Chet Holmgren will not play the upcoming NBA season after tearing ligaments in his feet. The number 2 pick was guarding LeBron James in a summer game when he was injured and it’s bringing up a lot of questions. Despite all the talk, there’s one thing no one will admit about the Thunder player’s injury.

I have a feeling it wouldn't matter if he didn't place defense in the pro-am tournament. It looks like this injury is bound to happen sooner or later. It's just a matter of when and how it happens. Sucks that it happened but better sooner than later and it wasn't so gruesome as some other injuries.

Absolutely this. Too many people want basketball stars to play an uncompetitive style when they aren't on the biggest stages which is quite frankly a scared culture I don't see as being the reason why the game gained such appeal in the first place.

@@ericwolf9664 absolutely I saw him in college and was always focusing on how he jumped and landed. He did the same here as he has always. Lebron bull build wasn’t the cause. It was the awkward landing. Sure it happened with one of the greatest but it could’ve also happened in an amateur pick up game. Moving forward he needs to learn how to land like most NBA players they roll like acrobats to avoid injuries.

Chets been playing almost the entire summer since he played his last NCAA game. He probably wasn't stretching or warming up like he should be. One injury is not something that defines whether a player is a bust in general. However why people should be slightly more concerned about what this means for his future is because it was Lisfranc foot injury. While Achilles, ACL, MCL, PCL Tommy John & even sports hernia injuries aren't the career limiting injuries they once were do to medical advancements Lisfranc injuries are extremely concerning. With Lisfranc injuries there is no speeding up heal or quick recovery. In fact if you dont follow extremely conservative treatment plans the risk of further damage is quite high. Plus Lisfranc injuries can be deadly if bone damage occurs, it can lead to severe infections & blood poisoning. Again depending on the severity & what level of surgery may be needed to fix the issue the intial recovery is tedious because like with some compound fractures stability of the plating requires externa devices that need to be adjusted periodically meaning they are open wounds essentially which come with a greater risk of infection. Plus unlike most injuries Lisfranc setbacks generally mean full reset with an even more conservative treatment approach. The intial post surgery plan means no weight bearing activities of any kind, followed by periods of partial & limited weight bearing activities, so other elements of an athletes game inevitably suffer. With that said while a person can fully recover without question with more serve cases the person's foot is never the same because the repair solution cannot be done without screws & plating remaining for stability which changes how it feels to plant your foot & initiate jumping. I truly wish the kid all the best, a full recovery & doubt this injury will define his career but I am concerned for him. Hopefully with the downtime & period where he won't be able to workout he can put on some gradual weight he later shape into added muscle mass. For anyone interested in a better explanation just search KZbin or Google using Lisfranc injuries & repair to see why recovery is long as well as why these injuries are more severe than other sports injuries. One interesting thing to pay attention with repairs is how the intial injury occurred is important to understanding the damage. In short if the injury occurs because of force trauma like being stepped on can mean a different prognosis than an injury from planting one's foot.

I don't feel it is fair to label a player as a "bust" when they fail out of the NBA due to injuries, unless those injuries were known prior to the draft. I'm specifically thinking of Oden because I recall it being known that his legs were different lengths by like half of an inch so leg issues were expected. But when you have a player like Adam Morrison who never reached his potential (despite showing flashes during his rookie year) because of injuries, its not really fair to label them a bust. I hope Chet returns and has a long, successful career against every team except mine. :p

I agree. I think people use bust to mean a pick that didn't pan out, but it has a derogatory connotation, from players with bad attitudes or no work ethic. I do think there should be a difference from people who's bodies betrayed them, unless, like you said, it was known beforehand.

Yeah, what a player Joel Embiid could have been. Blake Griffen looked so good, but too bad he never got to star in the league. You are falling prey to MULTIPLE cognitive biases/distortions here: “All or nothing thinking” is an obvious one. “NEVER end well” is CLEARLY just a false statement. Another one is the “Availability Heuristic” where you base your entire opinion on a few examples that pop into your brain. “Counting the hits, ignoring the misses.” You are selectively choosing which data points are relevant and ignoring other counterexamples. Knowing cognitive biases can improve your critical thinking, so you’re welcome. There are other bigs who missed their rookie years who just simply didn’t become superstars because of talent/skill, not injury. Julius Randle broke his leg his rookie year… It hasn’t limited him at all. Nerlens Noel had a torn ACL. He’s had a decent career. Zion is one to REALLY look at. Think how much MORE pressure Zion’s feet have on them every time he leaves the ground. Chet has NOWHERE NEAR as much weight bearing down on his feet/ankles. Who knows for sure what will happen with Zion, but modern sports medicine seems to be doing its job, as Zion looks slimmer and ready to return to his dominant form. The safe bet nowadays is to bet on the player who is injured and misses his rookie year to end up having a successful career if the talent/skill live up to the hype.

Yes if its any consolation the foot fractures to Walton big z, and. Yao you referred to are all navicular bone fractures. This is much more severe and worrying than the issue Chet has which will keep him off the court entierly for up to 8 months but long term hopefully doesn't hinder him. My understanding from what has come out so far is Chet has a Lisfranc fracture-dislocation. I would hesitate to sell all my Chet stock and see where we are in a year
@mjwpowerstroke
@mjwpowerstroke 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, plus what nobody is saying is that age 20, Chet may not be fully done growing, or just stopped growing. So these dislocations, fractured can happen easier. When I was 16 and still growing, I dislocated a hip growth plate(iliac crest) in a game, on a fast break, just a random fast break, not much contact. It was the only real injury I ever had in basketball, but if I wasn’t still growing, wouldn’t of ever happened.

Lisfranc injury doesn't have a good prognosis but there are a few cases where the player fully recovers like Jimmy Smith of the Ravens. Haslem was also a player than made a recovery from it.

He went pigeon toed when he planted at the rim and twisted his foot to get it squared back in line with his hips. It was probably the shoe gripping as his foot corrected that stressed the LF to the point of failure.

It's sad to see teams tank but getting a player like Wembanyama could really turn the ream into a contender with the young talent they have. A player like Wombonyomo doesn't come around often so they need to make him a priority. Wembenyamaha is the most skilled big man to come into the league and should become a dominant player early in his career. I would be shocked if teams don't attempt to tank for the chance to draft Wemnenyahoo

Dude has to do some CRAZY working out and conditioning to be able to handle the NBA grind. He appears to have small bones which means he needs to seriously get on a specified training regimen for his ectomorph body type. Otherwise he will be a footnote. Pure talent such as his is NOT enough to really cut it in today's physically demanding NBA game. FACTS!

OKC definitely got greedy with this pick when they should of just took the guy who would guarantee to help out Shai who definitely wants to start winning games. Low key... This injury is a blessing for both Chet and OKC. For Chet he get more time under a NBA staff of conditioning and with a NBA diet and care. This will get him time to work on his lower body strength. Forget about gaining weight. All he need is strength and condition. Being 18 month on a NBA team without playing will do wonders for him. OKC gets a new top 5 pick to keep building up the roster. OKC is gonna be insane for the 2023-24 season

I didn't see it in the first clip (not this video), but with a better angle, yep, I saw the back stutter step injury. I wouldn't call it a slip, but Chet was in such a rush to defend the shot his foot got caught underneath him and he kind of back stuttered step while his body kind of moved in a different direction. If it's his foot, I'm quite sure someone has (or needs to) to get to former Cleveland Cavalier Ilgauskas on the phone. He actually came back from both feet getting injured and played in the league for almost 15 years. His injuries were early and is a legend in Cleveland.

He needs 30 pounds at least….at 7’1 he has to be at least 220…..Comparison to KD are fine…but KD came in around 220 at 6’10.5….and played SG/SF……Chet is 3 inches taller 30 pounds lighter playing the PF/C…….He always had to gain mass. Now he can dedicate more time to lifting. Probably a blessing in disguise to get the injury out of the way and have this whole season and next offseason to heal.

7+ ft players that are drafted should focus their first 1-2 years on development conditioning strength training and weight gain and minimize NBA contact so they can fully grow and be better built when it’s time. May not win rookie of the year but will be good to go by year 3. Examples like Porzingis and Embiid who get injured early and take time to actually get really good
