Overview on How I Store and Inventory my Ammunition stockpile at home, using various size Metal Ammo Cans and MTM Plastic Ammo Cans, as well as an easy labeling system for keeping track of inventory.
**.50 Cal Metal Ammunition Cans: amzn.to/2DbzJdM
**.50 Cal Plastic Ammunition Cans: amzn.to/2FwAtZg
After testing numerous methods and comparing them, I generally prefer having my ammunition (live rounds/bullets) contained within some sort of sealed bag, like a ziplock or mylar bag (amzn.to/2CZBPu2), then housed within a .50 Cal GI Ammo ammo cans made of steel... But I also use the plastic ammo cans as well for certain calibers which I have little of. If you want to keep your contents dry as well, you can put a moisture absorbing Desiccant packs (amzn.to/2Dvr2bM) into the ammo can as well.
Overall its a fairly easy and safe way of storing lots of ammo long term. My stockpile consists mostly of 7.62x39 (ak-47), 7.62x54r (mosin nagant, psl-54c, vepr ak54r), .223 and 5.56 Nato (ar-15, ak101), .308 (hunting general good round to have on hand), 5.45x39 (ak-74), .22LR (numerous rifles and pistols), .380 Auto (conceal carry guns), 9mm Luger/9x19mm (full-size semi-auto pistols like Glock and ak-9mm), .45ACP (large framed pistols), 12-gauge shot shell (shotguns and ak-12), as well as various others collected along the way.
Its also good to consider a Steel Ammo Can Lock (amzn.to/2EDn7cr), for additional safety measures if necessary. Not a theft deterrent, but a good way to keep ammo secure from kids. If you are looking to store lots of ammunition, you may want to consider an actual Ammo Safe (amzn.to/2D0W6PC), which is a safer alternative to these smaller ammo cans.
In my opinion, the steel ammo can's are the way to go. Although there is practical applications for the plastic ammo cans, such as use for medical supplies, money, non-metal items (stealth), etc.

Nice storage....the only thing that I would change and also what I did is I bought a fire safe just for all of my ammo. This gives me piece of mind in the event of a fire. No one wants rounds going off during a raging fire. Other than that I like your organizational skills ....and I believe that I will follow suit as far as keeping a nice log of ammo on hand. I have a rough guesstimate ,but definitely could improve on that part. Thanks for the video and sharing your method.

I tend to do the same thing- store like ammo in single cans.. I put the inventory of contents in the box.. I am considering vacuum (light vacuum) sealing them up with a desiccant bag inside for longer term storage. Like you stated, I tend to buy ammo specifically for the range prior to going. Having a stock makes it easier to enjoy shooting what you bought for the range specifically.

Looks good. I do something similar. I use Excel Spreadsheet for my inventory list and keep all my ammo in cans in a large safe which may not be feasible for you. Large Safes are very expensive. Good job of organization.

Efficient use of storage dictates removing all the packaging and store just the rounds themselves. If you do that, I suggest placing them in the zip lock bags with ample silica gel bags to absorb moisture. As another commenter mentioned, you could build a couple "grab and go" cans that are stocked with the mags and rounds of the weapons you plan on "escaping" with if escape is necessary. The other cans can be full of "bulk rounds stored as mentioned above, which is my plan.

If it's all the same ammo, I take mine out of the boxes they were purchased in and, lay them in the ammo can loose. The ammo can will hold more rounds that way. Also, the little sylica packs that come from a new pair of shoes works great keeping out moisture....and they are free. You can also place them in the oven every six months or so to keep them dried out and put back in the ammo can.

I used to store my bullets in the original boxes inside ammo cans (new can-intact seal). However, I used one of the 40 gram desiccant packs. It was brand new when I put it in, and after about a month I reopened it to find the color had changed. In theory, that amount of desiccant is good for a much larger area, but there was moisture in the cardboard-enough to fully drain the packs of their effects. Ymmv, but just a heads up from my experience.

Hey there, First off cool video. Second I keep my ammo that I use a lot of in the tins too but i just have them in zip lock bags and I put the labels (Brand and type), batch numbers with silica gel that i got from the vitamin bottles and shoe boxs (which i went to the shoe store) on the inside of the bag and tin I use. The ammo i don't use or collect is in a tin with more silica gel.

Great video and nice setup! I'm storing similarly in the 50cal cans and I used my vinyl cutter to make letter/number decals in big, bright colored vinyl. I've found a few larger size ammo cans at my local military surplus. Considering them for 12GA and .223/5.56 due to my stock.

This is pretty much what I do too. I have all my "storage" ammo organized into labeled cans, then I have two odd-sized cans that I use just to take out shooting. I throw all my ammo for the day in one of them, and the other one to carry magazines, accessories, etc

you can put so much more ammo in the cans if you u put all the ammo in ziplok freezer bags. i like to put 100 rounds in quart freezer bags and store it that way it really consolidates the ammo and conerves overall space. my 2 pennies

I have a system kinda like yours but, for pistol cals I use Ziplock brand freezer bags. The 5x7" size holds 100rnds of 9mm or 45ACP nicely. In a small 50cal ammo can, I can fit 2000rnds of 9mm snugly and in another can, 1600rnds of 45ACP. Lemme know if you want me to post a vid.

I might add- buy smaller ammo cans or dry boxes for pistol ammo and 22LR, and larger ammo cans or dry boxes for rifle rounds. It's not obvious till you make the mistake and buy the other way- then you will realize that a can of pistol ammo is REALLY heavy whereas rifle rounds tend to be light in comparison (density).

I have it sorted on the spreadsheet by caliber, and at the bottom I have detailed how many mags I have, what they're loaded with, and lastly, what I have in the pipeline (purchased, but not yet received). 6 different calibers, 14,485 rounds total worth $3639.72 :)

good video man...the only thing i could think of to do you didnt do which it took me 10 mins..lol but if you plan on storing for long term and im not sure if you have this in your basement or up stairs is you can vacuum seal some of it to keep it safe especially if you store in the basement so that way you have a flood or sewage back up you have safe and dry ammo... just a thought .. but i like how organized you are alot of people dont want to take the time but its worth it. good job just keep doing what your doing and dont listen to the people that arent smart enough to do this their self.. now i dont agree with the assholes that buy ammo to resell it that pisses me off more then anything but if you are gonna buy it and save it or shoot it then by all means do it.. i have 1000's of rounds saved because i always buy it when i go to the store a few boxes all the time and it stacks up... now i have 20k in 22LR but that was passed down to me from my grand father that bought it durning his like i see boxes tht have $.99 per box... lol imagine that.. and ill take the old out and it shoots fine but its mostly vacuum sealed until i need it! hope that helps brother !

really based on humidity in the storage facility. high humidity - anything more than 35% humidity, you may have an issue. Consider sealing them in some sort of zip lock or seal tight bag system, along with a moisture absorbing desiccant pack with it. hope it helps and good luck!
