Story 1: I'll be honest. OP sounds amazing. Cheating is sometimes a power play, and what shocked her the most was his attitude. It worked like an Uno reverse card. I remember a story where the guy acted like normal after he caught his gf cheating with another guy on his bed, he was like "Dont worry babe. I just came to get some things. You two have fun." Then left and she was like WTF. He didn't even ghost her. They saw each other at gatherings and stuff. She was so shocked that she begged him to talk about it, kinda like wishing he fought her or something. She freaked out so much because of that that ultimately she ended herself. Like, she couldn't accept he didn't love her enough to fight for her or at least be mad for her betrayal.

Last story sounded like managers at a cinema I used to work at - or rather the last 5 years (after management changed into the school bully clique). You try to phone in sick, they would threaten you with disciplinary actions (hinting that you would be unemployed, and that they will make sure no-one will ever hire you) so you are forced to come into work while ill. Then they would put you on food areas, ignoring that you even look ill - only to get angry with you for "putting customers at risk".

Story 1: OP is not the jerk at all. When you find out your SO is cheating on you, nihilist or not, some people just go completely numb. No tears, no anger, nothing. I can understand the OP's reaction... especially since ive been cheated on before. By the same token, i cannot understand why the wife (and other people) would then immediately try and accuse the other of cheating as some kind of justification, and why anyone would want to try and take her side on this. Those "friends" are nothing of the sort and OP can do much better then them. Good thing he had security cameras as well, it probably made the divorce easier. The ex probably just misses the OP's money rather then missing the OP himself.. since he mentioned he was rich. OP really needs to go zero contact with the ex-wife and friends, they clearly dont care about the OP at all, especially the ones who hired PI's on the OP. Story 2: Always bad management that has to ruin it. You should NEVER tell a worker to "quit if you dont like it". With the way the world is, people arent putting up with people's crap too. Kind of funny that John ended up going from the GM of a store to a bank teller. Story 3: The restaurant mentality of "you better show up unless you're in ICU, jail or dead" really needs to go away, especially after Covid. I get that time is money and people need to work and make money, but if you are truly sick, stay away from the kitchen. Ive seen it so many times over the last 20+ years its pretty sad.

So, for everyone's knowledge and OP's knowledge, in the first story not only is he not the jerk, I know what it is that makes him think he's broken. (Long read ahead) OP is what is known as a High Functioning Sociopath, with what appears to be an extremely high Emotional IQ, higher than most non-Sociopaths. To clarify, don't take TV's interpretation of Sociopathy, there's a great many good and hardworking people with it. They are very aware from a young age that their lack of connections, and depending on the individual sometimes a deadening of most emotions, and most of them do everything they can to determine how to fit into society. They're not these crazed murderers TV says they are, they're not these people who intentionally manipulate others to get into positions of power, they're not sitting around thinking how they want to hurt people. Common folk may feel a little weirded out by finding out someone they love has no connection to them, not in the same way a Non-Sociopath would, and it unfortunately makes them feel like they're being used for some sort of gain. Truthfully, let me say that if a Sociopath has chosen to be your friend, and they feel they have no emotional connection to you, that means they have found something other than pure emotional attachment to keep you around. They may not feel what you do, but that doesn't make their desires less valid or more manipulative than anyone else. The fact that OP goes out of his way to be a good friend, husband, son, coworker, etcetera, is because even though he doesn't feel the emotional connection, he WANTS to be those things. Not perceived as them, BE them. To him it might be mainly because it's easier to fit into society that way, but he doesn't half-ass it like many Non-Sociopaths do. He is good to his parents, he is good to his friends, he was amazing with his wife! I believe every word he says when it comes to being as good as he was, because it is a statistical fact that Sociopaths have less penchant for lying, even when the truth is going to paint them in a bad light, because they don't feel the shame or social need to remain in good standing. He openly committed faux pas at the party, at least in the Sociopath handbook. He flat-out let his mask come off, instead of reacting to it and keeping in-character (So to speak) he allowed himself to be himself. It caused many of their friends to look at him unfavorably, to dislike him for a long time. He didn't fight for his pride or to keep his good name, he allowed them to believe whatever they wanted because he truly didn't care. That is who he is, so the fact he believes he treated her well I believe it, at the same time it's obvious by how he talks that he doesn't get it, why she cheated on him. He might understand that some have the desire to cheat, but he doesn't understand the drive of it. The man can't even say "No" when a person shows up at his place to basically force him to this party. He has no concept of saying "No" when his ex tries to talk to him twice just because he doesn't want to be rude. He is very aware of other people, to the point he's almost treated himself as an NPC to give people the best that he can. It's not creepy, it IS methodical, he is just trying to fit in and be what he's perceived as the best version of himself with other people. His best version, a disconnected personality, is better than a great many "Socially Average" people.

You sure it's sociopathy and not psychopathy? I've always been taught sociopathy is more unhinged - they still can feel some emotions, especially anger. They're more impulsive. They're also made instead of born (environmental instead of genetic). OP sounds more like psychopathy, with the complete inability to feel emotion or empathy, but still taught himself to pretend. Fully in control of himself even in high-stress situations, very self aware. But completely detached emotionally.

Most of the time, therapy is there to help the patient with understanding emotions and how to react to it. But I would say that having the assessement and putting a name on his condition could be comforting compared to just saying there's something wrong with him. Mental condition is just as serious a handicap as physical handicaps. And I know people with physical handicaps who felt better once the handicap was diagnosed rather than thinking there's just something wrong and they're not putting enough efforts into things. I would guess it is somewhat similar with mental conditions, having the diagnosis might help him realize his condition was out of his control and he did as much as he could with said condition

The first OP's level of stoicism is alarming, perhaps he has symptoms of psychopathy. It would be good to have a checkup with a psychologist just to be sure.

1st story op sounds like a sociopath, like not the internet slang sociopath, like the textbook diagnosis of a sociopath, they typically can’t feel emotions and most of them put on a ‘face’ of the emotion they want to express

First story: The OP is possibly a narcissist or sociopath. That doesn't always mean a bad thing, it's just someone who is unable to feel genuine emotion towards others. They don't know how to feel love or react to things the way others do. This is probably why he studied psychology at such a young age, to understand how he's supposed to react in social situations. NTA, he's responding in the only way he knows how.

Tbh I don't think he's a sociopath/psychopath I think it's just that he's hyper aware of logical futility of emotions other than being used as a tool for communication, often people can go through life like robots and when they finally understand that emotional response internally / recognize it they can unload years and years of pent up emotions, it can be caused by suppression at a young age.

Story 1: OP is not in the wrong there. He just doesn't feel emotion. I don't condone what the ex-wife did, but I do get the idea behind it. The OP doesn't feel emotion, so he also doesn't feel love and while he might act the right way there is no love there. He's acting like it was his job to love his ex-wife regardless if he liked it or not. So she, who might be rightfully be missing that love, sought it somewhere else to either get that love it or elicite an emotion from OP. The best course of action would have been that the wife should have gotten a divorce instead of all the drama she created.

First story, OP is probably a sociopath. Not like crazy or anything. Just the lack of connection to people. Not all sociopaths go on killing sprees. Some just try to live normal lives.

As someone who has taken psych 1 and socialagy the guy from story 3 sounds like a text book psychopath and sociopath. Psychopaths are incapable of feeling normal emotions. What people don’t relieze is that people with psychopathy are aware of that fact and most of them try and mask it well. One of the reasons why masking it is easy is because lying and manipulation is easy. It’s much easer to lie and memipolate people you don’t care about. And if your like this person you don’t care about anyone. It sounds like some form of antisocial personality disorder

I'm gonna quickly say that I don't think OP is a high-functioning sociopath. I think he could just have apathetic depression which can present as ASPD but is very differant. I think the final parts of his post demonstrate this because as someone who has had apathetic depression and has done a lot of actual nitty gritty research into ASPD, the acheing guilt that becomes all consuming and the detatchment from everyone around you for years on end is more fitting with the latter than the former.

I’m single and I hate it. I’ve had 2 Girlfriends, the first one I broke up with because my family thought she was using me as an escape route. Although my first Ex Girlfriend and I are still on good terms as friends. My Second Ex Girlfriend was a manipulative Slut who just wanted me to knock her up and she was so toxic to the point that when I was on a vacation with my family she tried to guilt me into coming home early because she “Didn’t want to spend Easter Alone.” I dumped her before I got back from the cruise I was on with my Family. I haven’t been in a relationship since then.
