Review of Biological Chemistry, including Amino Acids and Proteins. Reference is made to the globular structure of the protein, denaturation back into a polypeptide chain, structure of amino acids, essential and non-essential amino acids. Lecture includes the role of proteins as enzymes and what coenzymes and enzyme inhibitors are (including the action of a number of drugs). Lecture also covers protein hormones (& contrasts them with steroid hormones), including insulin, growth hormone & oxytocin, and the role of antibodies (Immunoglobulins).

I think that the analogy between a chain of amino acids and writing a sentence is a great example of understanding how a protein structure looks like!!!

Dear professor Fink I'm super fan of you and already get enriched by your teaching, but I have a comment on a statement you mentioned in the lecture regarding the cyanide poisoning antidote that there is no an antidote, buyer what about the known antidote hydroxcoblamine

I have heard from other research doctors that dietary cholesterol is NOT absorbed directly and in fact can't be. Time mark 32: Also some oral ingestion can be made through absorption into the mouth tissue, right, making the choice of absorption paths greater than oral or injection. i.e dermal, transdermal patches etc. which bring into play the oral sprays that are to be held in the mouth and not swallowed (micronutrients (minerals)).

Dear Professor fink! I have a question regarding cyanide. If I'm correct, cyanide is found in cigarette. Then how about people who inhale this substance through smoking? Why does it only have a long term affect on their bodies? Thank you

some of enzyme inhibitors are so important to us like aceylcholine sterase found in the post synaptic neurons they do inhibit when acetylcholine ends its work, if they didn't, non inhibited acetylcholine can couse frequense samation or un wanted movement and the person will do jerk proffesor.

Hi professor I have a question you said that protein hormones can not be taken orally so what about thyroxine ?!!!!!
@professorfink
@professorfink 5 жыл бұрын
Good Question. Thyroxin is not a protein ("polypeptide") hormone, but actually a modified amino acid (the amino acid tyrosine with attached iodine). So, it is not digested further, but absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Thus, it can be taken orally.

If heat denatures protein, then how are we all alive from cooking our meats?
@professorfink
@professorfink 4 жыл бұрын
The proteins (in your food) are going to be digested into individual amino acids (so it doesn't matter if the proteins uncoil ("denature"). HOWEVER, you don't want the proteins in your own body to uncoil & stop working.
