I like to clarify that Kamp Amersfoort was indeed a camp for political prisoners, Americans and Jews, but they were not detained by the Dutch government, but by the Nazis during WWII. I don’t think you mentioned that. Before the war it was a Dutch army camp with barracks for the troops and the German occupiers changed it into a concentration camp, forced labor camp and transfer camp.

I remember reading about such acquisitions in "Dutch Girl", a biography of young Audrey Hepburn, who lived in Arnhem during WW2. It also spoke of the fierce Dutch resistance against the Nazis and how the Dutch hid the very same ppl in their homes.

There were also Russians. They were all murdered by the nazis. There is a Russian cemetery where they are burried. My family used to go there on Remembrance Day, for the moment of silence. That was very impressive. The silence starts with the last pose, that always gave me goosebumps. An uncle of mine escaped from kamp Amersfoort

@@blueskygal255 in my family there is this story: my grandmother was hiding people. At a certain moment there was a razzia, and all that people had to go underground. But one of those had to cough. So my mother and her 5 other sister tried to make as much noise as possible. One started with vacuuming, another did a very laud dishwashing, and one of them started to play the harmonium. But she was so nervous that the only thing she could think of, was to play our National anthem. Luckily the Germans searching the house said they feel sorry for my grandma with all that daughters, and went away. According to my mom it was possible they had heard the coughing but didn’t want to do anything. She always said that the Germans weren’t the bad guys, the nazis were. My family was in the resistance, and as a kid I always felt I missed all those adventures they were talking about on family gatherings. They sounded so exiting.

Dear Tracey and Travis, The last ice age ended more than 10,000 years ago. The glaciers provide push moraines (such as the Utrechtse Heuvelrug) and erratic boulder rocks. One of those rocks was towed to Amersfoort in 1661 and gave the city the nickname Keistad. That's why the brewery you visited is called Rock City. If you visit Kamp Amersfoort, you can combine it perfectly with the former airfield Soesterberg, which played an important role during the Cold War when the Americans where stationed at the airfield. Today, that military history can be found in an exciting and interactive way in the beautifully designed National Military Museum. The old runway is now the widest cycle path in the Netherlands!

Great video as always! I'm so happy that you went a little further East this time;-) Amersfoort also has a nice Zoo which is situated just outside the city with lots of nature surrounding it. It's a popular city to live in, because it is so cosy/beautiful, but also due to the easy access to every part of NL. Less overwhelming/busy than Utrecht, but almost just as centrally located. For the first time I don't have a lot to add!😅Hope you have a wonderful week and more visits to the East and North are planned!

I'd definitely recommend you guys to visit the 'Achterhoek' region! It's a beautiful, more rural part of the Netherlands that has a lot to offer :) Mondriaan and his family moved there when he was around 8 years old. You can visit their home (which functions as a museum nowadays), as well as several locations where he painted some of his paintings.

Ah! You've been to my hometown! You are right about The Blueberry. It is 'American-ish'. I'd rather have breakfast at an IHOP or Denny's even though those are chain restaurants. The Blueberry is way too expensive and the portions are getting smaller and smaller while prices surge. You'll need to make more time to see a lot more of Amersfoort. But you've seen the historic center which I think is beautiful.

Johan van Oldenbarnevelt That is his full name. Google that name Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈjoːɦɑɱ vɑn ɔldə(m)ˈbɑrnəvɛlt]), Heer van Berkel en Rodenrijs (1600), Gunterstein (1611) and Bakkum (1613) (14 September 1547 - 13 May 1619) was a Dutch statesman and revolutionary who played an important role in the Dutch struggle for independence from the Habsburg Castilian Empire.

There is a little hill in Amersfoort called ‘het galgenbergje’, little gallow hill. It’s close to road from Utrecht to Amersfoort. I used to play there a lot when I was a kid. People that were executed, because they broke the law, were hang on those gallows until they fell of. As a warning for people, coming into the city, not to break the law. This hill was actually a prehistoric burial mound from long time ago. So beneath our playing foot must have been some skeletons. And I never saw a ghost there, it’s so annoying. These dead persons are so typical Dutch, not to do some creepy stuff. 😠 Your fact about the Neolithic roots triggered this comment
