I always took this to be the defining moment for the series. You are at exactly the halfway point between being the beast from Beast I to becoming the compassionate human in Beast III. This action was necessary for survival but will weigh on the character's conscience forever. The moral consequence of this choice is the Shadow of the Beast. Questioning the morality by you, the player, marks the transition of the character from beast to man.

All the effort Reflections went to with the sound and visuals which were exceptional for their time and yet they couldn't even be bothered to make a decent end sequence! Watching this longplay brought back a lot of "oh yeah, I remember that!" moments, I think this player completed it quicker than I did with the TEN PINTS cheat LOL
@jammerc6410 жыл бұрын
Agree. I don't remember many games that had game over sequence so much better than ending.
@Nicholas_Steel10 жыл бұрын
jammerc64 Extremely likely because game cartridges were exceptionally small in data capacity back then (Cram the gameplay in, everything else is optional), it wasn't until towards the end of the NES life that cartridges up to 1MB or so became cheap enough for mass production for video games. SNES featured cartridges up to around 4 or 8MB I believe, N64 had only a handful of games use the largest 512Mb cartridge (64MB) and then everyone transitioned to CD's.

I'd still say that SOTB II is the hardest game I've ever played, even to this day. I feared this game as a kid. SOTB II had a very creepy and palpable atmosphere like no other game. It boasted an unforgettable intro sequence & amazing graphics but the developers put no thought into the actual gameplay. The gameplay had many pitfalls: vague clues for ensuing puzzles, traps that if done incorrectly the game was over, no save points & you only had one life. ....two words: ten pints.

Great that people still share these cool games. You happen to remember what was the game (adventure game if I recall correctly) that started from a small stone house and you were locked into this small room, and there was some sort of ogre that was living in that house. You had to get out from the room and then something... damn can't remember much..

Silver Surfer is pretty easy actually. It's super punishing until you get used to it and build up some firepower, but then you can breeze through for a while until you die and lose your upgrades again. Several years ago I purchased and played it as an act of reverence to Tim and Geoff Follin, and although I thought it was hard at first, two hours later I had finished it, during my first and thus far only session with it. Battletoads, on the other hand, I have never finished. I couldn't as a kid; I came back as an adult and still couldn't. But I did get further in it than I ever could in Shadow of the Beast II...

Just managed to complete this with cheats and save states and it was STILL hard. The bit with the dog monster thing was tricky to judge jump wise and the goblin underground cavern was nuts, can't imagine how many Amigas I would have destroyed if I played this through legit, you have more dedication than I do! It's still a great game but there are just too many areas where if you do even one thing slightly wrong you simply cannot win the game. That intro though :)

@sasfcps Not worse, it just used the hardware differently. Beast 1's infamous multi-parallax effect was limited in that you could only move left and right - the tree cavern and castle levels were loaded separately with 1 parallax layer. Beast 2 they tried to make more seamless (note how the rear parallax layer scrolls in both axes), but it meant that the parallax layer was restricted to 2 colours. By Beast 3 they'd figured out a way of doing Beast 2's scrolling with Beast 1's parallax effect.
