AMK 1/48 Mig-31BS - Part One THE REPAINT

Hello there - got any shelf of doom projects you want to get back to? I've sat on this Mig-31 for over two years and have finally got up the courage to repaint it and finish it!
In this video, I'll go over a variation of the black basing technique, using brown instead, and apply numerous shades of grey to get a really interesting, stylized finish.
In Part 2, I'll finish off the Mig with weathering and detail painting of the missiles and nozzles.

nice, those yellowish brown base definately works, and green and blue shading is a really good touch, saved for future reference

Many thanks Ken, yeah the whole point of resurrecting this build to repaint it is because I have somewhat of an obsession with naval aviation - F-14's leading the pack and so I will using these techniques on weathering them (and my CH-53E and A-6 and and ...). I enjoyed listening to your modelling philosophy. One day our hobby may become of interest to academia, and then students will seek out the great thinkers amongst us. They will study our comments for insight and erudition. As for me, I suggest Academy 1/72 scale for beginners. They're inexpensive and easy to assemble, without being too simple, like the Italeri wargames range. Great rant.

Just black based my Hasa Super Hornet and it's about to get a brown base and a whole lot of greys etc. Thanks man inspired me to try this method.

Give it a go - I reckon naval subjects are perfect for brown/black basing. I'll be doing it on my next F-14 (and CH-53 and MV-22 and and and) for sure! Don't be afraid to add some really out there tones like blue, or yellow - or put red underneath anything very dark grey/black. Cheers, Chris

Very well done. I’ve started to do marbling too and I never thought of incorporating “clear” colours. But thinking about this now, it makes sense to add more layers under main coat with clears. Great idea. Looking forward to the next one!

Of much INTRAST as I have this kit, interesting variation technique. I've seen a few use the clear greens and blues and even yellow to post effect the main coat....

@@beckersmodels by the way... here, in RU we have one more type of condition, let's call it "the day before Mr. Putin or Minister of Defence arrives with inspection", literally everything shines like a diamond, grass painted in green or (depends of a season) snow in white... ))))) yes, it's partly a joke, but this tradition goes from USSR times and shows to the bosses that everything is fine )))))

Very nice. I have this kit in the stash and looking forward to using these colors and techniques. How long after the last coat before you start chipping/streaking? Is the last blend coat mottled on or light mist over the entire surface?

Hi Paul, I would start the chipping/streaking straight away, since its lacquers - they dry nearly instantly. The last blend coat is normally misted over, but I did miss some bits to keep the contrast up more than usual. Cheers, Chris

Would black basing with gloss black primer make any difference, because the only black I have

Yep the black will make the greys appear much cooler - you can use any browns over a black coat if you wanted - I covered the unpainted but black primed outer wings with the brown on the Mig. Cheers, Chris

what dilution you use 1:1 for tamiya? and air presure?

Hi Giorgos, good question - I generally use a 70/30 or 60/40 thinner/paint mix with Mr Levelling Thinner when I marble paint in Tamiya XF paints. I sometimes thin the MRP too, just with a drop of thinner, but usually its fine out of the bottle. Air pressure is 20PSI or so, I was airbrushing in high humidity and temperature (almost always above 30C). Hope that helps, Chris.

Good question again! And good timing, because I will have a video up this Friday/Saturday on how I spray lacquer paints (both the MRP, Tamiya and the Tamiya XF/X series) where I show how I do it step by step. I basically use a small 3ml pipette and a small plastic measuring cup (an ink cup that tattoo artists use) with the thinner in a dropper bottle. For 70/30, its just 7 drops thinner, 3 drops paint. For 60/40 its 3 drops thinner, 2 drops paint or whatever amount is required. I always mix my paints outside the airbrush so I can get a precise mix and avoil spillage. Hope that helps! Cheers, Chris

What airbrush are you using, that thing looks tiny?

I think its my Harder and Steenbeck Evolution with 0.2 needle? I also use a PS770 with .18 needle
