Yeah, most killers think they won't get caught. I remember when my pediatrist was arrested for murder. I was too young to understand more than "we are not going to see the kind man in the white coat". Turns out, years later when I ask my parents about that, that he impregnated his secretary despite being married. Instead of owning up to it, he called her for a meeting, killed her and dumped the body in a river or something. He probably would have had to pay alimony to the wife and get divorced. His life would take a hit, but it was more than salvageable. He was good at his job and had a career, instead he killed the woman, the fetus and ended any chance of living free.

This happened to my Dad. After immigrating to the US from Korea in 1977, the rest of his family came. His brother got mixed up with the wrong crowd and became addicted to gambling. He once called my Dad and said he was kidnapped and his captors wanted ransom money. My Dad freaked out and called the LAPD. Come to find out his brother was lying. That was in the 1990s. They became estranged when in 2012 he stole my Dad's car and when my Grandmother was in a coma he told my Dad to increase her life insurance from $10K to $50K.
