Hey Sebby, My friends and I are taking a trip to Asia next year and I will be getting either the preferred or the reserve from chase. Would the reserve be worth it if I were getting it just for a year to use the points, perks, and 300$ travel credit on the trip? Anyone else can comment and give advice too. I appreciate it. For reference, I have the Chase freedom card too and will apply for the unlimited at the same time as the reserve/preferred.

For us, the travel insurance that comes with buying airfare with a csr is not good enough. Plus CSR doesn’t cover trips over 60 days and ours are about 150 days. We buy travel insurance that covers high value $500k or more for longer hospital stays and surgeries. But then we are almost 70.Our Medicare Advantage plan covers emergency medical all over the world. So we use Schaub Platinum card for airfare and hotels(booked with AmEx). CSR for all other travel like restaurants, AirBnB, Grab cars, etc. Groceries go on AmEx Blue Preferred in USA. Everyday spend in USA is on CFU . Overseas it goes on CSR. We could use AmEx Platinum but it is not usually accepted for everyday Asia.

I want to thank you so much for your Chase reconsideration video. I was denied for my Chase Freedom Student card, so I called up the number and talked to the guy who works there. Apparently, due to my income being “too high”, they assumed I wasn’t a full time student. It might have also helped that his daughter worked for the same company I do, so he understands why it’s so high for a college student, but needless to say it worked out. After about 25 minutes on the phone, he reran my application and I got approved!

Been using this exact setup for the past year. It works perfectly. 5% on hotel air, 4% on food, 2% on gas. And then I get 2% on all my business purchases which I then transfer to schwab at .0125 per point. I get a ton of cash back and it all goes invested into my portfolio each month

Amex in general is one I'm having a hard time grasping. If you have no use for most of their perks, the cards are really expensive. And while I understand that even without the perks you come out ahead, it's still a big investment up front. This make sense if you have a use for those points ASAP, but if you don't, I don't know if I want to front all that money for a potential redemption at some future time.

Are you suggesting that we apply for the Schwab platinum card after the first full year with the “vanilla” platinum card and then cancel the “vanilla” card?

I don't see why there would be any Tax implications in the future for cashing out points to you Schwab account as long as the points earned required a spend requirement. Referal points will now obviously be taxed.

I have this setup but I am thinking of closing the Platinum because of of the changes to airline credits that will make it much more difficult to capture the airline incidentals credits on this card, Amex gold, and the Hilton aspire... Before, it was easy to get positive value for $550 in credits each year, but I’m not sure if I will be able to next year, especially given that those credits are only usable on a specific airline.

Your coupon analogy doesn't make sense unless you are saying that you can only cash out your points ONE time ever or that the points expire, which isn't the case. Also, it doesn't matter if you do 25% of 100 one time or 25% of 25 four times, it adds up to the same amount of money.

Greeting Sebby! What if I already have the AMEX PLAT and I want to get the Charles Schwab AMEX PLAT? Do I have to cancel the regular PLAT and get the Schwab PLAT? It would be pointless to have both, right? Does having the Schwab PLAT automatically lets me invest through them or do I still need an account with them? Do I first need to open an account with Schwab in order to apply for the AMEX PLAT Schwab? Thanks!

Hi I need advice. My wife is currently a med student and will be traveling a lot for interviews in the winter. Only credit history she has is 2 years with a visa from regions. The Amex signup bonus restriction only applies to Amex-issued cards. Amex network cards like the Schwab Platinum and Wells Fargo Propel don’t prevent you from getting an Amex bonus offer.

I actually was able to get the 100k platinum offer 2 months ago even though I have another Amex and Amex gold card. I used Cardmatch with another address on file and it popped up. And yes, the offer stuck. Hope that helps.
