secondary Amine is greater base than tertiary amine plz correct it. It doesn't mean I criticize you but i want that other students may not misunderstand this.

How? Can u please explain

@@101nevergiveup they are not, they have less alkyl groups so less electron donation to N, so lower electron density
@chemistry.student4 ай бұрын
That is only true if you include steric hinderance and solvation factors. At this level (A-level and IB Chemistry) these aren't considered and we treat the amines as though they are in gas phase only, meaning a simpler model that would mean the basicity is determined by inductive effect of alkyl groups. Giving the order proposed in the video :) Hope that helps.

I was trying to understand why normorphine is more polar than morphine. Normorphine has a secondary amine while morphine has a tertiary amine. Tertiary amine is more basic than a secondary amine as said in the video. So, I thought morphine is more polar than normorphine. I am confused. Can you help me

Can we say that a more basic amine is more polar?
@chemistry.student3 ай бұрын
Great question! Basicity and polarity are related to different properties of a molecule, so while a more basic amine might have a higher polarity than a less basic amine, we can't say that a more basic amine is always more polar. Commonly, a more basic amine may be slightly more polar because the electron-donating groups that increase basicity also increase the electron density on the nitrogen, leading to a stronger dipole. But it's important to remember that other factors, like molecular shape and the nature of the surrounding groups, can also affect polarity. So, while there can be a link between basicity and polarity, they aren't the same, and one doesn't necessarily imply the other. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!

@@chemistry.student hi professor! I do have a question that makes me confused that I would like to ask to you. Why do halogens make molecules lipophilic?
