अमिता देशपांडे यांनी, 'री चरखा' - The EcoSocial Tribe (री चरखा) आणि My EcoSocial Planet ची स्थापना केली.
आयटी अभियांत्रिकी क्षेत्रातील पदवी मिळवल्यानंतर अमिता यांनी पुढे जाऊन पर्यावरणाभिमुख विकासावर लक्ष केंद्रित केले. अमेरिकेतील Purdue University मधून पदव्युत्तर शिक्षण पूर्ण केले. शिक्षणासोबत त्यांनी अनेक कंपन्यांमध्ये काम करत तिथल्या अनुभवाचा प्रत्यक्ष वापर करण्यासाठी भारतात परतल्या.
'री चरखा' ही एक सामाजिक उद्योग संस्था आहे. ही संस्था पारंपरिक चरखा आणि हातमाग यांचा वापर करून पुनर्वापर (Upcycling) करण्यायोग्य नसलेल्या प्लास्टिक कचऱ्याचे पुनर्निर्मितीकरण (Upcycling) करण्याचे काम करते. या प्रक्रियेद्वारे री चरखा आदिवासी आणि ग्रामीण महिलांना, तरुणांना रोजगाराची संधी उपलब्ध करून देते. या उपक्रमाद्वारे 'इकोसोशल प्लॅनेट' (पर्यावरणस्नेही आणि सामाजिकदृष्ट्या संवेदनशील जग) विकसित करण्याचा त्यांचा प्रयत्न आहे.
