This is the most in depth, easy to understand, and effective video I have ever seen for focused heel training. I’m trying to train my medical alert SD the basics on my own so I only have to pay for the specialized alert and response training and videos like this help me out so freaking much. Thank you so much for this video and anyone questioning if it works.. IT DOES. FANTASTICALLY.

I recently adopted an 8 month old Belgian Malinois from the shelter and was overwhelmed with negative behavior that I’ve had to correct. Watching this video alone I put my dog in a focused heel and center walking command within a couple days. I’ve watched countless training vids, but this is the most comprehensive and helpful video I’ve watched. Thank you so much for providing an excellent Malinois training vid! My boy is a completely different dog !

I have started to re-watch the lessons again. I started off teaching Oscar to focus. He learned to do that and I went on to something else. He was doing a heel-sit, and for the most part being loose lease. We had a set back, he stopped focusing on me and not listening. Two days if starting back on keeping his attention he was much better today on his walk. I tried your lesson on stopping him charging out the door. It took 6 tries but I finally got Oscar to sit when I opened the door and let me step out first. You are a terrific trainer, I want to train my dog with love not fear.

I'll have to try this out since now he focuses on my hands every time I move them.

Thank you so much for this excellent video; in 5 minutes, I could see the light bulb come on in my 2 year old lab's head, (and mine as well) and she said, "Oh THATS what you want me to do! " She has been through several obedience classes, but always with a lack of a good heel position (rear end pointing West while the front end was pointing North.) Balance work on a half ball didn't help. Good in agility, but as she is long and boxy, and lacks good hind end awareness, drops bars. The spiraling exercise, AFTER we really worked on engagement, definitely increased her hind end awareness; almost like a miracle. The engagement strengthened her trust in me; after all, it is hard to walk forward (or whatever) without looking forward. (I can only imagine that as a human, but it seems daunting.) That takes a LOT of trust, and that is what these exercises, and your training method, taught. Thank you. I feel more confident, but more importantly, my dog feels more confident. I subscribed. Am looking forward to subscribing to your Patreon.

Thanks Nate, loved this video! I noticed when you had Ari in the heel position at first, using food in hand to the side of her face, and waiting for here to look at you - she kept looking back at your hand with the food every time you said “heel.” Does that work out (where the dog doesn’t look at your hand) once you begin the exercise with no food in your hand? 13:03
@NateSchoemer5 күн бұрын
Thank you for your comment! I’m glad you loved the video! Yes, the behavior of looking at the hand will eventually fade, especially once the reward is no longer in that hand. To help speed up the process, you can reward from the opposite hand or use a secondary terminal marker. A secondary terminal marker is a cue that predicts release plus reward, but the reward is placed away from the handler-such as a treat or toy positioned in a specific spot. This helps the dog focus less on your hand and more on the behavior you’re teaching. For example, once Ari is in the correct heel position and looks at me, I can use the secondary terminal marker to release her to a reward that’s been placed elsewhere. Over time, this creates a stronger focus on the behavior and eye contact rather than on the hand holding the food. Keep practicing, and you’ll see that the focus shifts naturally as you progress. Thanks for watching and engaging with the channel! 😊

Thanks again! Focus heel is one of the most complicated behaviors to teach a dog. This is why most competitive dogs sports require this to be taught to help separate the good dogs from exceptional dogs. This can take a dog anywhere from 3 months to even a year to fully understand. I hope this helps and thanks again for supporting the channel.

Nate, I have two competition obedience dog. The older one, a Sheltie, is most of the way to her Obedience Trial Champion (Otch) title, and a puppy who is just starting out. The youngster has a nice, natural heel, recently finishing her Beginner Novice B title with a 198,5. I am putting both dogs on your focused heel position. Believe it or not, the older dog is in greater need of this training than my puppy. This is similar to how I started out my puppy in attention heeling. I will be following your method since it is so much like what helps my Sheltie thrive, and my training as an operant trainer. I love how you show each step. I really need that structure, as do my dogs.

Arg..small mistakes repeated over a long time are hard to break..I used too much kibble in my hand and being mouthy and aggressive in wanting to get the kibble he’d knock some out, or drop some himself, so every time we start the heel, he’d stop and vacuum the floor looking for the dropped kibble..this started to happen with every command as he just expects food to be on the floor. Next mistake was not using a leash in training, I had no way other than begging to get him to refocus his attention..my trainer was trying to get me used to it, I felt totally clumsy with the food, the leash, the dog, the timing..lots to learn!

Like the work! On your verbal markers. What is the difference between the "YES" and "Break".
Nate i absolutely love this video!!!! I am a dog trainer in the beginner stages of starting my own business, I have just one question about step 6. I never thought that "you" should turn your body but that the dog should learn to "get" into the heel position. In the beginning stages of teaching where heel is. This is not a criticism but a question You are an amazing trainer. Thank you so much.
@NateSchoemer2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, this is a technique I learned from Tom Rose and have found success with it. The idea is that you're making a smooth transition from the backward follow exercise into the heel position. This helps keep the dog straight when they are in heel and helps prevent the dog from being crooked while walking in heel. This would be different from calling the dog into heel, the dog fails to get into a straight and proper heel position, and then you adjust to make the heel straight. I think that's what you mean by "I never thought that "you" should turn your body but that the dog should learn to "get" into the heel position".
@diznyland62142 жыл бұрын
@@NateSchoemer Hello, love your videos. Is this method effective to help correct the dog’s “in line” position while sitting at your left side? When I try to get my 6-month-old Alaskan Klee Kai to come into alignment for a heel sit, he tends to back up and then sit a step or two away or at a weird angle. I've tried luring him with food in many different ways but we just can't see to get it right. I feel like I went wrong somewhere when teaching him to sit and I must have reinforced the backing away behavior without realizing it.

Thank you for this!! I’m training my 6month puppy to be a diabetic alert dog (mostly just around the house). He won’t be going in public very much but I would like to have him well enough trained to have the option. He’s very distracted by smells in grass and dogs that bark at him, so I will try this!

Thanks for the great videos. I'm getting started with my 11 mo. Mal that I've had for less than a week. She is very receptive to treat training. Sit, stay, down, all good and working now on heeling. She is doing something that I can't find so far in your videos. When on leash (or heel training), sometimes she will just stop because she doesn't want to go where I'm going. She will stay put, challenging me to not continue in that direction. Eventually, a treat and come command will work, but I think that is rewarding her to stop whenever she wants. Any tips or point me to one of your videos would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First, thanks for becoming a member and supporting the channel; it's much appreciated. Yes, I would first start by teaching leash pressure. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnTFYoxua8qMeLM Once you're at a point where the dog will follow the leash without any resistance while training, you can reinforce the pressure with a correction if needed. For example, you're on a walk, and your dog knows to follow the leash when you apply leash pressure. While walking, your dog decides to stop and put on the breaks. Once that happens, I would use the leash pressure. If the dog resists, I would say "no," followed by a leash pop, and then I would return to the pressure. Once done correctly, the dog will instantly move forward to continue the walk. At that point, I would release the pressure and praise the dog for making the correct decision, and we would continue the walk. This works incredibly well. Let me know how it goes, and I hope this helps! Cheers!

@@NateSchoemer Nate, this technique is working, albeit slower than anything else she is learning from me. I guess every dog is different, right? Thanks again for the tip.

2:13 as soon as you say "yes" the dog looks at the hand. but eh, fair enough x)
@NateSchoemer10 ай бұрын
lol! Yeah, that’s expected. We mark when the dog is looking at us, so that’s what the dog is being rewarded for. They look at the hand after the mark, because they know that they are getting paid. 😁

Yeah it makes sense. It just almost looks like "yes" commands the behavior of looking at the treat because the dog does it right after. But your methods are legit, thanks for the video.

Can any dog be retrained. Especially if they are a rescue dog or a dog that has had a bad start as a puppy and there previous experience from there owner haven't been trained. Thank you for your time and advice .

I would start back from the beginning and treat the dog as if he/she has never been trained. I would start with engagement training and move forward from there. Just follow the basic obedience series and progress at your dogs learning speed. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZSbmYtqoah6n7s

Nate, english being my second language I would like to ask a question from the video. What I took out from this video is that a dog must be conditioned to the posture/position we want them to be maintaining before we give them a command, and in this case heel. Am I getting this right?
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I like to make sure I can get a dog to do the behavior off of a physical cue, before I put it on a verbal command. :)

I really like your positive approach. I’m curious about how you fade the food lure. Do you slowly ask for a longer heeling sequence before rewarding? Any tips on the best way to fade the food? Thank you!!!!

So glad to have found this video. I have a GSD, and she is always looking to learn something new. Your training methods are similar to what I have been doing with her- I am looking forward to starting to teach her focused heeling! You have 2 new fans, me & Tally. Thanks for making this training avaliable.
