I wouldn't say his octave jumps are showing off as much as they are a mixture of artistic choice, desire to make something truly unique, and giving his fans what they want. Everyone who is a follower of Geoff knows that he has an absurd range (and is quite good through all of it), but ultimately his fans love him for his first and second octave range.

I can sing this right along with him except for the lowest notes he hits, and it doesn’t seem to me as if it’s particularly difficult. But your explanation of “showing off” as demonstrating what he can do rather than bragging is good. Or as my high school Spanish teacher liked to say, “It’s not bragging if you can do it.”

Honestly. He made this cover feel so much more emotional that you could almost feel the Sadness of Jack. Check out his cover of Aint No Sunshine if you havent yet. He makes it so incredibly emotional. Yeah the song is about abusive lovers, but the way he does it, it makes sound like a sad love song.

Welcome to Geoff's rabbit hole. 🙂 He has a couple videos in his channel in which he speaks about the techniques he uses, I remember the first one is called "How to sing REALLY low". Very interesting, it shows the time and dedication and effort it takes to get to be this good. 🙂 His channel is a mine of stunning songs... And not only Halloween stuff. He's done a couple from "The Hobbit" trilogy, for example: "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" and "I see fire". But he did as well things like "Man of constant sorrow" and "Shenandoah", or miners song like "16 tons" and "Big Bad John", funny Elvis covers like "Way down" and a beautiful version of "Ain't no sunshine", a touching version of "High and Dry" and classics like "Sound of silence" and "The house of the Rising Sun", and many more. He started his channel during the pandemic, and still releases one video every month or so. He also sings bass in an a cappella group called "Voiceplay", one of the oldest a cappella groups out there (they started in 1997 under the name of "4:2:5", and Geoff was one of the founding members. They are the Kings of Halloween, but they cover pretty much all genres. I think you'd love them 🙂. See you next time!

A comment on the "abrupt switches" that Geoff was doing from higher to lower registers: remember that Geoff is lip-synching to his studio recording of the song, and so while I have no doubt he could do that kind of switch in real time if he wanted to, there's no telling how much time actually passed between him singing the two phrases. Geoff often puts out KZbin shorts of segments of songs that he's done, just him in front of a piano singing without any processing at all, to show that he can indeed perform these songs without any "technical" help, but I haven't seen one of this song yet, and don't know if he's planning on doing one - but it's something to watch out for, JIC! I understand your 'take' on him showing off. I thought the same thing when I first started listening to Geoff and to the group he's in... Voice Play. I have come to believe that it's a part of his artistic expression. Plus, the fans of his solo and group work have come to expect that his range gets "shown off." Geoff actually has a couple videos about singing super low notes. He (and other super low bass singers) have to TRAIN and practice that kind of vocal technique. It isn't natural. PLEASE check out more Geoff AND Voice Play... even if you try a song or two first before "officially" reacting to some of their stuff. Great reaction, young lady! I'll be waiting for more!

Geoff is incredible. He doesn't show off all his talent at once, so you have to check out more of his work. For 'spooky season', I'd suggest you check out his "Monster Mash" or "Ghost Riders", or "Headless Horseman". He's also the bass singer for an acapella group called VoicePlay, and they have a ton of Halloween content that will stun you.

You are going to have so much fun! You'll find that Geoff's choices often surprise - he does extensive research prior to arranging to be sure that his idea, his version, hasn't been done yet. He always honors the original, but changes it to meet his own artistic ideas. Often the surprise, and the unexpected beauty of his vocal choices, is what is most exciting in his performances.

Really enjoyed your reaction. He pre-records the vocals and accompaniement. If there is a piano, he is playing it, other instrumentation, he arranges it but plays it on program that converts the keyboard to any instrument. He can do those jumps and slides live, he's recorded several shorts showing just that. He has only been doing solo work since Covid shut the world down. He is the bass with Voiceplay, a wonderfully talented acapella group. Voiceplay just did Hellfire from Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. Subscribed in anticipation of more Geoff and Voiceplay!

Very nice reaction. He can be a bit of a shock to people because he does have that ability to go back-and-forth between octaves. And thank you for going all the way to the patron roll. He and the group he is in, VoicePlay , frequently will add little tidbits after the performance. Generally he likes to thank the folks and sometimes will show a bit of the behind-the-scenes as he did here. The group he is in, Voiceplay, is also known to add little Easter eggs after the performances “finished”. Because they are an a cappella group, they have started playing the karaoke track during the patron roll which is often a treat all on its own. I went back to watch the original after I watched this the first time. Danny Elfman goes as deep as I believe he probably can. And about the time that Geoff stands up he goes into that more tenor range. Obviously Danny Elfman doesn’t have his range, most people don’t. But if you have the range why wouldn’t you use it? He has five octaves at his disposal and frequently uses three and sometimes four of them. He’s done three octave slides before, but in this one he simply flipped from the higher register to the lower notes. If you check his channel, he does have some tutorials on how he does achieve some of those really rumbly low notes. (Oh, and if you check the credits, you’ll see that this was pretty much entirely he and his wife Kathy with help with the make up and a little bit of the filming. You’ll find it’s the same with Voiceplay. They are self produced and get help with filming it (unless they’re using stationary cameras) and elaborate make up and costuming. The rest of it all them which is pretty freaking amazing.)

Geoff has a C5 CHEST to F0 recorded super base range, and treats every note as if its the same register… its crazy, its awesome, he just sings what he thinks sounds best, meanwhile the rest of us are doing the confused Jackie Chan face trying to figure out what in the world he is doing and how.

It's probably my favourite of Geoff's Hallowe'en releases, though they are all well worth experiencing _(Ghost_ _Riders_ _in_ _the_ _Sky_ is probably second, I have a great deal of nostalgia for that song). He only started doing these solo song releases during lockdown; more often you get to see multiple Geoffs in the videos, and now the Geoffettes have individual names! Hopefully _Oogie_ _Boogie's_ _Song_ with VoicePlay next, though...

4:16 - the reverb, while also added in post, is, or at least it seems to me that way, what you get when you sing a subharmonic note into a mic with a compressor (aka the one thing that makes most ultra low basses audible when singing live). Geoff can reach VERY low with his normal voice but to reach the extra extra low notes, like the one on the "know", he uses a technique called "subharmonics", which works by essentially generating two different frequencies by your vocal folds that mix and mingle into a much lower note, making Geoff sound like an elder Dragon or something. You can always hear it because subs never sound like normal notes and you can't get a truly smooth subharmonic due to the nature of the sound. Whenever you hear that rattling, you knwo it's a sub. (Or if it's a goddamn B0, not done here but Geoff has done it in the past).

4:30 Although as much as I have full confidence that Geoff can do the highs and lows transition seamlessly, this one sounds like two different recording takes. Again I know Geoff can do it incredibly well, but considering the contrast and rich resonants he wanted to achieve, it makes complete sense to do two separate takes but one continuous breath.

He does undeniable have an amazing control of his view but the part where he changes the deepness of his voice very quickly I'm pretty sure this was recorded in parts and then pieced together with editing... the camera slightly changed angle right at that moment. Another guy that has a crazy control of his voice that makes you wonder if it's the same person is the spine from steam powered giraffe, look at his cover of diamonds and some of his other songs that he sings alone.

I really don't like the movie but I do like what Geoff and VoicePlay do with the songs from it. (Geoff is the bass in the a capella group VoicePlay) This is Geoff's favourtie time of year, He loves all things Halloween. And he has a five octaverange, so little of it is apparent in this, though the way he's switching between octaves is remarkable. He doesn't normally do that, I think he does it here to sound more spooky. Diving into the subterrranean depths though is a way of showing off his bass range. And he known his fans love it. And of course he went high for the scream , no one screams in a low voice. :) But Geoff does often surprise us.

What's the opposite of a lament? Hmm, maybe an ode? An ode is a song or poem about something contemplative or serious but not necessarily happy, so not quite. A lament is a song or poem about regrets or sorrow and can mean the same thing as 'dirge'. I don't know if English has an exact antonym

He definitely shows off, but from what I’ve seen it’s good-natured showing off. The sort where he knows he can do cool things with his voice and he’s not afraid to show it, but he’s also not going to put himself on a pedestal in the process.

@AmericansLearn More in depth explanation, Geoff records all the parts in chunks and layers it on the video (this is lip syncing like all music videos) and for some of those deep notes they actually come across super quiet so he repeats singing the notes multiple times then layers the tracks on top of themselves to add more depth and what you would hear as Reverb (it's actually what's called a sub-harmonic note) this is the rabbit hole his voice made me delve down 😅 also glad to see a fellow chi town native making videos, love em

@@yeetusxmaximus I’ve been to a VoicePlay concert. They were not lip syncing. Geoff is as impressive live as he is on video; I still don’t know how the speakers survived that show. He hit notes that vibrated my entire rib cage. That’s not hyperbole, I mean I felt my ribs shake. Most bizarre sensation ever. It’s obvious when he layers himself in post - like the part about screaming where you hear three different notes. But beyond that, I don’t hear anything here vocally that I didn’t hear live at that concert. I get why you think differently- Geoff is very unique. I’d probably think the same if I hadn’t heard him live. He’s got hella range and hella power and is just mesmerizing IMO.

I think that last bit in Oogie Boogie could be more of a flaunt. He starts way up there and goes down octaves faster than 7 year old goes down stairs christmass morning. He goes down so far even the KZbin sutbtitles aknowledge it.
