I was born in Japan and grew up here in San Francisco so haven’t really looked around to see what onigiri recipes are online in the US. Perhaps in SF, there are too many people who have actually been to Japan and know what the real thing is or maybe the restaurant that open here are started by Japanese people so there might not be anything different but honestly I’ve never even thought about going to buy onigiri since I could probably make it myself. The Japanese market in Japantown has some onigiri but I mainly buy the bentos or sushi and skip the onigiri or spaghetti. In terms of tonkatsu, many Japanese restaurants have it as donburi, teishoku, or with curry rice or even as ramen topping so onigiri is not so surprising in the SF area. There seems to be a more curry rice places at least in SF following the sushi and ramen boom. I guess in parts of the US that doesn’t have too many people who have been to Japan, they might just be making things based on what they see in anime or emoji. I might have to try one of the onigiri restaurants to see what it’s like if I see one next time. Fun video and entertaining banter while eating food that is not recommendable.
