Picture it: South Beach, 1992. A young 22-year-old gay man goes to his very first tea dance/street party at the world-famous Warsaw nightclub. He is surprised that the entire street is closed off and decorated. At one end, in front of the beach, is an empty large freight container, the kind usually hooked to large trucks on the highway. On top of that container, three drag queens are doing their thing. This song comes on, and the entire crowd goes wild. Looking up, that young man sees all three drag queens drop to their knees and bang on the container to give the effect of the same thunder the singer is emoting to. That memory still sticks with me to this day.

This is straight up disco, up there with "Pop Muzik", "Born to be Alive", and many others. There's an extended 12" version that is relentless, if you were out on the dance floor for the whole thing you'd come back drenched in sweat. You could play all the really good songs one after the other and you wouldn't run out of music for at least a couple of weeks. People don't realize how many songs we danced to back then. For a good transitional song, check out MARRS "Pump Up The Volume". The workouts you're thinking about were an 80's trend, with the leg warmers, for aerobics classes. Olivia Newton-John had a popular song called "Physical".

@WilAdams 3 жыл бұрын
While known for this song, and the follow up Light My Fire/137 (Disco Heaven), Amii also released a couple of other songs that while good (Jealousy) that did not hit the charts but which got huge Disco play. One thing about actual Disco was that most of the songs (Euro-Disco, which was the best) were not about the singers (USA-EUROPEAN CONNECTION--Come Into My Heart/Good Lovin'--Voyage--From East to West/Souvenirs--Cerrone--Supernature/Give Me Love) but were about the instrumentation. While there were lyrics (Supernature is full of them) it was still the musical breaks that made Disco what Disco was. I have watched a couple of your videos (Enough is Enough--Donna Summer/Barbra S. for example) but to really appreciate Disco you must move away from USA Disco (repetitive) and check out Euro-Disco look for songs over 6 minutes for the best versions. Machine--There But For the Grace of God is a German disco super hit. It failed in the US because Gays thought the words were homophobic. The truth is that the words actually supported the gay lifestyle. 'Let's find a place that's safe. Somewhere far away, with no black, no jews and no gays. There but for the Grace of God Go I. See. The singer is saying If God had not made me less stupid than those who hate just for the sake of hate, I would feel the same.

You should hear the extended album version. The instrumental mid section is outstanding, and more vocals from Amii with a brilliant fade out. Here’s the You-Tube link - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWqYoYd5ecd8gJo The version you reviewed is the single edit. She also had two other hits Light My Fire/137 Disco Heaven and Jealously. I have her first two albums on Vinyl and unofficial CDs, but outstanding audio from the original master tapes. The Phil Collins song you mentioned is actually ‘In The Air Tonight’ from 1981.
