We just lost our Rotty/Chow-Chow mix after 10.5 years. Damn cancer! He was true to the Chow-Chow nature of things by being the most stubborn, hard-headed dog I've ever seen. He was also the laziest dog I've ever seen. However, I guess the Rotty part kicked in, as he was super easy to socialize. He loved everyone that came over to the house or the yard...if invited (uninvited was a different story) to come in by a family member...then you were a lifelong friend. He loved kids as well. Actually, he was the gentlest dog I've ever seen as well. RIP, Duke.

I’ve had 4 chows. Definitely not a good breed for first-time dog owners but my first dog was a chow because he was being given away by his first owners. But if you’re willing to put in the time to understand the breed and socialize them, it’s fine to get a chow even if you’ve never had one before.

Do they get sick often?? Can these be kept in tropical climates?
@csong9940
@csong9940 9 ай бұрын
@@unusualplants2162 I don’t think they get sick often but it would obviously depend on the individual dog. And “often” is subjective as well. They cannot live in tropical climates unless you are willing and able to keep them indoors with air conditioning on. Chows overheat easily with all that fur and shaving them is bad for their coat.

Thank you for the great and honest video. I used to have a chow, who was very well trained. It was a difficult, but rewarding work. She was a stubborn, but a very well behaved dog. She indeed was not interested in playing with kids, who were fascinated with bear fluffy looks. She didn't show aggression towards strangers, but also didn't follow any on the steer and didn't try to jump on guests and play with them. And this is actually why I appreciated her character. This was a dog, who didn't make mess and stupid things. Now we are choosing a new puppy, and I are thinking about petting a poodle as a family dog, but when I see their jumping nature, how nervous they are and that they cannot stay alone, that drives me crazy. I miss my elegant and self-confident chow chow.

I have a 2 years old Chow Chow, Jin. You just nailed every aspect of his personality and our relationship. He’s so independent and requires you to be alert around other (male) dogs. On the other hand Jin is just wonderful with people and kids. I think that having my nieces playing with him since he was a puppy has been key to this. I would just add that I don’t think this is not a good breed for cities. Jin really enjoys 1hr-2hr walks and the more countryside I can take him too the more he enjoys. I couldn’t love him more.

I had male and female siblings. When it came to people and dogs polar opposites...she was wary of people but friendly to dogs, he was friendly with people but want to assert dominance on dogs his size or larger, dominance on smaller dogs was a given. The biggest issue I had with them was the occasional wars...although he was dominate with others she was the Alpha...or as I like to describe it an Alpa's Alpha. Not only was she Alpha she was a berzerker once triggered she wouldn't shutdown...easily. I would often have to hold them apart to 10-15mins otherwise she would force another fight. Given her nature of high-level of Alpha she occasionally would challenge me and I would have to impose my will reinforcing my dominance over her. She was not the dog for a first time chow owner.

My chow retriever Little Bear was strictly a one person no animal dog. She adored me and was quick to listen to me, like how she house trained in one evening, although if I went outside she would grab my ankle and try to drag me back into the house. Bear was my soul sister and lived 16 years. I miss her.

My chow chow was a fluffy pillow of hatred, vengance and a hint of bitterness with stranger people and dogs, at home a tolerant angel, as a gardian ....well... People could emptyes owr home if home alone, but if only one on house to defend, he was literally a killing machine, once i was home only with him i was 11yrs, some one get in the patio and i was sleeping , well the "visitor" was startled and ran fornhis life and close the door as fast as he could and my dog crashed on the door trying to take it down and a screeam of terror was heard😂😂😂 was epic and scary . We dont know how this person opened that door. Also hired a nanny (when tis was not a thing yet in mexico)for him when on vacations, he knew the people was there to clean and feed so he let them alone, never tryed to bite or anything, he lived 15 years cancer took him😢😢. My first best friend was a beautiful red coated, blue ribbon, show Chow. His name was Indiana Red Band. I called him Indi. ❤️ He was born on my bday and we were the same age. He was given to me by my aunt when I was 9 years old and he died from a brain tumor when we were 13. 😞 He loved me but he definitely hated my younger brother and did actually bite him several times. He didn’t like strangers or children though he tolerated them fairly well. My whole family always had chows and so they have a special place in my heart. So unique!

As a chow owner this is an informative video that is quite true to their character, except the grooming advice, that’s so wrong in so many levels! Never shave your chow, that will destroy their coasts for ever and cause all kind of coat problems, and never use a ferminator!! Proper grooming tips were given by Tom David on his podcast with a professional groomer. She will go into the various coat types and why this kind of grooming mr. Chow is receiving is awful! However, I hate to tell it to you and the owner, but this is not a pure bred chow. It’s most visible in the eye colour. No chow had blue eyes, but in all cases are the eyes dark. Moreover, the tail should be high set, carried well over the back. The tail of mr chow is way to flowy. My conclusion is that this is a chow mix, with probably husky back in his lineage. I hope your breeder mentioned this, and didn’t sell him as a pure bred, because then you were taken for a ride…
@carolhudson1732
@carolhudson1732 Жыл бұрын
Yes, totally agree on the grooming & parentage as husky x Chow He doesn't appear to be purebred. His tongue isn't that typical dark purple color either. I've never heard of a Chow with blue eyes. He has a tail set more like a husky / Collie Also he moves more like a husky. A typical Chow has a very distinctive gate unlike most dogs.

Owned Dobermans for 30 years. Adopted a 2mo Chow/Pit mix (DNA profiled 40/40) after fostering her. We couldn’t let her go b/c she is so sweet and affectionate. She’s about 5mo now and is a 180 from my Dobies but they play great together and also other dogs /people that have been playing with our Dobie. We train her everyday and she learns a lot from our 4yo female Dobie. Learning about her Chow traits as a WIP.

Absolutely right description! I grew up with Chows. My Chow I owe now is the first of them which I socialized properly and I train a lot with. One of our former chows (I hadn’t any knowledge about dogs) was a literal killing machine ! She killed all neighbor cats, ducks, one time a pregnant sheep, she even tried attacking horses. One underestimate this dog cause of its Teddy Look. With my current chow I train every day since years, but still the recall is not on point. She stubborn as hell and how u said , neither toy drive (at all, even as baby) nor strong food drive! The intensity of training with my chow - if I would train a Doberman Pinscher or German shepherd equally like my Chow- believe me, they would be incredible well behaved and on point. I believe that with a chow you can train as much as you want - it will never be same level as a Sheperd/Doberman/terrier etc … that’s just the nature of that breed !

Just one thing. My 4 year old son is getting along with my 1.5 year old chow chow. They play together, never had any issues. My chow chow sees my son as the alpha. This breed is great with children IF AND ONLY IF SOCIALIZED to different types of situations. If we take her to the mall/park to meet other dogs, whenever we feel like she's testing other dogs, we always let her know that she's not the alpha, we (humans) are. Then they submit, then they'll be good dogs for the rest of the day. Just be sure to let them know that YOU are in charge.
@chancevail8868
@chancevail8868 Жыл бұрын
Alpha dogs is a myth. The dogs at the top of the pack are the breeding animals, the mother and father. And dogs don't compete for a "alpha" position via any bouts of any sort. At around 9 months in the wild the wolf will leave its pack and seek out a mate with another wolf that left its pack and start a family, thus making them the leader of their own pack. David mech, scientist, and wolf researcher, the guy who came up with the alpha wolf theory , later in 1999 came out to say that he was wrong about alpha wolves, and that the leaders of the pack are the parents.

Start them off with luring. Teach them to follow your hand and reward them for it. Luring can turn into a heel position, sit, down, stand, between the legs, spin, left, right. Probably the most important first thing to teach a dog. And make him work for his kibble. Train him with his kibble from the day you get it. And feed him at the same time everyday. Also don't start adding a verbal command to a behavior until the behavior you want them to do on command is perfect. For example don't add the word sit, until your dog can listen to the hand signs perfectly without confusion. Then when you're teaching them the verbal you want to say the verbal, let it wait a second, then guide then down with your hands, and you want lots and lots of Repetitions with anything you train them in. It takes 600-1000 Repetitions for a dog to master a trick. Also touch your dog allot, everywhere, its important they get desensitized to touch at a early age. And let lots of people touch him. Socializing and desensitization is a big part of getting a obident dog. My husky is 9 months old and he can off leash heel, and listens to my commands while we're walking.

I grew up with a Chow Chow back in late 70's - 80's. We inherited a young adult male that had no formal training or socialization. Despite his lack of training in obedience he was naturally well behaved. He never countered surfed / raided the trash, barked for no reason, never jumped up or chewed on anything. He was a great easy going dog to live with in that respect I tried to train him obedience as best as I could for inexperienced 6-7yr old. He learned fairly quick simple commands; sit, down, recall & a few tricks such as; roll over & paw. But every was really on his terms when it came to recall, stay & loose leash walking. If you had something he really wanted at the time he would do it but if something else was more exciting he became deaf. LOL Chows are extremely loyal dogs often bonding to one person deeply for life. Ours was no exception & he never forgot his first owner. If he had the chance he would escape & run to find his old owner. This happened 3 times over the 14 years we owned him. It didn't matter if the owner moved to 3 towns away he found him. It was really amazing his devotion I am a complete animal lover. When I first met our Chow I thought he was a walking teddy bear. I must of been a complete shock to him as this little toddler clinging on to him & hugging him. He never showed any aggression towards me. He was instead always looking out for me & following me around. He slept by me & I normally was leaned up against him. He wasn't affectionate like a Golden Retriever but in his own reserved way showed his loved. He never rolled his tolerance to me over to other children. Not even within our family. Visitors especially he had no tolerance for a child touching him while eating or napping. He bite most of my family members for this reason. If you left him alone while eating or didn't bother him while sleeping he was fine with visitors. He basically would just ignore them. While being very territorial & protective he didn't bark needlessly. He didn't bother barking at normal every day non threats such as; mail man or neighbors walking by Chows can become very possessive of food & toys. This should be worked with while still young. Also they are very territorial & anywhere they are currently stand is considered their territory. I learned so much about dog's from him. He really was a great dog & I still admire his devotion

My boy was around 70% Staffie, 20% Chow, 10% other and 100% my ride or die. He was friendly to friendly people, ready to throw down if required, never wanted to be away from me, but could only cuddle for a couple minutes. Kids loved to see the blue/black spots on his tongue while saying, "he looks just like Scooby". We had nearly a 10 year run together. RIP, Brother.

I have had Chow Chows for 37 years and my daughter also had a pair . They are the most beautiful ,loyal dogs you could find . They do need to be trained well and they need to be treated as a family members with much respect. The one thing I would recommend against is getting a half breed. You are asking for trouble. Make sure the line is pure or they can turn vicious even with proper training. My Chows have lived with Himalayan cats and cockatoos over the years with no problems. They all live with us in the house together as one big happy family.. Get good grooming equipment and brushes and that makes it easy to take care of them and doesn't take very long. I use harnesses and a lead rather than a collar and a lead as it gives you better control and also doesn't mess up their fur as badly.

I have a Chow Mal. He is a wonderful dog who seems to think he is a police dog and my body guard. Yes! He is a lot of dog! He is 1 now and after lots of hard work he is perfect in a Chow way. He is always defending the castle from strangers which is great but sometimes it can be tough to calm him down. I have also had trainers ask me if I knew what I was doing when I got this dog. He used to be aggressive with dogs and strangers. I had to take him to a huge dog park/beach every week for a year so he could get used to meeting other dogs with time he has slowly gotten better with strangers or dog owners too. Now I can take him to smaller dog parks but if a dog don't respect his space they will know. As they say it's all about socializing. We also have two tiny dogs lesss than 10 pounds and I think that makes him enjoy being with the pack. I love my Chow Mal! Chows will always protect you and are most loyal dogs I have ever had. If anything or anyone seems to threaten me my Chow Mal will do anything to stop them by cornering them or getting between us without actually biting but growling and barking loudly.

Do not hurt him in any way. Unintentional or not. Chows will remember it. A doctor took my dogs temperature in his bottom. My chow never let me touch his bottom again. Same with his nails. My wife cut too deep. Now he won't give us his paws. Socialize him at a very young age and often. Don't worry about keeping them away from germs. It's rare. Let every person in the family handle them at a young age. Try to not let him get attached to one person.

I grew up with chow chows and border collies. From childhood to adult I have had 5 chows. Early chows did not have “training” they were house pets and one dog at a time. They were terrific - never bit anyone, loyal to family and loved car rides. As an adult my chows were farm dogs with in a group of other dogs - small fluffiest to an English mastiff. Again all great dogs - never vicious - great with my babies and toddlers. Interestingly, we are in Australia, and one of my chows had entropians - our vet had done his eye surgery training in the US. When we brought our chow into his surgery he said he wouldn’t see our dog without a muzzle due to his experience in the US. He soon came around to the different temperament of the Aussie bred chows. However with the international breeding now it would be difficult to say one country has a different line of breeding to another. They are the best dogs ❤️ Haha so are border collies ❤️

My childhood neighbor had a Chow. What a jerk that dog was. Always running along the fence barking, trying to dig under it, overall being a nuisance. The owner never did anything.

Had a black chow when married, 1997-2006. ( Actually he died in 2003, wife opened the street side door & Noka was blind. ) He was a handful but he was loyal and sweet but just to my ex-wife & I. When we had company, he had to be locked in a bedroom. Not good with kids. Looked like a circus bear though. Had rabbit in his blood. He took off every chance he got. I'd never have one again. Have a bulldog mix now & Chloe is the best dog ever.

That hair cut will destroy his coat. It just will. Its a shame to cut his coat so short especially since he's so young. Obviously it wont harm the dog unless you're taking him to extreme wet and cold, but it will grow back increasingly patchy and less resistant to the elements. Short term gain for long term pain.

Í once had a SHiba Inu and now own a Japanese Akita (together with a white German Shepherd). Both Japanese breeds are similar personality wise to the Chow Chow. No will to please, low food and toy drive (though the Shiba has the highest out of the 3 and actually loves to learn and do tricks etc if the owner knows how to handle them). My Akita however just doesn't play. Never. Only sometimes with my other dog or a few dog friends. And her food drive is, well, not there either lol. If she's not in the mood you could hold a steak in front of her nose and she would be too proud to eat it. Though those dogs are still very dedicated to their owners and can, if one knows how, be trained. It's actual work but worth it. My Akita can be off leash and her prey drive is under full control (if a hare jumps out the grass in front of her nose she does not react at all though she had an intense prey drive before my training). I don't even use e- or prong collars as they are forbidden in Germany but I use balanced methods. They will never be like your Border Collie and SHepherd doing commands and jumping over agility hurdles but they can be very obedient and actually really easy dogs. By easy I mean they don't need much. Once trained, they are a dream and just there for you. No need to work, just enjoying life and be your best friend. They are not for everyone but if you are the type of person for these dogs, they are the absolute best and extremely loyal.

I would agree. His tail is not a proper Chow tail. A chow tail remains curled at all times. He is more Chow than anything else, but not a pure breed. Unfortunately, this awful cut also makes him look very non Chow. Taking a closer look at him I would venture to guess that there is husky in him. Explains the eye colour (breed standard is always brown/black) and the floofy tail

This video shows a lot of ignorance towards Chinese culture in context of western culture.. fortune cookies, great wall of china.. Thanks for the stereotypes and boiling down one of the oldest civilizations to that. Saying using dog meat is disgusting? I don’t eat dog, but some could say the same about cow meat etc, just because you don’t partake doesn’t mean it’s your right to judge.

@stephencolegrove5254

Yes. My first chow was very athletic and could maintain a 6:15 minute mile pace for over six miles(at around 50 to 52 pounds); most people who say chows are lazy treat them that way, but with regular exercise they can be very athletic. Even my stockiest Chow could jog at an 8 minute pace for many miles (she was 75 pounds, not fat, a giant for a female). My current two are both good joggers (56 and 62 lbs, girl and boy).
