Earlier this month, the defence ministry signed a contract of over ₹8,000 crore with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for acquisition of 24 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv Mark III for the Indian Army and the Coast Guard. It demonstrates another significant push in the government's quest for self-reliance in defence. It also shows renewed confidence in the capabilities of HAL which is also making the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark IA. As a manufacturing man for all life now at 85, I suggest HAL must debottleneck its manufacturing operations with cutting-edge technologies and management practices to give timely delivery of fighters and helicopters on order and keep India flag flying high in sectors it serves. Wonderful episode, Nitinji! Coming to the export part, I firmly feel that the Tejas has to stabilize and mature as a platform in the IAF first, with respect to its avionics , engine and weapons systems, before we venture for exports. What is interesting is the perception of third countries regarding the IAFs own reluctant acceptance of the Tejas as a viable fighter aircraft and secondly, HAL's production and technological capacity to cater to export orders when internal (read: IAF) demand can be barely met. In my view, HAL has not only to overcome these perceptions but also assure it's potential customers about its existing capabilities and future plans.

They need to move faster. Currently they are protected by Indian govt contracts and R&D funds and being a monopoly in the aviation sector. But if they had to compete globally on their own, they would be hard pressed. They need to step up fast.

Government politician came design jet, worked in production, solved all problems, upgraded technology, Government or IAF pending 20000cr rupees to HAL, IAF never paid ontime, Other customers are happy with HAL, they want jointly produce material... Who are paid amount they are getting material on-time, without money no honey, Few years back, HAL don't have amount to pay salary, they took loan by bank, Bank given loan only seeing pending amount from IAF, it's 1000cr, HAL Profit is 19000cr.... Government done lot's of delay, in recent projects also, TEJES MK2, TEDBF, AMCA, CARGO JET, TRAINER JET, HELICOPTER, medium and heavy catagory approval pending, Even infront media they say we approved, fund will receive after a year.....

We need to have advanced avionics and armament ,it is simply who is able to detect enemy first and have the ability to down the enemy aircraft - you have adversary China with well done homework on each known fighting platform of India ,infrastructure kill,strategies of past,present and future and heavily reliant on niche technology ; so we should pursue programme like Tejas but we desperately need much superior fighter in numbers its armament with technology transfer and dedicated institute to produce skilled manpower then be it with SAAB Gripen or American,European fighter with no string attached for usage; besides others equipment procurement looking with hope
