Thanks so much for this video. I immediately purchased two copies. One for me & my husband. One for our 82 year old horse mentor who has taken us under his wing while learning to farm with horses & been dear friends with an Amish community for decades. I laughed and cried during the entire book. Cannot wait to read the rest of the series.

These are called Belgian work horses. They are used for plowing. They have small hooves with pointier toes. Their hooves sink into the soft, soft field soil for good footing. The other type of work horse is the draft horse. Draft horses have very large, wide, circular hooves. Their hooves are easy on the road and give good traction on flat surfaces.

Neat facts! But these horses aren’t Belgians. They are percherons. It says so in the description.

@What’s Up Correct. I have edited. I simply meant the tip, the toe, of the hoof. One can think that they have four toes, one on each hoof. Each hoof has a toe.

@@MrvuMrv Percherons have hoofs sized in between Belgians and draft horses. Percherons are meant for pasture riding, packing, logging, not plowing. Percherons are known for use in war. At 20:16 I can see they have Percheron hoofs. Sorry, my mistake. I assumed they were Belgians because they were used for plowing. It is nice that you have them.

@@myeflatley1150 Thank you for your comments. Percherons are actually quite versatile, they are used very commonly on Amish farms for plowing and other heavy work. They are very comparable to Belgians.

We always plowed the garden with a big draft horse named Tops.

I started plowing with mules and horses when I was about 10 years old. I'm 60 now and have to use a tractor, unfortunately.
