Awesome review! It look like this bike can be in both Lite and Full power category. Personally, where the bike motor power @ 85-90 Nm is perfect for all around riding. I would prefer the EMTB motor manufacturers invest some R&D on making existing motors more serviceable, durable, and backwards compatible. Maybe provide a rebuilt kit for your dyi mechanics like myself. I want to keep my EMTB for years and it would be nice to just upgrade instead bottle neck to buy latest and greatest when your current emtb is still good to go.

@dtolios Hehe, I'd settle for the 600Wh battery 😅 With a bit of effort I can hang with full fats like the Wild on my Relay, and part of biking is to get a workout, but it'd be fun to have more power on tap if needed...
@dtolios2 ай бұрын
@@YngveSjo I mean, I think everyone would at the end settle for "full or near full" power motors and a relatively low-weight package, more that 90% of which is in the battery...i.e. the Fazua Ride 60 is a 2kg motor, this DJI is like 2.5kg and the Bosch/Shimano equivalents are 2.7kg. As batteries get miniaturized, the weight difference in motors will become less significant, and in all likelihood a slightly larger motor will be able to produce 40 or 60 or w/e NM of torque sucking less juice out of the battery. I believe are mostly already in the region of bikes that just have that "full power" motor, and the "lite" version of the bike is the one with the 450-600Wh internal battery with an option for an extender, - ala Orbea Rise or Giant Trance X Adv E+ - and the full fat one is the one with the 800-1000Wh battery. 1-2lbs here and there are a joke when you have a motor that gives you 3-4 times your own output. The Relay is an excellent bike, but was caught in-between thinking shifts I am afraid. Since it has an externally accessible battery, I wish they will return to offer denser packages in the near future. 600 or larger even should be possible.

A few companies have had issues with this suspension system (yoke, strut-mount): broken or leaking dampers, loosening or breaking bolts. For example Specialized, Orbea, Commencal. Do you think a new brand will succeed with strut-mount suspension? Especially that frame is not stiff.
@lenolenoleno2 ай бұрын
It hasn't been an issue on the latest strut mounted shocks (though this bike has the double whammy of being yoke mounted as well as Trunnion which is also not great from a tolerance standpoint). You'd just have to be more specific about the shocks you use (Float X has a relatively large stanchion so it's no issues, same as an X2 or a Rockshox Super Deluxe or Vivid etc). It's more if you're wanting to use say last gen (and maybe even current gen) Fox DHX2s with narrower shaft diameters etc.
@gdosiu2 ай бұрын
@lenolenoleno True, an air shock is unlikely to break. But in new frame designs with strut-mount suspension systems like on the Orbea Occam, the bolts holding the shock have been known to break. There are cases of shafts being worn down on just one side. If the forces in the suspension are strong enough to break a coil shock, they’re certainly affecting an air shock in the same way. This is definitely not good for the air shock’s durability and reliability. Vorsprung made a good video explaining the issue called 'Dear Bike Industry... Tuesday Tune Ep 34' on KZbin.
@lenolenoleno2 ай бұрын
@gdosiu for sure. Not ideal and requires the frame to be built in a rather narrow range of tolorance (which the bike industry isn't known for). Will be interesting to see long term durability reports of this seemingly open mould bike a year down the track. Big fan of Steve's work over at Vorsprung.

@TheLoamWolf2 ай бұрын
Well, outside of the Boost mode, it's still putting out 105Nm of torque, which beats out Bosch, Shimano, Brose, SRAM, etc... Rocky Mountain's Dyname is the only competitor in terms of power on major brands we see here in North America, and this bike is likely faster than the Rocky. And, with an 800Wh battery, its lighter by a couple pounds, than other bikes on the market with smaller batteries. The drive unit is smaller, quieter and the battery is also slimmer and charges up way faster. There's plenty of things to be excited about from a tech and drive unit perspective. BUT, as we pointed out, the bike isn't perfect.

All that money just so you can go uphill faster without the effort. How sad!

Well, that is one way to look at it. Another argument could be made that it’s the same amount of money as a bike without a motor that lets a rider go downhill three times more. Or that lets a rider venture further into the backcountry away from crowds when shorter time windows are permitted to ride. Just like everything else, this bike is just another tool in many rider’s toolbox.
