Under no circumstances is Jamal Murray a max contract player. MPJ is on a max contract, Joker is max, if you get Murray on a max contract, the Nuggets won't be able to afford a bench. Trade him or let him walk if he wants a max.

Hopefully this new CBA helps with that. NBA teams are too afraid of not giving max contracts to promising young players because they can just walk in free agency and if they match another teams offer, the player just becomes unhappy. Just look at Ayton, no where near worth what his contract is but pheonix had to match to keep him in the team but in the end he's unhappy and got traded. If teams are more warry of giving these ridiculous contracts, then hopefully that should embolden them to let the players hit free agency so the players see how much they are actually worth instead of being entitled to a max.

I don’t think it’s the early childhood training. I think of curry. His dad was an nba player and no doubt taught and pushed his son a ton. Curry was famous for his work ethic, and he was injury prone in the beginning of his career. But many say it was his playstyle. He didn’t use lateral movement as much, he drove hard every time, he landed wrong. Then he changed all that and his injuries went down like crazy. Jamal needs to hire those crazy sports scientist, figure out what he is doing mechanically, fix it and play towards his best strengths

Murray may have a more serious long-term condition like knee arthritis that we don't know about in addition to reported injuries. Something has cost him a step for sure. I'd wait until seeing if he can get back to form before signing it i were nuggets. But their front office has sucked since Tim Connelly left so don't expect smart decisions lol. Losing KCP might prove to be even worse than most people think, he was such a perfect fit for a Jokic lineup on both sides of floor.
@RS-ol8or
@RS-ol8or Ай бұрын
I agreed w your comment until you brougt up Booth & KCP. Any new Mal contract should at minimum include incentives, injury clauses, etc. But the whole KCP thing....look, he was great for Denver...but that whole "Jokic makes everyone around him better" theory isn't a theory at all; it's the gospel truth. Losing KCP will hurt Denver, but they're big on Braun who will prove to be a capable replacement, at least on defense. Shooting? No, not from CB unless that part of his game takes a big leap, but they have Strawther for that. But KCP was exposed in the playoffs by Ant this last year. Ant bullied him constantly. But you know who replaced KCP to guard Ant better? Christian Braun. CB was athletic enough to keep up with Ant and had great lateral quickness. Much better than KCP. And now CB will get even better by playing with the starters and Nikola Jokic next to him. So this next year will prove whether KCP can keep the same numbers and production without Jokic helping him. I highly doubt that happens.
@allphornunn
@allphornunn Ай бұрын
@@RS-ol8or Great points about Braun's emergence, and agree *totally* about Jokic effect on stats - but one thing jumps out at me big time : you're talking about two guys making up for KCP's role all by himself. The whole point was they had both those qualities AND very high court IQ from one man so they could also have Jokic, Gordon, Murray, and Porter on as well. You're replacement idea requires 1 of them not on floor which i think is a downgraded starting lineup - their offense really needs perimeter shooting from that 5th man & lockdown defense, *both*. But, maybe Braun can improve his perimeter shooting enough...i hope so!
@RS-ol8or
@RS-ol8or Ай бұрын
@@allphornunn I hear ya on the two guys thing....I just think Booth realized the CBA was too cost prohibitive to resign KCP. They would of been in the 2nd apron if they did, which meant major penalties. Thus, they went with replacing him by a committee. It could work, potentially. Strawther will have more of a pivotal role this year. And last year, his defense was way better than expected and he flashed promise. Probably won't be as good as CB's D, but if Straw were to improve not only his 3 % but defense too, he could supplant CB.

@LLawliet-tv9ig Ай бұрын
Nuggets gave MPJ the max because of his potential. A 6'10 sniper is a rare commodity in the NBA and MPJ was still young when he signed the max. Their reasoning is probably that MPJ would walk if they didn't hand him the max. Nugget's owner Josh Kroenke also stated that the max contract was given to him before the new CBA was introduced. If you think about it from that perspective, it makes sense. The new CBA was ratified in 04/01/2023. MPJ signed the rookie scale extension way before on 09/29/2021. Another player, Tobias Harris, who happened to be a forward as well, also signed a 5 year max contract in the summer of 2019. So it wasn't out of one's mind that a young player with "potential" could be signed on a near max contract back then. Still, as a Nuggets fan, it's crazy a max contract to given to MPJ especially given his injury history. A more reasonable contract extension would be like a contract similar to what Jaden McDaniels got from the Timberwolves: 5 year 131 mil as opposed to a near 5 year 180 mil for MPJ. Again, this is under the assumption of the new CBA. Wolves already had 3 max players in Gobert, KAT, AND ANT on the roster. There was no way on earth McDaniels is getting anywhere near a max extension last October if he were to stay on the Wolves.

I want to focus on a point here that is totally wrong. Jalen Brunson did not decrease "The Players" money making opportunity, what he did was move some of the money he would get to role players on his team. Basically his friends, because if you have a max like Brunson, that reduces flexibility for other players. However, players, as a group are guaranteed in the CBA to make 51%. This number doesn't move, Lebron could take a minimum deal, it wont matter to the players as a group. However, if star players now are upset Brunson showed what it means to sacrifice for your team to succeed, they can be upset at that. But "the players" are making the same regardless of an individual's decision. Only star players like Brunson are impacted by being compared to Brunson, because that's how great he is. And if he wins a title, yep maybe stars shouldn't take $200m when $130m would be plenty and allow you to bring guys who will win you titles

Hey, if you actually see the games the problem with Murray is that every playoff team was targeting him. They can't stop Joker, so they go for Jamal. That's why Gordon had huge games, is not like he can give you 20 in the playoffs consistently, teams were leaving him open to bother Murray, picking him full court, high doubles and basically wearing him down. And he took it like a champ. Again, no one is stopping Joker, but you have to do something and they just went for Jamal.

Every game I've checked the box score, and Jamal was 8/22, 9/22, 7/20 etc. He has trouble with shoot selection. Second Klay Thomson. The difference is he is still in his prime. However, being poor on defense, he can not contribute in any other way. For example, Lebron can have an awful shooting night, and people will still say he had a good game. Jamal is trying to shoot his way. That's a problem.

Zeke Nnaji is I think the worst contract in the NBA when you compare career performance vs current deal (that includes Ben Simmons cause he was good once). But its even worse becasuse if Nnaji isn't on the team, they can give KCP his 8 million, and 8 million was the difference between his current Orlando deal and what he made last year in the Nuggets, so its not even a raise if they could move Nnaji
@shamsielshahar120

He was always nothing more than role player but playing with Jokic, he sometimes looked like a star. When Jokic use his body to block players Murray can get rebound, when he pass to Jokic he get easy assist, when Jokic pass to him, he get easy buckets. Inflated numbers and i don't hate on him, just saying truth..that hero ball shoting, he's not even above avrage shoter but he's taking them a lot. Nuggets are in trouble with his and MPJs contracts. You got to feel sorry for Joker tho, every super-star has one all-star with him, Luka-Kyrie, Embiid-PG-Maxey, Giannis-Dame, Tattum-Brown, Ant-KAT, Durant-Booker-Beal, LeBron-AD..only he has these bums on max contracts.

Big Denver fan here. This was mostly fair (until you got to the Russ narrative 😜) but here's some thoughts: 1 - Olympic Mal, yeah, he wasn't good at all. But to be fair, that was SGA's team & everything ran through him. Plus, Mal came off the bench & his role just didn't make sense. However, it's valid still that he wasn't good. 2 - There are two camps of Nuggets fans concerning Mal. One believes you can't let him get away & have to give him a supermax; the world will end if he allows to walk after this year. The other isn't happy with his injuries & disappearing act these last playoffs; I happen to fall in that latter group. Murray doesn't deserve a supermax & if the team does extend him, I hope they at least put safeguards in place like incentive-laden clauses, injury exceptions, etc. Would that involve a paycut? Maybe, with the Brunson point you made. But we just don't know what Mal is going to show up for Denver or if he'll get injured again, and the teams success is tied to good guard play next to Jok in the starter 1 spot. 3 - The "theory" that Jokic makes everyone around him better isn't a theory. It's a hard fact. Yet, that doesn't take away from having the necessity of above average guard play from Mal in the 2 man game, or AG's ability to be a swiss army knife, etc. 4 - Denver isn't a contender without Jokic?? No WAY! Come on....every contending team without their star isn't a contender either; it's not just Denver. Would OKC be a contender if they lost SGA for the year? How about Minny losing Ant for the year? Seriously.... 5 - Yeah, Murray's dad overtraining him might of played a part; tied to that is Mal's love of MMA and training w some of those guys. He did that after winning the chip & surprise surprise, came into training camp out of shape and got injured and couldn't shake it all year. Related?? Maybe 6 - Bro...we KNOW you hate Russ, but this is where you're video fell off. Booth envisions Russ to be a Bruce Brown type. Coming off the bench, giving you energy which feeds off the rest of the guys, defense & playmaking. That's all you need! That would be a big DUB for Denver's second unit if that happens. Nobody is expecting Jokic to "fix Russ" or for him to start shooting lights out at 3. There's potential he's at least as effective as BB was, if not even better. Let's be fair with a wait and see approach. 7 - D Fox instead of Murray?? Heck yes, I'd do that trade in a heartbeat. Throw in MPJ, too. "Here ya go, Kings..." This will also be MPJ's last year in Denver to prove us doubters wrong and shoot lights out. I predict if he DOESN'T have a near all star year this year, he's gone at the trade deadline. Zeke too. The Zeke contract is the one that's tied to Booth that left us fans scratching our heads. MPJ's contract was all Tim Connelly who's in MN now, so don't blame Booth for that one. Thank you for reading my dissertation.

Quick add: The team is REALLY big on rookie Trey Alexander, who coincidentally mirrored his game after Murray. Trey was the star of Summer League; kid looks quick, could create his own shots, can play the 1 or 2, and just flat out has an aura about him. Yeah, it's summer league and yeah, he's a rook, but if he continues to ball out look for him to get a few minutes off the bench this year to see if he's for real. I know Denver is most intrigued by him. Hot take: Mal gets traded before the deadline and Trey takes over for him full time next year. Kid's gonna be special.

The new CBA has its benefits as its going to force teams to start thinking a lot smarter with these signings. Too many players have been getting top dollar for average play, and then it takes mountains being moved to get rid of them. Max contracts getting handed out like an Oprah Winfrey special to people whove never been to a championship, selected as an all star, or even started a game.

Jokic got carried by Murray in the 2020/2023 Playoffs. And most Especially in that Utah Series in the 2020 NBA Bubble. Jokic was Taking a piggy back ride, while Murray was having trading 50 Point games with Donovan Mitchell just for Denver to come back down 3-1. Don’t forget about that Game 7 Masterpiece against the Clippers in the 2nd round. Not to mention Murray averaging 32.5 Points a game while doing 50/40/90 Splits against the Lakers in the 2023 WCF. And even played good defense on LeBron on a good chunk of that Series. We saw how bad Denver looked without Murray in 2022.
