Chow chows are very protective. They love their owners and get attached to the one that takes care of them. People ambush me all the time, so it's pretty hard to have a nice relaxing walk with my Max. A lot of people think just because chows are cute they can run towards them. That is a big problem.
@michaelrodriguez93253 жыл бұрын
Even children, that are not supervised. This is why I find it hard to socialize my Chow. I take him during various times of the day for a walk where there's less people. The way I see it is, as long as he's good with my wife and I, his vet and his groomer, then I'm ok. For those he doesn't see to often, we supervise. Smokey is 11 now.

This is why my friend has taken to her dogs wearing a harness that reads “do not pet”, no matter the breed of dog, being rushed at is overwhelming & stressful which can cause a reactive dog a lot of confusion. Our dog harness reads “in training “, I’m seriously thinking to change it to “do not pet”

I hope I have enough life in me to raise one more Chow. My current Chow is a little unusual. He is 26 inches at the withers and weighs 120#. He's a shaded cinnamon rough coat. He gets a warm home cooked dinner every night along with a 5-mile walk during the day. He's built like a tank with legs like tree trunks. He's devoted and very affectionate to me. He has to be near me and we'll sit or lay down on my feet. He is very protective. When a Chow loves you, they LOVE you. Best dog in the world.

Chow Chows were my first dogs. I lived with five--Picasso, Frida, Osa, Little Frida, and Oso. The females were the leaders and bosses. And I remember Frida, who could be feisty at times, loved to bring inside the house baby possums she would find in the yard and nurture them. When Frida had her puppies, I would let her out to go do her business and when she would come back, she would literally count her babies to make sure they were all there. She hated baths, and one had to gently coax here with love and sweet talk before she consented. On another note, when Picasso was a baby, we would open one of the many front windows in the living room in a house that was built in 1929. He would love to stare out and any passers by would go crazy when they saw him. They are full of love! Intelligence! And yes, fidelity!

I adopted my chow chow Sunny when he was 3.5 (he's now 12). It was a questionable beginning for him; he came to me with broken teeth and paperwork that said he was taken from his mom at THREE weeks ... so there was the possiblity that he might not bond with me. I live alone in NYC and spent almost every hour of every day with him at first ... taking him on looooong walks, showing him the city. I will never forget the day I saw in his eyes that he started to trust me ... It was like winning the lottery and getting a new job and someone accepting your marriage proposal at the same time. Totally overwhelming, but it kept growing and within a year, we were bonded for life. We've been through a lot, and we sometimes go for days without speaking (: ), but my life would never have been the same without him ... I hope to have at least a couple more years with him, but I'm so happy just to have him here today! This and the other chow video Animal Watch did are such spectacular tributes to this wonderfully complicated breed - truly like no other.

I have a chow chow x american labrador retriever mix and I cannot recommend that combination enough. My dog is brilliant, loyal, beautiful, sweet, sometimes goofy, usually regal, protective, fluffy, athletic, webbed-toed, a little rain resistant, quiet, and she has this odd social streak. She is both aloof and standoffish to strangers and yet friendly and playful upon introduction and her favorite thing is to make friends with people but she doesn't go up to everyone on her own like a lab, instead opting to wait for me to introduce her to people. She loves my extended family members and friends alike. She clearly enjoys letting people into her pack. With other dogs, she is friendly and playful, though sometimes a bit vocal which can intimidate some dogs. She is very expressive with other dogs and will not be dominated. With some dogs she will display dominance, with others there is no need at all for any of that so she just plays, and with others she may give them a loud bark which clearly means "no" or "stop". I really believe that the combination of chow and lab results in a more balanced dog than either breed on its own which isn't to say that there's anything wrong with the original breeds but this is a peanut butter and chocolate situation. Edit: side note - this isn't the most common combination in the world but it's common enough that there's usually a few on petfinder

If the dog breed itself has protective personality then it's bad for the pet owners to expect them to be gentle. It's like expecting lion to not rule over his territory. The aggression itself gives them their personality. Humans should understand that sometimes we don't need any active interventions. Just let the nature take it's course. Thank you. We get stopped on walks all the time people saying they would not trust a chow chow with kids, my partner has been called a bad mum for letting our boy walk our chow. They are inseperable, our boy has to walk my son to school and as soon as he hears the kids leaving school hes in the window waiting for him. Hes great with all animals and children and people (even though he's been attacked so many times by dogs off leads), he has been so easy to train, couldn't imagine life without him. Best decision we have made was choosing a chow chow, even after all the research and bad reputation they have, being hard to train, attached to one owner etc. They dong give love easy like other breeds, you have to gain it, but they're not aggressive at all when trained properly. I think a big problem with chow chow and strangers, when they are pups, cause they are so cute, people want to touch them and grab them without permission, that could be a huge factor. We try to take bear out early hours of the morning and later at night now, we socialised our bear from day one, with people, dogs and animals, but he was attacked so many times by other dogs off of leads, we took him to dog classes thinking we had done something wrong but we learned quickly that other dogs are insecure around chows because they are so confident, and other dogs can't read chows cause of the tails, its sad cause bear loved playing with other dogs, he does have a few he plays with in gardens, to protect our boy we made the decision to just walk him when there aren't as many dogs about off leashes. We had one older lady crying her eyes out cause her dog attacked our bear, she said she had never seen any sort of aggression in the 9 years she had her so it scared her. We explained how other breeds can't read chow chows and it weren't her fault, just keep it on a lead in future. It drives me mad at parks where dogs must be on leads at all times, a dog will come running at us out of nowhere with the owner just shouting "its ok she/he is fine" but they almost always attacked him. We tell him to sit thinking if they don't see his tail they will not be threatened by him but he's been attacked while sitting and the poor thing will just sit while being bit, luckily it was only small dogs, but I swore I will stop any dogs getting in his space after the last time, hence why we take him out early and late, and if we do come upon any unleashed dogs that try getting close ill put myself in front until the owner collects, or if its aggressive ill boot it, which id rather not do, I absolutely love dogs, but they should ALL be leashed in public parks etc.

@@gardenfullofcolour dont be childish about my comments, if yours is a cutie then good for you. on the other hand, in 1993 whilst working in gran canaria i was good friends with a man who had four presa canario , he used them to guard his house and grounds after dark and was under no illusion about the dogs temperament stating that i must use the intercom at the gates or if i entered without doing so i would be mauled to death. if you want to speak to him directly about this i can arrange for you to do so. the look and demeanor of the presa, its ability to cause damage to robust inanimate objects and almost unlimited endurance make it a fearsome dog if provoked. the dangerous dogs list is there for good reasons and owners must always assume that their dog is capable of being aggressive and take precautions as necessary

@@yuppp7204 most people don't have common sense about dealing with dogs at all. I take my dog out for walks and I see all kinds of crazy. Women pulling the leash as soon as they see you and yelling no no constantly to their dog, people reaching other dogs from behind to abruptly touch them cause they look cute, not correcting rude behavior of the dog at all, etc. The only reason you don't see so many accidents is that most dog breeds are too docile to object or do anything really dangerous.

Superb video. The only dog I ever wanted and when the time was right I had him, unfortunately, for only 10 short years. He broke my heart when he went very suddenly which was 6 years ago. I've still not got over him and I never will. (I'm 64). Very true, all that you have said, it's critically important to socialise the breed from the get-go and for the owner to be the alpha in the home. "Boris" was amazing with everybody including all the young childen I fostered. I did take him to puppy school and tried to train him off the lead but in the end I never had complete confidence in him not walking off. I also didn't trust other dogs' behaviour around him. However, he was only ever on a slip-over collar which indeed would slip off if we pulled against each other. When that did happen he'd stand still and wait for me to put it back on. He loved going to vets and they loved him, but they also had other Chow Chows on their books who were complete monsters and when they were brought in all staff were put on standby. As with all breeds, a dog's demeanor and behaviour is a reflection of the owner. Which leads on to all the puupy-farmed Chow Chow crosses coming in from Eastern Europe which inevitably end up in rescue centres.

I grew up until I was 5 with a chow chow named Sheba :,) she was a grumpy old lady and had started getting gray hairs by the end of her life (still a sweet bear baby) but from everything I’ve heard from my mom and uncle and grandparents, she was nothing but protective over me. She and our Rottweiler Tasha would cuddle with me while I watched Tv and let me lay on them and basically do anything. They loved being around me and were very protective of me as a baby. People have such a weird perspective on certain breeds of dogs, and vilify them due to what they hear instead of what they actually see. Having two breeds that have been constantly looked down upon by the general public, basically be my cuddle buddies for my early childhood is proof that it really is based on the owner. No dogs are born mean, they’re raised mean by bad people. I for one love chowchows and hope that one day i can adopt one again! R.I.P. Sheba 💔

When I was a kid we had a Chow Chow/Blue Heeler mix named Caesar and a Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix named Cleo. Funny enough Ceasar didn't have his ancestors fluffy coat except for around his neck! He absolutely loved my mom, and that was pretty much the issue for everyone for the 7-8 years we had him. And my dad loved Cleo while she attached to me at the hip lol.. Unfortunately one day my mom and dad were having a pretty loud argument that was freaking him out so he hid behind my mom, but when she stepped back he got scared and bit her calf (not the first time) and my dad had enough. To my moms protest he got him put down 😔. My mom still misses him to this day, and I sometimes find myself missing the little fluff ball to, he wasn't ever that mean to me 😅 Rest easy Caesar, I hope you and Cleo are playing together in sky like you used to as puppies ❤

My own chow chow attacked me when I was a kid. Luckily, I had a thick jacket that protected my skin from being punctured by most of its teeth, yet I still have a scar on my wrist of the one tooth that got through. I definitely recommend people to be observant of these breeds, especially around children.

My family had a purebred chow chow when I was growing up. We got her when I was about 18 months and she was a few weeks and she lived 17 years. She was protective, yes, of her people and her property but not often aggressive. I am the eldest of 4 and she let all of us lay on her like a pillow, play with her, crawl all over her, and was the same with most other kids that ever came to visit. She was cautious of men, but would give a little bark, maybe a growl, and if you have her her space, she would calm down and eventually come to them for affection. She bit one person in her whole life, and it was someone trying to take her bone after she gave multiple warnings and it was really just a nip that didn't break the skin.

Had a chow that lived till 15. Would bark at anyone new outside my gate but would immediately wag his tail once I let them in. Laziest fog I ever knew. He took himself for walks, whole neighborhood knew him, was very popular. He'd run out the gate and growl if I tried to get close to him to bring him back inside. Very laid back, chilled dog that liked certain spots in the house and garden. Potty trained himself to a specific part of the garden. Knew no tricks, wouldn't chase a ball. Loved ear rubs but never sought for attention other than whining to be let out. Would sing when someone played the flute. Don't try touching his food bowl. Literally gand fed him as a puppy into adult years and still territorial about touching his food bowl. Loved him

I had a chow growing up. My grandma bought the puppy from a crackhead for 11 dollars. He was sweet as a puppy until he grew up. Every time I would go to feed him he would growl. It was terrifying. One time 2 Rottweilers escaped from a junk yard and tried to attack him in our backyard. They left limping and he had their blood all over his face. It was wild seeing him celebrate.

I've had Chows since 1996. Most have been rescues. My first Chow didn't initially like anyone even looking at me or talking to me. She'd get between us and give them an evil eye-ball. Broke her of that behavior real fast by letting other people such as strangers, give her a treat. After a while, she figured that people existed to serve her, and she no longer disliked them. My current chow is the only one I got as a puppy. She's been sweet to everyone. Walk her every night in a crowded pedestrian zone down town and everyone stops to pet her. She loves everyone. We've been attacked by other dogs (while we are on the leash), and she tries to get them to play rather than fight. She tries to run away rather than fight a dog, but she could do real damage if she wanted to. She simply refuses to be mean.
