular, look up the "Welsh not". The English attempted to literally beat the language out of children, and there is a huge push right now in Wales to bring it back to what it was.

Very enjoyable video, I sent a link of this video to Cathryn Cariad chocolates saying how much you liked them! 'Cariad' means 'Darling' , "Carry-add". Congratulations to Lindsay for being able to say 'Wales' properly! Funny that as she seems to have the same accent as you Steve! I am a beer drinker too, but a few years ago, my kids bought me a bottle of Penderyn whisky (no 'e') It was the very best whisky I have ever tasted, and in fact the ONLY whisky I have really enjoyed! I thought maybe it was a Welsh bias, but I can't find it here in Canada any more, and another Welsh whisky I found was nowhere near as nice! Welsh is very surprisingly easy language to pronounce as it is almost totally phonetic. But you do have to learn how to say 'LL' and 'CH' properly, no English equivalents. Also to slightly trill the 'R's . and to put the emphasis on the second to last syllable. So 'Penderyn' is said 'pen-DER-in' !

That particular brand of Welshcakes (or Pics as they're known to some locally) are a really good commercial brand, one of the closest you can get to "homemade" unless you get them freshly made in a shop or bakery. Welsh is a very difficult language for non speakers to learn, some of the sounds used in the language are not really used in in many other languages, take the double L, you produce that sound by resting the tip of your tongue against the back of your top two front teeth and expelling air out the sides of your tongue to make a sound similar to an S with a wet lisp. I grew up bilingual (Welsh and English) which as a child was quite rare in Wales with only 5% of the country being able to speak Welsh at the time (there was a time when the Welsh language was outright banned in Wales until Henry the 8th decided it was a stupid law and changed it). and Cymru (Wales) is pronounced CUM-REE.
@docksider Жыл бұрын
Have a go at making them - very easy to do, there is a recipe in the book I sent, if you don't want to use lard (and I don't use lard) use all margarine or all butter. Instead of a traditional bakestone you can use a heavy frying pan. A drop of oil on the pan wiped off with kitchen paper is all you need....

Welsh cakes are literally called cakes of the bakestone. Nearly every welsh household has a steel bakestone that is used on the stove top ( many were homemade by husbands in the steelworks or mines, sa it is made of steel about 1/2" thick and about 13" round. The mix is rolled and cooked on a buttered bakestone for about 3 minutes per side. You actually know when to flip them because the top texture changes ( much like a pankake) hence the story of King Alfred burning the cakes.

we don't need to make Smores in the UK, as we just buy Tunnocks Tea Cakes. which is a biscuit base with fluffy marshmallow on top, covered in chocolate. you can melt the dark chocolate down in a pan and add milk to make a real hot chocolate drink or wait for it to cool for a shake. the Whisky in the chocolate would not get you drunk, as the alcohol evaporates when cooking. that way you just left with the flavour/taste of it. you cant really compare the handmade chocolates with anything else, as they are unique compared to anything branded.

The Bitter taste of the Hershey’s Cadbury’s bar is because of a process called “Lipolysis”, where they sour the milk before mixing it with the sugar & cocoa crumb mix, By souring the milk, it releases the Butyric Acid that gives it a longer shelf life, but it also gives it a Tangy Vomit taste, However Hershey’s state that they add sugar to the milk before condensing it to remove more moisture from the milk, This is meant to give it a thicker texture when the milk, sugar & chocolate is mixed together, Hershey’s is also believed to use a process called “Dutching”, this is adding an alkali to the cocoa beans, which would also give it the sour tangy taste, But the Crumb of Hershey’s Cadbury’s Chocolate is imported from Ireland, so it is a different crumb to their own original Hershey’s chocolate, All they do is add the Sour Milk to the crumb to produce the Hershey’s Cadbury’s chocolate, But for the original Cadbury’s chocolate, you can’t beat the original chocolates that you can try whilst touring around Cadbury’s World (Theme Park), in Bournville near Birmingham, 🇬🇧😎👍🏼

Hello Steve & Lyndsey. Don’t worry about pronouncing Welsh words correctly. As I said before, my husband is Welsh and he often has to correct me on pronunciation! Lol😅 You can’t get it wrong when you are learning! Well done 👍🏻 Welsh cakes are great with a cup of tea for sure. Keep them for yourself Lyndsey, with a cuppa 😊 If you choose to go to Cardiff you would enjoy St Fagans National museum of History. It’s open air and fascinating. Earwax LOL! Hilarious 🤣 I think this type of dark chocolate would be great in cooking? Maybe? It’s very strong. I think you will both be spoilt and changed forever towards chocolate after this tasting. Your standards have been raised! 😅 The whisky chocolate is made for taste not alcoholic content. Great video guys! Love the giggles. Thanks 🙏🏻

I live in St Fagans and agree it's a lovely museum to visit, I'd also happily treat Steve and Lindsay to a lovely leg of lamb with mint sauce should they come visit 😋

Elderflower is also used in drinks, either concentrate where you add water or sparkling as in carbonated form) as well as confectionary such as chocolates, cakes, biscuits over here. I used to know of someone who made their own elderflower drink and it was really good.

Welsh cakes are very easy to make and are cooked in a skillet or cast bake stone. We don't cook them in the oven. The recipe is easy and I'm usually on the mixing duty... Just leave them to cool to finish off cooking when they are brown... Still warm.. gimme 🤤

Stick with stroopwafels and boterkoek. Welsh cakes are made in a frying pan and not in an oven btw. They’re too crumbly for me. Doei 😊

As a Welsh person living in London, welshcakes are hard to find here so I'm surprised you were able to get them there! Tan Y Castell is the biggest commercial Welsh bakery brand, the only one I have seen outside of Wales for sure. Every time I go back to Wales I buy a few packs of welshcakes since they are surprisingly hard to order online! They are traditionally cooked on a flat cast iron griddle and fresh off one they are even better!

My mum made Welsh cakes on a griddle a huge flat metal plate that you put on your gas or electric hob you then drop the mixture onto it and cook it uil quite dark then flip it and yes eat them warm with butter these were made with lard originally as that was cheaper than margarine or butter these were made very cheaply with just a few currants as a treat xx

Welsh cakes are really easy and delicious to make at home, really good project to do with children if you wanted to do with sofia: its like a really easy dough that you roll out, cut out, and cook on a griddle / dry frying pan

If you make it to Wales apart from the Welsh cakes, there are a lot of great things to see and do. In North Wales if you're interested, there are 5 narrow gauge steam railways with victorian steam engines and carriages steaming up into the hills. The best sight is Port Merrion near Portmadoc (where 2 of the railways start). It's a small Italian style town built by Clough Williams Ellis (a local architect) and it's absolutely astounding to see it on the North Wales coast. There are a lot of youtube sets of both.

We would usually have a Welsh cake with tea or milk. When K was young, my Welsh Gran would make me a bag of Welsh cakes to take home.

I saw the whiskey chocolate in the thumbnaila nd I called it. I KNEW it'd be the Penderyn It's pretty famous since it's made locally.... and yeah home made welsh cakes are the best. My local bakery has their own recipe (they make their own pies, pasties and sausage rolls. It's comfort food at it's finest, not the best for you but it's been there at least 50 years and going strong) and it's the next best thing to home made ones. They're slightly less dense than the more mass-produced ones, and they are a little more spiced and amazing.

The box of chocolate has a Great Taste sticker on the lid, i think. Great Taste is organised by the Guild of Fine Food. The sticker can also have stars, the more the better the product.

The Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt bar also has a Great Taste Award 2 stars label on. All depends if you like dark chocolate i suppose. Me, i hate it lol. Wickedly Welsh have quite a few Great Taste award bars, my favourite was the milk chocolate Cream Liqueur bar which was made with Merlyns Cream Liqueur (also a Penderyn whisky). It was the scrummiest bar ever but they don’t make it any more 😕 .
