Some people actually scold me because 'oh, this dog's not allowed to play' - yes, she is, just not when I JUST told her to stay. 'poor dog, you're too strict!' - no, I'm clear. This is a no, that is a yes. She has a shtload of freedom, far more than most dogs, because she's trained. 'poor puppy, it's okay, it's just a treat!' It's because of people who give out treats without asking, that she had to be trained not to take treats. I'm a farrier, she meets tons of people, it got to a point where people were sneaking treats despite me telling them not to. She gained weight without me feeding her...

My family lost multiple dogs to poisoning because people are fucking dicks. It's infuriating to deal with people that have no concept of boundaries regarding dogs. I remember snapping (rather inarticulately, sadly, I don't do well being put on the spot) at this guy on a bus who insisted on petting a woman's pooch despite her clear "no". He still had the nerve to act like we were the assholes.

Sadly, yes. My daughter’s Chihuahua and my mother’s Shi Tzu both got the gift of full training. We made that choice FOR THEIR SAFETY. Regardless of size, a dog that is trained will have its focus on their handler during a structured walk and will largely ignore an out-of-control dog that’s going postal on the end of a leash, greatly decreasing the chance of a fight because they don’t engage themselves. They’ve got recall which means that you can quickly call them to you and keep them safe when on a flexi-leash. They don’t lunge from under a restaurant table when another dog spies them and barks at them. Not to mention that dogs tend to love the individual attention they get during training. They have the full focus of their handler-owner. It’s one-on-one time with your dog. It’s getting paid over and over and over again with treats, pets, toys and praise. A one hour obedience class means a full hour of that. Every maintenance session means the same for the duration of that session. Why deny your dog that joy simply because it’s small? Being fully trained means your dog gets more freedom, more stimulation because you know you can take your dog everywhere. Knowing that means you will take your dog with you more often instead of leaving him/her home alone. Dogs are pack animal and their fondest wish is to be with their pack without being stressed, without feeling the need to be on the defensive all the time. Why deny this to your dog, again, simply because it’s small? I keep repeating it: “If it barks at the front end and wags it’s tail at the back end, it’s a dog. Treat it like one.” That means socialising, training, and taking it places. You’ll both be much happier.

BUT they were NOT small dogs. If the owners were walking, not seated, they would be dragged. MOST owners justify their lack of skills in training by pretending its not fair to the dog. Its an excuse to deflect embarrassment.

I say that last line daily. People get so offended when they see my dog, an APBT being well mannered at a store meanwhile their dogs are barking up a storm and causing a scene. One lady had the audacity to act afraid of my dog solely because “it’s terrifying that’s it isn’t moving, I feel like I’m about to be attacked”. I said “no lady, you just don’t know what a well trained dog looks like”.

Ma'am, any behavior out of the expected can be unnerving. Add to that that a stoic dog is hard to read for obvious reasons and even a dog you should know is a bit worrysome. My cousin had a corso for training, and he stuck to me like glue. He let me pet him and constantly followed me both to dupervise me and because he liked me. The odds of him biting me were low. And I was still uneasy because of how stone faced he was.

Our 7 yr old rescue pit goes to sit at outdoor restaurants multiple times per week. We have a lot of the opposite interaction "is that a service dog?" "Wow he just lays there?" "My dog would be going wild trying see everyone". You can tell who the nervous dog people, they walk by just staring with big eyes like they never saw a well behaved large dog. Had a comment "thats the calmest pit I've ever seen". Like lol yea for starters, he isn't an undisciplined little rat dog. He knows better, so that helps.

Great reply! The worst case ime is when the other dog starts charging and the owner either doesn't react at all, or gets nervous and starts to pull the lead in a totally planless anxious way making their dog feel their fear and starts charging even stronger, and sometimes pulls the owner with them...

Simply teaching a dog good manners and they can come out and enjoy life with you and not be stuck at home all their lives, or causing you a headache when you go out. I enjoy socializing and hitting the town with my dog, he's so friendly and well behaved, he's really enjoyed by people, he makes life cooler for me and everyone we meet. A few hard rules and a lot of love makes for a great relationship with your dog where you both trust each other and can enjoy your life together.

Not gonna lie it made me feel a little better seeing that your dogs did look over at them. I’ve been training my seven month old German Shepherd puppy as a PTSD service dog since he was 8 weeks old. 30-45 minutes of training (in 15 min sessions) daily and when something like that happens, he still looks over at them but continues to walk. Your videos have really helped me with the training him!
@nogames8982

You have a German Shepherd. They watch everything. Of course your dog is going to look. That is actually a good thing. He wants an alert dog that knows what’s going on around them. So I would not worry one else about your dog looking at a dog that’s barking in Sterling. They can look at that dog and keep walking. No issue at all. You want an alert dog that’s listening to you. You do not want to robot that is ignoring its environment. I have a German shepherd guide dog. She is watching everything around her. That’s her job. She could walk by a group of snarling barking dogs with no issues but you better believe she’s watching them. She’s also watching where we’re going so I don’t run into anything. She doesn’t miss a beat. Doesn’t take a step out of line. So don’t worry about your dog looking at something. Dogs are predators, they have eyes on the front of their head for a reason. So do humans. ❤ how would you feel if you were walking straight and you were not allowed to turn your head from side to side to see your environment?

it's interesting because my GS isn't confrontational with other dogs barking at her. she would sit by me and watch and not engage. I would reward her on a good job. I thought it was a phase when she didn't have her bark, but her good behavior kept up when she learned how to bark and not just puppy bark, her deep almost mature bark.

One of my favorite moments at the animal shelter I work at is when police met me in two squad cars with K9 units after hours because the alarm had gone off. My adopted pit bull was with me (as always), chilling off-leash with me (not in a heel, just loosely following, as one does when relaxed). I checked and turned off the alarm control panel, searched the shelter for anything unusual, and told the officers it was fine. One had started to follow me back in with his finished GSD partner, but at the smell of the other dogs his dog lunged toward the kennels on his leash while barking and snapping, and when corrected, he proceeded to piss on his handler's leg. That amused me quite a bit, NGL.

It's because these GSDs didn't detect any anxiety from their handlers. The Labrador sees some anxiety on the part of its owner towards these strangers and their GSDs. That's why the Labrador was barking to protect the lady.

We’ve been having issues with multiple aggressive golden retrievers in my area. My building and city that I live in are very dog friendly, and the number of goldens lunging for my shepherd on leash must be 8-10. The only other dog breeds I’ve seen lunge for him have been the small yappy ones or some kind of pit/bully. Socialization and training are needed for ALL dogs. Don’t own a dog period if you can’t put in the time and effort.

When I was a 4 year old girl, I had an extreme fear of dogs because they charged at my mom few times when I was a baby. So my dad, who was a soldier, got me a lab puppy from military working mom and dad. I was still afraid of all the other dogs😅 so, when I was old enogh (6 or 7) out of fear that my dog will cause other dogs to come and fight us, I unknowingly trained him to this level of obedience when other dogs bark and charge at us on the street when I was going to my grandma's house. I remember shaking so much but looking straight, giving my dog who was almost the same size as me, command to come close to my leg and walk steady with me. Back then in my country nobody trained dogs, execept the police and military. I'm now so proud of myself how my dad tought me to handle my fear and dog. I'm still afraid of other dogs, because can't predict how they will behave off leash. I trust my own dog, and dogs of those people who I know socialize them properly. I just wish my body don't have such reaction around dogs that I'm not familiar with. I literally don't feel my legs when dogs without a leash pass by me..😢

Dude is 85 pounds , was definitely trained , when I got him he was like a brand new factory dog haha His nails were so clean , his teeth bright white , his pads on his paws looked like they never touched grass, dirt, pavement. He's super smart , super protective, comes up to you and loves to cuddle , he loves children , He was already potty trained. I'm working right now on his only issue which is he freaks out when in a non aggressive way when we go on walks and he sees little tiny dogs. He wants to play and starts screaming at the top of his lungs freaking out but it's not aggressive whatsoever , no growling, no teeth showing just pure joy wanting to run and play.

My neighbor and i both have german Shepherds, mine is 70% trained to our goal but can still do off lead commands with mild distractions, has protected me from a stray in our unfenced yard. His barks at the wind in his 9ft fence with a Yorkie too 🙄 it's only 8 months can't wait to see this older gentleman handle him on walks when it's full grown

When we pass a dog that either charges my dog or starts going ballistic, and my dog just cannot be bothered by such nonsense and keeps going … I do sometimes tell my dog extra loud what a good dog she is. Some people are not happy with me praising my dog. 😂

I have to deal with this every time I go out in public with my service dog, I went to the mall last week and a tiny untrained pet that was scared to death and pulling their owners tried to attack my service dog, LUCKILY I saw them before the dog started barking and growling and they were about 20 feet away so we were safe. They had to pick up the dog and it was squirming and going absolutely NUTS! Meanwhile, my service dog that I owner trained didn't even look at the dog, he just kept walking and didn't care. When we left the mall they were on an aisle that we had to pass to go to the elevators so I made my doggo heel on the right side so the dog couldn't get to him and the dog went INSANE and even bit their owners when they picked it up. My service dog looked over for a split second and looked right back at me without a care in the world. My service dog doesn't have a drive at all, he doesn't care about anyone or anything other than me, his chair and his nap time. I really don't understand why people bring their scared pets into public, the dog clearly doesn't like it and it is CLEARLY a threat to society so WHY CAN'T THEY LEAVE THEIR DOGS AT HOME?? Also, why the hell do people get dogs if they don't put any amount of training into their dog? Dog training keeps you and your dog safe, especially when you teach them to leave it, heel, recall and stay. Dog training is very easy to do and it could save your doggos life so why don't people do it??

I use a harness for safety. My dog is trained, but I'd rather have a safety net in a scary situation and be able to grab her without hurting her. Harnesses don't mean untrained dogs :/

Yesterday I was getting some supplies for my 10 week old German Shepard pup and the woman working there brought her 3 month old Golden pup from behind the counter to visit. The golden stood there bouncing up and down barking and causing a ruckus and my pup sat there as I told her. I had been teaching her all week. Finally she stood up and stayed in place and watched him continue this behaviour until he started to lunge at her. She made one quick lunge at him and came back to place as I corrected and instructed her. She then gave him a piece of her mind and walked away with me. I was pretty proud of her to take to her training in a week but thought he either needed some or forgot his. She said he was getting bad habits from the other store dog.

I’m always proud of my GS mix when he pays other dogs no attention. They’ll be barking etc and he walks so unbothered. It’s like make no mistake he will fck your dog up but he’s trained not to in this moment.
