You know what I love about Tom as opposed to other online trainers? He shows us his mistakes. When I first started training my dog, it was hard for me to try things because I felt like if I wasn't perfect, it would screw things up. Seeing Tom make a mistake and wave it off after acknowledging it helped me realize you don't have to be perfect, you just have to acknowledge the mistake and try better next time. I think too many online trainers edit their mistakes out and with Tom, you get Tom and that's why he's a good teacher...he's relatable.

Honestly pretty eye-opening. I think many people don’t realise what it takes to train a dog. Knowing the command isn’t enough, they gotta be able to do it in any situation, and that takes a lot of work. Could explain why some dogs aren’t so well behaved outside compared to when at home; the owner just didn’t teach the dog to do a command in any given situation. So happy to have found your channel 🙌🏻

I like this. I use the "touch" command word when we're out and he's on the long (30ft) lead and at the max. I call his name and say "touch" and he comes running to touch my fingers for a food reward. Then I let him go back to what he was doing because I don't want him to associate that command with having to leave from his "play" time. Sometimes we'll leave and sometimes we'll stay.

As a dog trainer as well I love the info you give to the audience: clients, pet owners etc. I’ve only been on my own for 2yrs and having someone like your business give info out like this it’s kinda of a refresher of what I was taught in DTSchool. Wish more trainers would be as open minded and take something from each other as we’re all still learning something. Shoot I send your podcast to my clients because I’m not the “only way or the highway”. Great job, love seeing y’all grow👍🏼

I love the bed idea, she often doesn't use it for her bed, but she uses it when she is upset. If she starts barking, on our deck for a dog going by, I let her in and she goes straight to her bed for a couple of minutes. We originally said bed and now she goes on her own when needed. I love learning new ways over and over, I learned I guess the old ways 45 yrs. ago and they did work for most of our dogs or friends dogs but learning about behaviours in training, is quite interesting and its easy to understand, when relating to people. Thank you once again.

I find teaching the send away helps big time. I move back whilst the dog is sent away hence creating more distance. I also so use round rubber mats (used for soccer) and send the dog left touch, right touch , so the dog goes from one to the other. My dog loves being up high, hence the tree climbing : ) She will go to any flat mat or raised surface. Lovely dog Tom . Thanks and great work, well explained : )

I use this now when I come home in the car as I have to open the gates to get in and it’s off dangerous main road! I make Luna go to her bed on the balcony until I back car into carport and close gates then break and loads of reward and play ball. Fantastic to teach your dog this for many reasons it’s also taught her impulse control as she is very excited I’m home I only have to point and say it once. Thanks 😊 .

I'm not Tom, but I've unexpectedly taught my dog to touch on the corner of a rug in my living room next to the back door, by having him sit before I open the door (a high reward). I think as long as the dog can understand something is different about the spot it can work. The bigger the difference, the easier it will be. My dog now also touches on his fluffy dog bed. At the front door I make him sit before opening it to go for walk, and he tries to sit on the corner of the tiny rug, and then I can't open the door! :) I think I need to work on the "proofing" Tom mentioned, because right now sit and touch are kind of mixed together in his mind.

Absolutely brilliant. Tom's training video's with Hawk (focused heal training and place, etc) really resonate with me, as I am learning to improve my body language and how to break things down for my dog. I am searching for more of his videos in this style. Someone's comment in a different video said that Tom has found his calling. It made me think of a really neat audio book called "Mastery" by Robert Greene. Tom: If you are reading my comment, check out this book. You might like it.

QUESTION I have a female GSD. Bec of her history she has become very instinctual on people. When do I press for obedience & when to trust her? Or should I always press for obedience. Example she has that relationship with my husband. When he is in pain or having anxiety she lunges at all except a few people. Is that her protecting or her insecurity & she is reacting bec she doesn't have faith in his handing? She doesn't do that often with me.
