Your little talk about being a Teddy Bear and getting hurt by criticism really resonated with me. I want to become better, but I also get my feelings hurt easily and it's hard to balance the two. I often view this trait as a negative thing but I'm starting to realize that it's just because I care about people a lot, want to make them happy, and always want to give my best. So just like you said, you only get hurt because you try really hard. You are one of the few who really genuinely care about giving top quality care and that's why you are going to make a great doctor. We are proud of you, America!

Same here... I wish I was one of those people who could take the criticism and improve from it , but it is difficult and I am sure that some of the others that get criticized also then feel hurt , but try not to show it either in front of the others. America, you are just lovely, smart and beautiful!!! I love your hair, I love your videos and I thank you for sharing these important moments of your life with all of us. Theres no one else in the world like you and because you have heart with genuine feelings AND a magnificent brain, someday soon you are going to be a damn good physician!!! 💚

Im the exact same way and I don’t like it.. I wish I could just be like okay it’s whatever rather than tear up about it later like her. I guess we all just have to remind ourselves on the daily (when given CONSTRUCTIVE criticism) that they are just doing it to better us for the future even if it comes out sounding mean or tough.

its so different in my country - going to uni felt like being roasted throughout the workshop/tutorial/lecture and sitting in the "hot chair". It was a torture that kept us pushing our selves and still and the end of the day it wasn't enough lol. I remember during last year geriatrics my assignment advisor was literally grilling me for 23mins shouting at me that my assignment was the worst she have ever seen during her 20 year of practice when I LITERALLY SPENT MY holiday in Europe sitting and completing it to the scratch. Instead of being sad at laughed thanked her and walked out giggling. After 5 minutes I had to complete practical part and I scored max. Criticism is not pleasant but oh boy it teaches you resilience:))))

I feel the same exact way! I'm in Radiology school and I just got back some constructive criticism from my supervisor at the hospital for my end of semester evaluation and it threw me off guard because like you said I come to work and give 100% and am on time everyday and then i read their comments and I get so emotional and don't understand where the are coming from because I only ever have the best of intentions. It's nice to know someone else feels the same way about these types of things and we just have to suck it up like you said and stop worrying about every little thing and grow from it and move on!

I just started a new job and I feel the saaame way. I get upset sometimes when my manager says "Can I give you some feedback?" and she tells me how to improve because it makes me feel like I'm failing, but I just tell myself to take the criticism and learn from it (easier said than done, I know). Sometimes I write it down so I can remember it and look at it later. It's hard because you want to do a really good job and you want to know what to do in every situation... but that's just not realistic. Go easy on yourself, girl. You're doing great.

Hey, America I am a first year in college not even grad school and I just wanted to say that you truly motivate me when I don't want to do anything anymore. And about criticisms, I can relate to you in that way I do take thing personal and that's what scares about going into medicine. I had my best friend tell me I wasn't good enough to become a doctor because I take things to heart and I am sensitive according to her. It did hurt and it planted a seed of doubt in myself but at the same time it made me want to prove her wrong, I just hope I am good enough to become a doctor.

America, you are such a beautiful soul, inside and out! I always appreciate your honesty and how unafraid you are to show your vulnerable side! It always important to think about the silver linings to tough situations. While you may think you take criticism to heart too much, that will help you in patient settings - you won’t be the kind of doctor that speaks without thinking twice about how their comments may affect a patient! You rock, and keep kicking ass 😊

America, as a fellow resident and viewing your videos, I am glad to see you've honestly shined and excelled. I really appreciate how you've opened yourself up to the world about the world of criticism. Unfortunately criticism never stops. Some days you'll get good criticism and other days, you'll get some not so good criticism but hey, you got this. You are going to be a great Doctor. Continue to put your 100%, continue to always go in with a positive attitude, your patients will be forever grateful. If at the end of the day you know deep down inside you did your absolute best, then go with that gut feeling but NEVER EVER let anyone make you believe you suck because you don't, they do. They feed off from trying to make great people second guess themselves. Keep your chin up America and go be the best and great doctor you are destined to be

Hey America! I just had to stop mid-video to let you know that you are not alone when it comes to criticism hurting your feelings a little bit. I just finished my first year of pharmacy school, my first rotation, and started my first job in the pharmacy to gain more experience. I found myself feeling upset because I felt like there was so much to learn and i made a couple of mistakes and was getting correction. I think we just have to remind ourselves that everyone has to start somewhere and that we are still learning and will eventually get to where we want to be in due time. Professional school is not easy by any means. The fact that you take your corrections to heart just shows that you truly care about medicine and your future patients. Hugs!

I know it's difficult not to take criticism to heart but it will get easier with time ,especially as you demonstrate self awareness of taking it personally. My advice would be to just be grateful for the criticism you receive now. You can only get better day by day. As a physician myself, the further you progress the less feedback you actually receive. You now depend way more on self reliance and self validation of your own competency. I actually struggled with the fact that I received less criticism as I progressed (very counter-intuitive lol) Keep believing in yourself America! You are already an inspiration to many :)

Second comment! lol you inspire me so much and you make me want to study for and apply to pharmacy school even more than I already do. Ur such a strong person if you came this far by yourself. I think the criticism in 3rd year is necessary bc think of how it would be without it? They are just trying to make you the best doctor but if it bothers you then talk with ur confident friends about it. Im sure they feel the same. Love you America 🙂
@margaretsmith36296 жыл бұрын
Having just finished my third year I can attest that EVERYONE has a similar experience! It sucks to get bad feedback all the time. No matter how much you give third year it seems like you can't win and trust me you are NOT alone in the feeling! Try to hang with your friends to decompress and laugh about it. We had a lot of fun reflecting on the stupid little things we did - breaking scrub, calling patients the wrong name, going into the wrong bathrooms.... by the end of it you will have SUCH a thick skin and you'll be a better person for it. Love on calyx and know that we ALLLL feel you. We are in this together. Attendings see you 5mins a day sometimes and your friends and family know you better and know your commitment to your patients better. You can only do your best and other people's opinion of you is none of your business!

I had the same experience with my internship as a Pharmacy technician. Constructive criticism was hard for me to take, I cried in the car after I was done or during lunch break. I didn't like making mistakes but as time went on. I learned to accept that and became more confident slowly.. at the end, my mentors were proud of me because I improved after they gave me criticism. I love your vlogs, you help me push myself to be better and study hard. ❤❤❤

Criticism is a hard thing to learn how to handle. As much as I don’t like to receive criticism, I understand that it is crucial to my growth. Honestly I feel like I can relate to how you feel about criticism. It's hard to be tough and not take things personally but at the end of the day we are only human. Good luck you'll do great and be a great doctor!

I’m not a medical student, but I start grad school in the fall for mental health counseling. I’m definitely nervous about experiencing that kind of feed-back in practicum and working with clients. I really feel for you about the criticism. I haven’t dealt with it a ton, but I did experience professional criticism in my first job out of college and I always took it so close to heart. I feel like I don’t really have advice per se, but I can definitely say that I think over time it doesn’t sting as much? Or you build relationships with the people criticizing you and you trust them more to be kind in their criticisms. I don’t know if any of that will help, and I know medical school is a tough environment, but I hope it helps to know people are rooting for you!! For what it’s worth, you seem like a very dedicated person, but you still seem so down to earth and personable! I think so many physicians can seem too academic or they use jargon without always remembering to explain it to patients. My point is, you seem to have a great personality and drive and passion and I think the other aspects that people have commented on will just come with time and practice. Just keep in mind that you’re still learning and that while it may seem like everyone else is so confident, they may also be struggling but not talking about it outwardly. Thinking of you! Sorry about this obnoxiously long comment 😂
