Perfectly argued! It's happened to me when I was on the basketball court (here in Germany) and played 3 on 3 against players I don't know. Every time when one of them shot the ball from the 3 point line, he shouted "Steph". It is true that Stephen Curry has changed the game and has so much impact how the youth wants to play the game. So I was irritated but found it interesting and made the same and shouted "Steph" (it was stupid to make fun of that, but he was not pissed), when I shot from the 3 point line. I am not sure but possibly it has made something with me and made a couple of 3s in a row :-) . Steph will stay in mind more than LeBron may do for the next 10 or more years.

As a Warriors fan I don't blame Steph for saying he's the best. Obviously Gil asked that to get a buzz worthy reply and he did. However looking at Curry's body of work and what he brings to the table he is definitely top 2 best PGs of all time IMHO. His shooting is otherworldly to the point you got double and triple teams following him so his teammates can shoot an open shot. And that's regardless if he has the ball or not. Also the greatest players of all time have changed the game and evolved it for the better. Magic and Larry made it entertaining in the 80s. Jordan took the game global. And Curry now has gotten 7 foot centers and middle schoolers shooting deep 3s to keep up with his revolution with the warriors. As of right now he has the talent to be the best PG of all time and his legacy is only what's keeping Magic on higher ground. Time will tell but if Curry has another ring, finals MVP, or MVP then his case for GOAT PG could inch closer and closer. Heck we might even say Curry could become 1b to Magic's 1a in the GOAT PG debate.

First of all, I call bs on Curry creating as much as offense as Magic, because his numbers were fairly pedestrian and his playoff success nonexistent before Kerr took over as head coach of the Warriors, so it's Kerr's system that does that. Secondly, Curry provides elite shooting at the cost of being mediocre to a walking mismatch defensively and what strength he brings to the table is not necessary if you have elite scorers at the other positions (MJ, Kobe, Bird etc), which an all-time great time obviously would have. Magic on the other hand provides elite playmaking and passing and there's no reason not to want the ball in his hands, given he's the best and fastest basketball decision maker ever (MJ and Kobe were exceptional as part of the triangle offense, which wasted no movement, Bird works perfectly as a catch and shoot sniper, a big like Kareem can also evidently fit perfectly with Magic, Lebron is useless to an all-time great team to begin with). In fact, if you don't have Magic, there's no other player or combination of other players that can make up for missing out on his skillset, whereas Curry is perfectly replaceable. So it's Magic all day, any day.
@thegame7557 Жыл бұрын
Your assumption is that he cannot play traditional point guard which is not true. Bird was not an elite defender but hustled which Steph does. His teams have had great defensive ratings which would not be possible with a missing link in defense.
@sakdavid Жыл бұрын
@@thegame7557 Well, yes, but Bird was a 6"9-6"10 SF, he was not undersized, and he made three 2nd Teams All-Defense in a basically 8-9 year span of a healthy career, Steph has made none. The Showtime Lakers were 7-9 without Magic in 1984. And earlier, in 1981, the Lakers were only average without Magic until they locked in on defense. But they couldn't have stayed good defensively a whole season. Magic's teams were never built for defense, and that's why they were not anywhere near championship-calibur teams without him. They had offense but no defense at all! Kareem was old! But Magic did something wild for these teams. He ramped up their offense to an even higher level. Their offenses would be so crazy that other teams would get worn out! And that, in turn, made the Lakers' defense look better than what it was! But my point here is that Magic basically carried roughly average teams to 9 championship appearances. The "Showtime Lakers" should not be considered superteams. Kareem was getting older and had no defense. The other players looked really good due to Magic. And if, for some reason, carrying average teams to 9 championships isn't good enough, then consider this: If Magic had been on worse teams, then Magic would have learned to score earlier in his career. And then Magic's GOAT case would be indisputable. Above MJ and Kobe even. He always had the ability. But it wasn't his style. But if he had been forced to score more earlier, then he would have risen to even higher heights. So, you can't punish him for not being on worse teams... if you try, he only looks better. Instead, he is what he is... 5 rings in 9 appearances. Which is unbelieveable. Regarding your argument... yes, Steph has gravity. But you gotta re-watch mid-80's Magic (assuming you've watched some of his finals' wins from the mid-80's). He's a quarterback with the basketball. But regarding your arguments... Magic proved that he was fine with other on-ball stars. That's literally what Kareem was. The difference is that Magic made all the players on his team into elite off-ball stars. If you're an on-ball guy, Magic will turn you into an off-ball guy. I'm not even joking. At his peak, Magic could have made even a LeBron into a route runner (toward the basket, of course... not in circles) that gets the ball at the exact right time. He's that good at quarterbacking a team. So, the question becomes, why would you have Steph as one off-ball guy, when Magic can turn your whole team into off-ball guys? And I know that he's not doing as much when other players actually have the ball... but this is a bit deceptive. The moment players are in trouble, they wheel it around to Magic and he sets something else up that works. In other words, Steph moves and draws players to him. Magic does not move, and draws players away from him... because they are so petrified of his passing. And that's the case both when he has the ball and doesn't have the ball. This makes Magic open even without off ball movement. And when Magic is open, Magic does damage and makes other players "open" out of thin air! But you might counter with this: What if there is a player who absolutely will not move? Wouldn't Steph be better to pair with him? No! Magic proved that when Kareem wouldn't move, Magic would get everyone else to move in order to recieve Magic's passes. And hilariously enough, the effect for Kareem's ability to move in space was identical to Steph's effect on Durant. Just like Curry's movement helped Durant, all of the other players moving to get passes from Magic would really help Kareem. Defenses would be so confused by the time Kareem got the ball, that he was on easy street! Just like Durant! But lastly, someone could say what you tried to say: "What if I have a team full of on-ball guys who really all want to do their own thing?" In that case, just having someone moving around them won't be enough. You'll want a distributor like Magic. And if those guys are also distributors, then the ball will be zipping around so much that teams will just ignore Magic. And that's when he really cooks with both his shooting and passing. Trust me, Magic is the guy you want dishing the ball around. Watch mid-80's Magic again! In the finals! In his wins! It's better than you remember from the last time you watched it! You say that points are more important than assists. This is only true when the player in question is not Magic Johnson! You gotta watch! Also, regarding changing the game, Steph has ZERO comparison to Magic. To begin with, NBA games were tape-delayed before Magic. The nation didn't follow basketball. But Magic and Bird's 1979 college matchup put basketball on the map. And their 80's rivalry then set the stage for Jordan to grab the spotlight. If people weren't already watching the NBA, then Jordan wouldn't have taken off. Magic and Bird literally made the NBA into something people would sit down and watch live. But that's not all. Every kid coming up in the 80's wanted to be Magic Johnson. Seriously! That's why there was a wealth of pass-first point guards like Stockton, Payton, KJ, Price, etc!!! It was a big deal! John Stockton even said that in an interview. He said he and all of his friends wanted to be Magic when they were growing up. They all tried to copy his passes. It could literally be said that NBA passing would have been worse in subsequent generations if it wasn't for Magic Johnson. So, no, Steph has not changed the game like Magic! Best case scenario, they are even!

@@JohnnyYeet123-sf6su In general, you're right, I will put less emphasis on rings obtained via team-hopping because that's what it means to take context into consideration. KD choked a 3-1 lead in the WCF just to join that team the next season, a 73-9 team whose core was capable of winning before him and after he left. Yes he has two rings, but he only did so having two of the greatest shooters of all time on the court with him. The point is, KD is a completely unproven player outside of his years in Golden State so there's no way his a for sure top 15 player of all time. None of the situations you mentioned are at all similar. For example, Wilt won a ring sixers before joining the Lakers, and he demanded a trade for non-basketball related reasons, not to join a superteam. The last time the Lakers won a championship was two decades before he joined. I could understand you argument if Wilt had to join the Celtics to win his rings because that's a lot more analogous to what KD did. Every ring has context that increases or decreases its value, and KD's just don't have as much value as, let's say, Hakeem's.

Great perspective, man! Respect to Steph's ability both on and off the ball, without disrespecting Magic's game. I think Steph deserves more credit than a lot of people want to give him credit for. He and Magic both have different but competitive skillsets to warrant being the point guard on the GOAT team - you could easily make them the point guards of two top teams containing the top ten players of all time and apply players around them to supplement their skill sets. They both played in very different eras and dominated those eras in their own way. I am not going to dock Steph for that or neglect what Magic did either. They are both peak all time point guards and you can build a GOAT team around either one. What I respect around Jordan's list is that he builds a greatest team of all time around himself and his style of play - that is the way we need to frame the GOAT debate.

if you gave me the choice of curry or magic id pick curry before you could even finish that sentence, curry is the greatest offensive talent to ever play, with or without the ball. sure there's guys that need to be guarded at all times but not to the extent that is for curry, once you cross half court curry needs a man in his jersey or else risk him getting a decent look and hitting a 3 from a mile away. magic is great but his meer presence doesn't warp defenses in the same way that curry does, curry's gravity brings all focus on him cause if he has even an inch of space he can and will shoot. He doesn't even need to shoot (or shoot good) for defenses to still prioritize him over anyone else cause of the threat of him catching fire and taking the win. magic does not compare to that in the slightest, again he's great but curry is just on a different level.

Steph's most underrated weapon is his offball. He's more dangerous without the ball than with it because he opens up the floor for the whole team.

I love your narrative. It totally makes sense now. Steph is the GOAT PG

He should’ve said the fans should decide in my opinion I also think he is really close to being the goat point guard but we should wait until he finishes his career When its all set and done he will be the greatest

Magic and Steph are two different kinds of PGs. Magic was the first PG who could defend all 5 players and could lead a great team as a rookie. The Showtime Lakers were more than Kareem and Worthy, they were stacked! Magic ran that team like a conductor. Steph isn't good, he's ridiculous! He was more than taking impossible shots every game. He is a competitor and in the 4th quarter, he is taking the opponent down. In the first championship year, the Warriors were blowing teams out and Steph was relaxing early in the 4th. I can't say one is better than the other due to the way the game was played. I can say this: Steph could win on the Showtime Lakers, but I don't know if Magic could win with the Warriors.
