I'm just surprised that the bank teller and his manager charged her the fees, she may have agreed to pay for a card but i think you could argue the card should be legible. Tipping story: I’d say OP’s friend is slightly being a jerk here. No, they don’t have to tip, and servers shouldn’t be expecting tips all the time, but it’s also kind of rude and unnecessary for them to keep loudly announcing that they aren’t going to tip. In my opinion they can stick to their word and not tip but they can also keep that to themselves. If OP is embarrassed by this they could probably talk to their friend or find someone else to eat with.

12:21 Unpopular opinion here. But we’ve turned into a society we’re tips are being expected for EVERYTHING. It’s at a point where a mall massage kiosk place literally demands tips. It’s one of those 10 min for $10 or 20 min for $20 & they don’t expect a 15-20% tip, no they expect at the very least 50% tip. When you don’t tip, they demand to know why. Although tips are to insure prompt service, a gratitude for great service. I will ALWAYS tip at the very least 10% (VERY rarely is it ever that small). 9/10 times I tip 20% bc the wait staff was pleasant & did the best they could (even if something went wrong, as long as they did their best, I tip 20%). I even tip 20% when I call for take out, unless they are rude, short & piss me off. Then I won’t but that’s only happened maybe once or twice in the last 5 years 😂.

Tipping story: tipping is not mandatory. If the friend doesnt want to tip then that is their choice. It is known that tips are *not mandatory* so people relying on tips are really playing it risky. As for OP, if they are concerned with social perception then thats fine. But it is on *them* to then go to the places that are tip free.

Story 3 - If you are someone who expects a tip, You are the problem. Tipping is ALWAYS OPTIONAL. Wether or not there's a tip and the amount is COMPLETELY at the individual customer's discretion. Do Not just expect a tip. You do not just deserve a tip, you have to earn it. There are some people that just don't tip. And you have no choice but to just accept it and move on. Its not that important.

Story 1: Some people just dont know how to listen. There are two great phrases that should've been used and reminded here; "Right To Refuse Service" and "Terms Of Service". She wants to threaten t close down her account? Fine, let her, then you dont have to deal with her ever again. I'd say that would've been a win. As for all the fees, this is 100% that Karen's fault here. Every new card that was printed and she rejected costs money and that is totally on her... and she signed the forms. Once you sign them, thats it. You agree to everything on those forms/papers. At least the manager and customer service were on the OP's side here through all of this. Story 2: OP is not a jerk at all here, and i think that the mom is the bigger jerk between her and the aunt. Considering there were previous issues between the OP and the aunt... it still seemed odd to me that the OP would invite her in the first place. Also, the OP made it very clear that only the aunt could come, not the rest of the family, so why the mom felt the need to pressure the OP here and then cause a scene afterwards was just crap. While the aunt is a smug jerk through all of this, i say the mom takes the jerk award here. Story 3: Okay, regardless of how you feel about tipping, the OP really shouldn't be going out to dinners with this friend if this is their attitude. Its one thing to tip or not to tip, but having this attitude isn't right. Also, where exactly is $15 a livable wage? Story 4: Absolutely not the jerk here... not even close. Stuff like this is by no means a "mistake", he's totally doing this on purpose and apparently has had no consequences over all this. Until the nephew smartens up and apologizes, the ban is 100% justified here. Story 5: While i can see things from both sides here, i say not the jerk here. Those still are your seats that you paid for, even if it is for your baby. I dont think giving up the seat here would've been a big deal, but the OP wasn't a jerk here. Story 6: OP is not a jerk here. Sally really seems a quite entitled here. While i can understand that she can't control her allergies, but the OP isn't obligated to find a job for her. Its good that Emma can take care of the dogs here for the OP, but Sally has no reason to be sulking around here. I think things would've been different if Sally had asked the OP if she knew anyone that was hiring for something, but not be a whiny Karen about it.

Nah, they easy NTA. They did make it clear in the documents the woman signed, and it’s not actually that reasonable when your own wallet or purse will start to rub off all 16 digits within a few months. Specially since it’s not like anyone could control this. They simply returned her the same kindness she was giving them, that’s perfectly reasonable to do. Hell, they even stated that the manager would waive the original fee if she had been polite about it. Just as simple of you get treated by others exactly how you treated them

For the tipping story: The friend isn't a jerk for not tipping. Tip culture has gone crazy and restaurants need to pay their people a living wage (no $15 isn't a living wage in a city). However, OPs friend IS a jerk for loudly announcing their opinion in the restaurant in front of the servers. It's rude and demeaning.
@ChildofPluto24

America is one of the few countries that have a tipping culture whereas other places don’t. If we gave livable wages to employees, we wouldn’t need such a big tipping culture plus not everyone has the money to tip in the first place. So the friend isn’t a jerk for not wanting to tip but I do agree that they didn’t need to declare it so loudly and assume things, plus hiding in the bathroom? Just why?

As a former foodservice employee who actually only made $8.00 an hour, I never expected tips because minimum wage where I live is $7.25 and it is a livable wage. Anyone who says otherwise does not know how to budget. Don't get me wrong, If I were paid the paltry sum tipped employees usually make, you bet your ass I would be demanding tips. But as long as you make standard minimum or higher, you need to manage your finances accordingly.

I agree that minimum wage pre-tip should be a liveable wage, but that is unfortunately not the reality for many if not most tipped employees. Also, depending on where you live (and there are indeed people stuck in expensive cities with no viable way to leave), $15 an hour may not be a liveable wage unless you call living out of your car or couch surfing "liveable", as even the lowest rent would wipe that income out and leave not enough for even the most basic living expenses. Also, take into account the Samuel Vimes "boots theory" of economic disparity--those who have never had the chance to save (or who have had their savings wiped out), and who are living paycheck to paycheck, will face higher expenses over time because they have no reserve to dip into for larger expenses, and therefore must shop on price alone rather than value.

I'm committing on the air plane story. The Original poster was not a jerk but the one committing was. First he assumed the "old guy" didn't plan ahead. As you get older your body breaks down much faster than when you are young. If he had broken his leg the week of the flight and was in incredible pain, would he not want the Stewart to help him find somewhere more comfortable? Second, it was the stewardess who was a jerk. When shown they had purchased the seat for the child, that should have been the end of the story. This is where valuing each human is important. If we discount young, old or others we devalue them. Instead of snap judgment we need to consider the full content, situation and the person's involved. Show compassion to each other and the world will be a better place.
