Fun Fact: Only Kyrie Irving won the Rookie of the Year trophy and then later a championship with the same franchise that drafted him, since Tim Duncan did it in 1998! And yes, LeBron won in Cleveland, after he rejoined them as a free agent. The only ROY to lift a NBA-trophy over the past 10 years was Andrew Wiggins, after he got traded. The ugly truth is: You need to value empty stats and selfish play over efficient basketball in order to win this "race". Which is a media problem, since they should value a rookie, that contributes meaningful and constructive minutes on a Playoff team just as much, as they do 18 points on a 50 loss team.

I think something that doesn't get talked about enough is the way Pop runs his team. No one guy is going to be the go to guy. Pop preaches ball movement and lives by "passing up a good shot for a great shot" so I can see Wemby's scoring numbers not look as flashy as they definitely could be. Just this past season despite the Spurs having their 3rd worst record in franchise history Pop still had that team moving the ball so much that the Spurs were 5th in assists per game which is wild considering a whole lot of G-leaguers and journeyman were suiting up for them

True but how has that worked in the pass years. You need a star to build the offense around. He was fortunate to have 3 stars who can lead an offence and 4 after Kawhi came. If you look at Kawhi’s last Spurs years before injury he was starting to be the “go to guy” type because he was the only one who can control an offence. DJ was still young and the big 3 was old or retiring (TP left). Aldridge was great at offence but could control it. I think Pop will adjust to the new ways, he knows better.

@@HooodClassicsTV Well pop adjusts insanely well, my original point was that guys are not going to be putting up as much shots as they would normally on different teams. Doesn't matter who you are. Aldridge's shot attempts went down from 19 to 14 when he came to San Antonio, Demar has gone on record and said he's become a better passer from his time with the Spurs and the stats show it, he had his best ast numbers all with the Spurs. Who knows if Pop will mix it up and let Wemby shoot as much as he wants, but I don't think he will

I think he was a bit off the mark with the comment about spurs teammates, the key guys left on the roster are team players and fit nicely into roles with the addition of victor wembanyama. I think san antonio is the best possible place to be drafted (for victor specifically) with the exception of OKC.

Victor once battled Chet as a 16yr old and put up 22/8/8 while an 18yr old Chet put up 10/2/2. Scoot and GLI faced Wembanya 10 months ago and Victor put up 37 and 36 in those 2 games along with double digit rebs and at least 5 blocks both games. Just saying.

something about vegas odds people need to always remember is that it’s also affected by projected number of bets, so it’s not only a reflection of how good a player is projected to be. wemby is so hyped that so many people are placing bets on him, thus his odds to “win rookie of the year” is higher, so that the payouts are lower, making the amount of money that the bookies have to pay out smaller as a pool.

If/when Victor leads the league in blocks and gets consideration for the defensive team then you don't have a choice but give him ROTY. That is assuming he remains healthy for at least 65 games. As to Chet, this kid lasted all but 1 exhibition game last year. He is an even bigger injury risk than Victor. Scoot may have the inside track with Portland likely to give him tons of minutes with the impending departure of Dame. At any rate, these 3 will have a lot of memorable battles for a long time.

I don't think he's going to get hurt that often. He'll go through typical sprained ankles and some muscle soreness but the Spurs are going to treat the kid like a first edition Steve Austin collectible. They're going to load manage the kid out of ROTY consideration.

I feel like the race will actually be close. I think Wemby probably won't be as immediately dominant as he's been hyped up to be, and it's looking like it'll be a pretty competitive race due to the strength of the draft class plus Chet. I'm sure he'll end up being great barring major injuries, but I don't think he'll come in and immediately dominate like LeBron.

Dont forget to add Sasha Vesenko, Euroleague MVP to the Mix of ROY candidates. He has to supplant HB in the starting lineup I suspect to have a chance. If he's good enough to do this, his stats are going to be impressive. He needs minutes (about 25 MPG) and reps with Fox and Sabonis, and he'll be right there with the best rookies.

Chet will be featured as much, if not more than Scoot, especially if Lillard is on his team. Chet will be the #2 Guy in scoring in OKC & it's not really a debate about that, but as for Portland, Simons & Grant are both 20+ PPG scorers & Nurk needs the ball too! If you add Dame to this mix, it's not gonna be easy for Scoot to score what Chet can/will do on a nightly basis. Scoot will lead rooks in APG, possibly steals too. But Chet will lead in Points + Blocks & will be close with Wemby in Rebounds. I also believe Chet is best out of these Rookies with the 3 ball and at the FT Line, as only Brandon Miller can possibly beat him in shooting the ball IMO. So, Chet is going to lead rooks in multiple categories & will likely be on the better team out of all of the other big-name rookies. If I had to pick someone today for ROY, it's 50% Chet, 35% Wemby, 14% Scoot, 1% someone else., so Chet would be my choice.
